Best oi luck to the boys in the Country Day tournament this year. K The memories of our childhood sports are vivid in our minds today. We well remember our first baseball idols and our first football and basketball heroes. This athletic enthusi- asm has carried over into consequent member- ship in the K. H. S. K-Klub. The club, under the devoted leadership of Mrs. Coulter, en- deavors to provide an opportunity for every girl to secure recreation as a balance to the sedentary demands of school life. By sponsoring and promoting an intramural and interschool program of girls' sports, play days, sports days, and social affairse a love of sports and the ideals of good sportsmanship are fostered. 13' or ZYUQZFJUOHI This year the K-Klub gave a tea for the ninth grade girls with the idea of informing them on the one thousand point requirement for membership. The girls also sponsor a back- ward dance each year as well as the Hatchet Hop when the Hatchet Man of K. H. S. is chosen. This year new equipment was pur- ohased, making it possible for members ot K-Klub to continue the sponsorship of hockey, baseball, basketball, and volleyball intraniu- rals along with class and varsity teams. The girls of the club are to be complimented for their many hours of worl: and service done for the schools. The mosi popular of all girls' sports, hockey is a fast- rnoving game which requires energy, physical fitness, skill, and team work. This year's varsity had a good season, suffering only one defeat. S 13' 01' S 1477! After hockey comes basketball, a popular sport of the girls at K. H. S. Endurance plays a large part in this game, for the gals of the court must always be on the alert and quick to respond. True to the standards of Kirkwood teams the girls showed unmatched spirit in all their games. 13' or own' Competition is keen in the field of softball, for there are many well-qualified girls at Kirk- wood who make up A-l teams. Their sports- rnanlike attitude deserves a great deal of praise. Several exciting games were played with neighboring schools to complete a success- ful year of girls' sports at Kirkwood High School. S 15 or b'l L'C' A large number of girls signed up for volley- ball this year. After long practices the teams developed into smooth working units which displayed co-operation and quick, sure move- ments. From this good material class teams and the varsity were chosen. Under Mrs. Coul- ter's excellent supervision all the teams fin- ished the season successfully. Page Sixtyrcne L 13' or Qfgdwfzjf 'What was more stirring than catching the spirit of enthusiasm as you watched a parade high on your fathers shoulders, or seeing your trrst football or baseball game? The laughing cheering, tense crowd developed the ABC of a keen sense of loyalty and zeal. The K. H. S. pep club endeavors to promote enthusiasm and school spirit at all football and basketball games. This organization cheers the teams on ta victory wherever they may play. Our blocks of fervor build higher and higher as we ad- vance in the grades. Under the sponsorship of Mrs. Kane the Pep Club had a very original idea this ye-ar when they put on the Sak f-lop , and another first was the making of rea and white streamers to be waved at the Turkey Day game. This year is one S 115' or Slugger of the worst for early season practice that Coach Conklin has experienced in a long time and consequently no information concerning the players' positions are available as this book goes to press. However, with lettermen McClanahan, Herman, Butler, Campbell, and lones returning the outlook is promising. The remainder of the team shall be made up of ninth, tenth, and eleventh grade aspirants who are highly enthusiastic. The earliest tryouts shall eliminate a group of thirty players who shall go into immediate training for the K. H. S. varsity. Our team shall play a double round robin of fourteen games with seven other teams in the Suburban League. With a powerhouse in the making, the chance of K. H. Gur dream of enchanting Espana is soon realized when we are given the opportunity ro learn the Spanish language in junior high and, if grades permit, we are privileged to become members of the Spanish Club. This club laniiliarizes its members wiih the litera- ture, music, customs, and superstitions of our neighboring country to the south. Again this year Christmas brought a gay party and the breaking of the traditional pinata . lmrnedie aiely following came the annual colorful dance La Fiesta. Our good neighbors are going to be more informed on the ways of school life at K. H. S. when they receive a scrapbook prepared by the club to be sent to a Latin American school. Y-teens and Tri-Y clubs throughout the nation have been organized to put into practice those very stand- ards of respect for the individual and demo- cratic brotherhood among all men. Beginning with get-acguainted sessions, the K. H. S. divi- sion of this world-wide organization takes part in both fun and service projects, among which are hikes, parties, field trips, square dances, and participation in county jamborees and regional association banquets, under the untir- ing direction of Miss Garrison. Money is raised for the lflforld Fellowship and all possible help is extended to Tri-Y clubs in foreign lands. ln the first group organization to which you belonged in your primer days, there were in- stilled within you the fundamentals of cooper- ation and group responsibility, and these funda' mentals become basic factors in the function- ing of any Y-teen or Tri-Y club. From associa- tions such as these we learn the ABC's of a rich and useful life, and we learn to strive together to bring about world peace. Lectures and proiects encourage the student to attain a better mas- tery ot language, to develop poise and selt' control, and to appreciate dramatic literature and its techniques. For the first time in many years the tall production was a mystery play, a oneeact production was presented to the P. T. Addis n. lf we say that our instrumentalists learn the ABC's of music in junior high music groups we might say that in senior high they learn the XYZ's of high school orchestration. Under the direction of lvlr. Burton lsaac our senior orches- tra has done much in the past year to enrich our musical life at K. H. S. Appropriate theme music was rehearsed and presented between acts of Little Theaters fall play: the orchestra A ik or Aicfzkffy took part in P. T. A. entertainments, the all- county festival this spring, and our own spring concert. Who could ever forget the arrange- ment of Handel's Hallelujah Chorus, which the string section presented with the A Cappella Choir at Christmas? Service to both the stu- dent body and the community is the purpose the orchestra ascribes to itself, and the partici- pants strive to fulfill this accomplishment during the school year. Furthermore, the orchestra concerns itself with the developing among the members of the entire student body an appre- ciation for music at its best.
