AA, a group of students who devote themselves to the study of opportunities in the field of teaching, is under the direction of Miss Gregory, ln addition to their worthy activities in the field of preparing themselves to become capable teachers for the generation to come, they often aid the school authorities by serving as substitutes in emergencies. Last year the F. TAA. took an active part in a nation-wide conference held at Washington University. There they studied the advantages and disadvantages of the teaching profession and were given interesting lectures on the developments of modern improved teaching techniques which has proved invaluable to the neophytes in the teaching world of K. H. S. This year the organization visited the grade schools of Kirkwood to observe teaching prac- tices first-hand. These experiences provide an outstanding background for a teaching career and clearly present the problems and possi- bilities of a profession that makes one of the greatest contributions to mankind. Here is an organization where students train themselves to carry on the noble principles of our Ameri- can heritage by instructing our children in the guarding and exaltation of democratic princi- ples. The efforts of such people have been highly instrumental in the growth of freedom and from their work they desire a personal satisfaction of helping others to help themselves in a world made extremely complicated by present economic conditions. Student Council helps to promote democratic leadership by representing the en- tire student body. This type of representative government was uppermost in the minds of the framers of the American Constitution which was to serve the generations of the future. Our forefathers depended upon an enlightened citt- zenry to carry out their plans of self-government through representatives. Likewise, each class Page Eighty four in the senior high school is empowered to select by secret ballot fifteen students who possess outstanding character and ability as their representatives. These students act as an official body in collaboration with the class officers who are also chosen by secret ballot. Here we find democracy in action by direct student representation under the understanding sponsorship of Mr. Sarff. ln a country that upholds democratic ideals the interdependence of neighhors is absolutely necessary for a progressive economic develop- ment. Accordingly, a close alignment with our Pan-American neighloors is very essential in promoting good will and confidence, which is an integral part of co-operation between the United States and our Spanish speaking friends. At K. l-l. S. the Spanish Club, under the direc- tion of Mrs. Boettner, aims to familiarize its members with the Spanish language, customs, and traditions through the use of films, re- corded music, programs in which cluh members participate, and by the aid of visiting speakers. All these activities, together with their initia- tions, dances, and Xmas Pinata, make the clul: a highlight at K. H, S. The proverb of old, teaching that beings are composed of many units which must work together to form the perfect whole, is a fitting caption for the Senior Band, whose exeniplifica- tioiis cf co-operation always spell success. Mr. Burton lsaoc carefully instils into each indi- vidual the democratic principle of forgetting self so as to add to others' enjoyment. During the football season this group worked hard, practicing marches and formations plus their musical numbers, to create a peppy atmos- phere at the games. All decked out in colorful red uniforms with white trim, the group pre- sented a loyalty-inspiring spectacle on the field. Unforgettable are the numerous times the members endured the frigid weather, as they faithfully supported their school and team. During the pep assemblies this past year the band had a vital part in arousing the enthusi- asm of the student body, thus spreading patriot- ism throughout the high school. Without a song the day would never ond, , is an excellent introductory phrase for the A Cappella Choir. Truly, the founders of our . country many times would not have been able K W S to press on, had it not been for the song of me M a 4 a faith and freedom that rang in their souls. To be a well-rounded citizen, one must be able to appreciate the finer things of life, such as good music. The A Cappella Choir, under the tal- ented direction of Miss lane Todd, has worked to increase this appreciation through the intel- ligent, intensive study of excellent choral music. Daily she strove to build in the minds of the singers standards for evaluation of singing indi- vidually and in groups. By starting the period with vocal exercises, Miss Todd has taught each member the importance of correct posture and tone placement. As the class hour pro' gressed, they worked into lovely choral ar- rangements, pleasing to both director and par- ticipants. Among the Choir's many activities we shall never forget their Christmas and Spring Concerts and their Christmas Assemblyg with their colorful selection of songs and rich harmony, they presented entertaining programs to parents and friends. Also in the spring of the year they took an active part in the All- County music festival with many members going on to participate in All-County Chorus. Truly Kirkwood High has been benefitted by this organization which has daily encouraged good citizenship among the student body. oh, Hgly Niqhj' Page One Hundred One WWW? fm 24:46:64 -faking is 'Q U.
