But gradu- ally differences were settled and the gold state cecanie highly cosmopolitan. Today the Span- ish Club still serves as a close link between the K. H. The interesting programs presented each Vfednesday afternoon familiarize the students with the literature, music, custcrns and super- stitioris of our neighbors to the South. President Ellie Brodericlds home was the scene of the initiation of forty-eight new rnenzb hers. Together they gave their colorful dance, La Fiesta, with a floor shcw, A Parody on Columbus. Yet there was time for frontier fun which relieved the burdens of 719. This spirit is reflected in the many activities of the Tri-Y-Teens as they try to fulfill their aim of growing in friendliness and toleration of all races, religions, and nationalities, and thus grow in the knowledge and love of God. ln l949, under the capable sponsorship of Miss Garrison, the club held an inspirational ll the hands of comrades claspingn TRI-Y TEE S candlelight program in recognition of new members, participated in a World Fellowship Program and Vesper with the Y. W. C. A. and Y. M. C. A., Hi-Y, and Y-teens ai Washington University, held a fashion show, gave a mother and daughter tea, attended officers' training at Camp Montebello, enioyed a twoeweelc stay at Camp Derricotte, and engaged in a number of youth conferences, besides enioying a multi- tude of social functions. THE 0RCl-IESTRA In 1849 the camp meetings listened to the strings of the old brown fiddle as the rollicking lilt of Turkey in the Straw turned to The Virginia Reel . Today our outstanding orches- tra, under the direction of Mr. Burton Isaac, presents quite a contrast. They faithfully strive to further music appreciation in the community as well as in the school and orchestra. This is accomplished by performances in school assemblies, plays, commencement ex- ercises, and Christmas and Spring Concerts. The orchestra gives excellent experience in playing lighter music as well as the classics. The annual County Music Festival, held in the spring, is very inspirational for the members have an opportunity to display their talents as well as hear other students perform. The more advanced members also have the honor ct participating in the All-County Orchestra. Today our band at K. H. S. strikes up under the direction of Mr. Burton Isaac who enthusiastically molds about sixty student musicians into a harmonious band that is truly a credit to our school. Beck. Drums: Dclson, Davis, Swank, Bond, Ragan, The band got off to a rousing start as they appeared in their attractive red uniforms at the home football games, The marching came to an ultra climax on Thanksgiving Day when they paraded through Kirkwood and then dem- onstrated new formations at the traditional Pioneer-Statesmen Football game. It was a gala performance and we will long remember Hail, Kirkwood l-ligh School and the stirring strains of Buckle Down, Oh, Kirkwood. Ad- ditional days of rehearsals found their reward in such rich strikes as two annual concerts, the P. T. A. program, the County Music Pesti- val, as well as the many school assemblies.
