Foolecl f7YCe Chills and fever and drenching sweat, Focal infection is the safest bet. A chill, then fever, with pain in the side, Difficult breathing and pupils wide. Rales and herpes and rapid heart, Lobar pneumonia has got a start. Thus I could ramble the whole list thru, And name all the symptoms Sir Osler knew. With all of my knowledge to guide me and rule me None of these cases could ever fool me. All this I was thinking while strolling one day, When outof a house dashed a man old and gray, And wringing his hands in a manner quite wild, He cried- Oh, Doctor, come save my child! Then I straightened my spine and I threw out my chest, CFor it flattered my pride to be thusly addressedj And I said, My dear man, I can give no prognosis Until I have made a correct diagnosis. So if you will lead me to where your son lies, I will tell you what's wrong. CGee, it's nice to be wisej There on the bed lay a youth about twenty, Writhing and moaning and groaning a plenty. Crying and coughing and gasping for breath, Surely, thought I, He is nigh unto death. Then banking quite strong on my great store of knowledge CWhich I recently gained in an Osteopath Collegej I started to question him word by word, He had all the symptoms of which I had heard. A None of the methods which I could employ Could give me a clue as to what ailed the boy. So after I'd finished my examination, I wisely pronounced it a bad complication. And assuming a look which I meant to be sinister I told the old man to go bring in the minister. Now who would have thought that when I turned my back, He would call an old doctor who lived down the track? The next day while making my usual round, My thoughts were disturbed by a musical sound, And whistling merrily on his way Was the lad I had seen on the previous day. What illusion is this that's affecting my head? Surely I knew that the boy should be dead, So I turned me around and I hastened me back, And I sought the old doctor who lived down the track. At last when I found the befwhiskered old duffer Said I, What disease did that young scoundrel suffer? Ahem, said the Doctor with a manner mysterious, That boy wasn't sick-he was simply hysteriousf' Page 233
