Graduation classes have departed leaving marks of tradition that succeeding classes have followed. Year-by-year and step-by-step the Spirit of Kirkman Vocational High School has been developed by an understanding administration and faculty and an eager student body wdrking together. At the end of twenty-five years one can look back over years of accom- plishment and forward to years of great promise- This year's graduating class stands proudly at the end of the first twenty-five years of our school's history and bravely and hopefully welcomes the next quarter-century, placing all trust in the future classes to preserve the spirit that has made Kirkman Vocational the school that it is. In this volume,-'the fifth publication of the Spirit, the staff attempted to preserve in permanent form a chapter in Kirkman's history . . . . the footprints we are leaving behind us in 1954-. -2... is i-..f-polrsanf-gjl I 1 1 I 1 MR. OTIS C. KIRKMAN Since this year is being observed as the twenty-fifth anniversary of the founding of our Alma Mater, it is fitting and proper that. we look backward as well as forward, for it is said that every institution is the shadow of one person. Most assuredly this statement is true at Kirkman because all evidence indicates that the present vocational program is the shadow of the late Otis C. Kirkman, founder of the first public vocational school organized in Chattanooga. It was he who had the vision, the courage, the energy, and the determination necessary to organize the first classes. He planted the seed of vocational education in this communityg nurtured his project through its infancyg and lived to see his dream fulfilled, at least in part.. While no member of the Class of 1954 has first-hand information, all have heard of the many problems he encountered and the reverses which he met. Many men would have given up in despair, but Mr. Kirkman believed most sincerely 1n what was then a new and different concept of education, and he worked diligently and faithfully to get his ideas accepted. ' Because of all that he did to promote vocational education in Chattanooga, in the South, and in the Nation, the Senior Class respectfully dedicates The Spirit of 1954- post-humously to the memory of Otis C. Kirkman, the Father of Vocational Educa- tion in Chattanooga, a. man of vision, a pioneer educator, and af man of high ideals and unquestionable integrity .... -3. l' P' 4 7a 'adam The noble acts which he did, and his greatness, they are not written: for they were very many. The A pocrypha I Maccabees IX, 22 At the passing of any one who -is near and dear to us there comes a feel- ing of shock and sadness, but the feeling is especially strong when our leader and friend has gone from us. The loss of a man of Mr. Huffaker's stature will be long felt by those who are now or have been at Kirkman. He was an educational leader without peer in our state. Long hours of competent work and devotion to duty built in the lives of his associates and co-workers a monument to the memory of Mr. Huffaker beyond the power of mere words to describe. Loyalty to his associates and friends was a most admirable characteristic. An humble and sincere disposi- tion made him the friend and helper of all who knew him. Even when his duties and cares weighed the heaviest upon him, he found time to help those -in need of his aid. Mr. Kirkman and Mr. Huffaker were the two men most instrumental in realizing the hopes and dreams of vocational education in our community. Mr. Huffaker's plans for a school plant, sufficient to meet the need of Kirk- man Vocational High School, were nearing a point of fulfillment at the time he was taken from us. His efforts to reach this aspiration will be re- membered as the ma-in force responsible for its achievement, even though he was 11ot privileged to see its completion. The accomplishments of this respected man will long be remembered and appreciated. -41 Q w Q! MR. FRANK HUFFAKER 192 to 1953 400 CHESTNUT STREET BUILDING In this building, located at 400 Chestnut Street, the Chattanooga Vocational School opened in October, 1928. Theq late O. C. Kirkman, then a teacher ali Chattanooga was relieved of one-half of his teaching duties so that he mighty serve as the school's principal. It was largely due to Mr. Kirkman's persistent and untiring efforts that Superintendent W. T. Robinson and Commissioner H. D. Huffaker reacted favor- ably toward the opening of a vocational school in Chattanooga. During the first year the school enrolled 70 students and a staff of 3 teachers, a secretary and Mr. Kirk- man. By the end of the third year the enrollment had grown to the fpoint that the space in this 12 room building was inadequate. A 3-story garage building in the rear of the school and facing on Broad Street was leased to provide extra shop and classroom space. In 1937 the garage was vacated when shops were moved into a newly con- structed building at 215 Chestnut Street, now the site of Kirkman's main building lshown on the end sheets of this bookl. The need for additional classroom space became so great that the present ma-in building was erected at 215 Chestnut Street and was occupied in 1939. The 4100 Chestnut Street building continued to be used as a pre-vocational school for seventh and eighth grade students until 1945 when the junior high, division was moved into lhe Pa-rk Place School on East Ninth Street. It remained there until its closing. Following the death of Mr. Kirkman, July 13, 1943, the name of the school was changed to Kirkman Vocational High School in honor of its founder. Mr. Frank Huf- linker was appointed to succeed Nlr. Kirkman as principal of tha high school and to serve as Director of Vocational Education in the Chattanooga Public Schools. In 194-9 lVlr. Robert A. Taylor was appointed as principal of the high school. Mr. Huffaker became full-time director and continued in that capacity until his death, March 3, 1954. 6 .- The National Defense Training, later known as War Production Training Program, was started in 19440 to train men and women for war-time jobs in industry. For 5 years the training was offered at the Vocational School, 24 hours per day, seven days per week for most of the time. A total of 8,399 men and women were trained under the plan before it closed in May, 1945. ln 194-5 returning war veterans increased Kirkrna.n's enrollment so that additional space for high school and veteran shops was necessary. The 4100 Chestnut Street building, vacated by the junior high division, was utilized and became the center of the Veteran Training Program.. From November 1, 1945, until February 28,1953, the school trained 3,340 veterans of World War ll. SHOP BUILDING During the school year 1949-1950, the Board of Education acquired property belonging to the Stein Construction Company and located north of the main build- ing. An unfinished warehouse located on this property was remodeled and finished to house a part of tihe vocationl shops. lt was occupied in the falliof 1950. STEIN BUILDING The Stein Building, located on the corner of Second and Chestnut Streets has been used since it was acquired for office space and classrooms. Today the school occupies the 400 Chestnut Street Building for Adult Training classes and high school shops gthe main building for offices, classrooms and shopsg the Stein Buildingfor offices and classroomsg and the Shop Building, Throughout its history the Kirkman Vocational School has had as its purpose the establishment of an educational program to serve the youth and adults of this com- munity with a type of training designed to fit their individual needs. In 25 years the school has grown from a beginning class of 70 to the point of training several thousand adults and over 700 high school students per year. -7- 1 t Kirkman Celebrates Mr. Robert Taylor, Principal of Kirkman, welcomes guests to Open House and the 25th Anniversary Celebration for Kirkman. CLASS HISTORY When one sits down to write the history of a class, a shadow seems to pass over the brightest face. However, there are many pleasant memories to be recalled in a history, and it is these memories that we hope to record as our permanent record in the school. September 5, 1950, found a group of 117 Freshmen awaiting the opening of the doors at Kirkman Vocational High School. During the school year each made new friends that were to last throughout the high school experience. Sponsors for the class that year were Mr. Robinson and Mr. Cardwell. Officers elected were Peggy Ford, President, Bill Ashburn, Vice-President, James Chapman, Secretaryg and Joyce Case, Treasurer. As the end of year drew near, t'1e Freshman class had a wonderful picnic which was held at Lake Winnepesauka. In May, 1951, each one bade his friends good-by until the class assembled the next September. The following year, September 3, 1951, the class organized as Sophomores, and its number was increased considerably by new students from the various junior high schools. Early in the school year we elected for our sponsors Mrs. Mary Houghton and Mr. Charles Craig. Class officers elected were Eugene Morgan, President: Kenneth Wilson, Vice-President, Helen Harden, Secretary: and Russell Carlisle, Treasurer. At the end of the year we held our annual picnic at Lake Winnepesauka. The last of May we bade each one farewell and wished each an enjoyable vacation. September 5, 1952, watched a proud and rather anxious' group of Juniors as they returned after vacation, eager for a year of memorable activities. Sponsors for our Junior year were Miss Katherine Bennett, Mrs. Edith Apperson, and Mr. W. E. Sharrock. Class officers for the year were Bill Hicks, Presidentg Jimmy Peery, Vice- Presidentg Shirley Watkins, Secretary, and Louise Lumpkins, Treasurer. Big events of the year were the Kirkman Mixer and the Valentine Party. The highlights of the year were the 14th Annual Junior-Senior Banquet, which was held at the Industrial YMCA, and the prom which followed in the school cafeteria. We will also remember the happy time we had at the Junior picnic, which was held at Lake Winnepesauka. As final exams rolled around and final grades were given, each went on his way for the next three months. The warm, sunshiny morning of September 4, 1953, found a group of Seniors ready to starttheir last eventful year of school. Late in September the class organized and elected as their Sponsor, Mrs. Willie Blanche Looney, Co-Sponsor, Miss Charlotte Roessleing and Shop Sponsor, Mr. Joe Frazier. Class officers for the year were Jimmy Richey, Presidentg Sonny Crane, Vice-Presidentg Wilma McDowell, Secretary: Evange- line Crowe, Treasurer. The class voted to sell Christmas cards to raise money for the treasury. On November 20, the Senior Carnival was held. The Senior Class voted to publish the Spirit of 1954 as a cla s project. Those who worked the long hours will remember the work and fun for a life time. On April 23, Senior Day was held. Everyone was dressed in different costumes. At noon, that day, luncheon was held, and everyone came back that night for the Senior Tacky Party. Senior orals came and went. At the end of May the class presented its gift to the school and crowned Mr. and Miss Kirkman in Class Day Exercises. The next Sunday Baccalaureate Service was held, followed by a reception for the parents and friends of the Seniors. Commencement Exercise, which is the most sorrowful and yet the most joyful event for the Seniors, was held at Dickinson Jr. High School. For the last time the members gathered to receive their diplomas, and thus perform their last official act as the class of 1954. The following day classmates gathered for the Senior Class trip and their last clay of fun together. ass Motto: Fame is Vapor. Popularity is accident. Riches take ming and fly away. The only thing that endures is character Class Colors: Y.,11.,w and white 127i Class Flower: Yellow Rose CLASS PROPHECY Here it is, June 2nd, 1979, 25 years after my graduation from high school. As I get ready to at- tend the graduation for my twins, my mind wanders and I see again the happy faces of the Class of '54 as we received the coveted diploma. Looking backward I recall the wishes of my classmates and suddenly realize that those wishes have come true. There's my friend, Charlotte Haggard who wanted to be a famous hair stylist, and she is. In New York she owns her shop and is known the world over for her creation. Russell Carlisle is head machinist at Brooklyn Navy Yards and works for Johnny Denton, 3 mulwmllllonalre' Evah Blevins, voted the most beautiful secretary in the U. S., is Johnny's private secretary- Over at the Joyce Jones Children's Hospital Shirley Watkins is head nurse and Louise Downer and Betty Brown have charge of the baby ward. John Eaves, interior decorator, just finished with a new color scheme on the wall that's guaranteed to put the children to sleep quickly. J. W. France owns France's Super-heaters, Incorporated, and hires Earlene SiHEl0f0H and Caro- lyn Milliken as bookkeepers to keep up with the fabulous profits he makes. Behind the Iron Curtain are the senior twins, Doris and Chester Wallace. They are doing a grand job as missionaries. For some time Bill Hicks and Wilma McDowell have been married and at present are on a world tour. If they can get behind the Iron Curtain they intend to see Doris and Chester. Recently I saw Bobbie McCollum and Helen Harden. They were driving the latest model Jar- guaris, which made me remember that they left for Texas just after graduation and from all appear- ances married those milionaires they wished for. Bobby Case is teaching Drafting at our Alma Materg and Eugene Horton, a West Point gradu- ate, is a five star general in the U. S. Army in Alaska. Beryl Meadows was always a lover of speed: so he opened the B. and M. Speedway. The very first entry was Dan Thomas who had a little trouble at the end of the second heat, and who should rush out on the track but Dan's super ace mechanics: Fred Pettit and Johnny Lusk. . Jean Whitmire has made quite a name for herself with the A. E. C. I recall James Perry's wish to be a doctor of geology. After graduating from Harvard he be- came a roving reported for National Geographic Magazine and has made numerous important surveys on how long the Rocky Mountains will remain standing. William Gennoe always wanted to be President of the United States but didn't quite make it. He did get to the White House though. He's the very distinguished looking gentleman who opens the front door when guests arrive. Of course, William would be lonesome without his old friend to keep him company in Washington. When Senator Kefauver retired, his place was filled by a young and brilliant Boy Senator from Tennessee-Raymond Goodner. Recently when traveling in Florida with my family we stopped for the night at a motor court- one of these ultra modern affairs. Its owner is Jackie Garner, somewhat changed and a bit over- weight, but the same old Jackie still. Evangeline Crowe, excellent history student, now presides over room 35 at K. V. H. S. and teaches history to frightened seniors. Jimmy Richey has reached his goal of farming on Sand Mountain and raising peanuts, syrup cane, and taters . The last I heard he was so prosperous he had to hire two secretaries, Monna Sue Penney and Bettye Akins. Like myself, some of our girls became homemakers. There are Jo Cordell, who has three chil- dren: Nellie Hawkinsg Arbedella Carlisleg Pat Travisg and Mary Morgan, who has two of the cutest little girls one ever saw. -28-. Ben Pettitt ha a cattle ranch on the plains of Texas and is making a fortune furnishing bulls for the fights in Old Mexico. How surprised I was not long ago when I took my boys into the A and B Barber Shop. There was my old friend Alvin Blevins specializing in cutting hair to suit a man's personality. As I waited for the boys I decided to get a manicure. The manicurist was Janice Boston, now Mrs. Arthur Howard. Arthur stays home and cares for the three children while Janice works. Johnny Crump and Joe Devlin are traveling salesmen for the James Doyle Bucket Co. Last I heard of Walter McCommon he was going strong on that navy career as commander of the U. S. S. Tennessee. Harold Rochester always enjoyed strange adventures. Right now he's head instructor for the frogmen at the frogmen training grounds' on Chickamauga Lake. Ray Smith owns a boat dock and sporting goods store near-by. It's called Smith's Paradise. Gene Morgan, the unpredictable! Right now he owns Morgan Center in New York. It was formerlly Rockafellow Center and Gene won it on a bet. Thomas Davis has the biggest home and the biggest family in town. I should knowg they live next door. And what a racket! It goes on all the time. Rosa Hicks is the capable nurse who takes care of the Davises' numerous children. We're all healthy in Chattanooga these days for Sonny Crane is Sanitation Engineer for the City and his able assistant is Jimmy Taylor. Not long ago Allen Phillips was caught using his Print Shop to print S100 bills. I don't know where he is now. Not long ago Ann Buffington made a real name for herself in the Courts of Tennessee. She al- ways was a good talker and she talked Johnny Crump right out of trouble over something he was caught doing on Daisy Mountain. Our class had a host of good secretaries in it. Mary Jo Sliger is with a big bank in Chicagog Elizabeth Quarles is private secretary to the president of DuPont Companyg Margaret Mackey and Peggie Dodson are public school secretariesg and Shirley Elrod works for Quaker Oats Company. Ronald Sleepy Welter is testing mattresses at the Everlasting Mattress Co. owned by Charles Chambers. Mary Venable is still chasing a rich old bachelor who owns a mansion on the hill top. Don Riley has long since given up the search for a wealthy widow, and gossips are beginning to link his and Mary's name in society columns. . Joyce Stubhlefield and Marilyn Waldrip have traveled around the world several times. The last trlp was made in a jet propelled flying saucer. Lee Ewton and Edward O'Leary are in business together and have a rather successful Radio and T. V. Shop. Their head of sales is Rose Marie Poole. William Green just recently opened another store ln a chain known as Green's Soft Shoe Stores. They specialize in shoes for men with big feet. l CAFMX1 Legg and Kay McCrary are working in the biggest bank in town. Kay is a teller 3 Alston is a . . . Louise Lumpkins is teaching school somewhere, and I heard the subject was history, of all things! Manley Meadows is postmaster in Chattanooga. Jimmy Swanson is in Atlanta working as master of ceremonies on several T. V. shows. Of course, he's married. Hollis Harris has a print shop and Norma Jean Clowers is his wife and adviser on all business matter. V Right now Earl Clowers is holding a revival in a little community in the hills of North Carolina. He's doing some good work, I hear. Betty Elliott married some fellow from New York and is now living on easy street. Come to think of it her husband is a partner of Barney Padgett, an electrical engineer. If you ever need an A-1 electrician just call Jerry Smartt. He'll come at all hours and he really knows his work. . Ruby Green -is still evening school secretary and Ruby Jo McCanless is running a florist shop with Jo Turner. My--but the time's gone in a hurry, and I'd better rush or I'll be late to see my sons graduate from my Alma Mater. Ann Kosky ...29..
