C 00 I5 Of' The vocat1onal school was established 1n the fall of 1928 through the efforts of the late O C Krrkman W1th a staff of three teachers the school began operatron tn a burldrng at 400 Chestnut Street Seventy puprls were enrolled durmg the frrst year In 1936 a new shop burldmg was erected at 215 Chestnut Street to house a part of the vocational y sc oo move mto xts present locatron The orrglnal vocatronal school btuldrng contrnued to be used as d1e Junior branch of the school untrl 1945 when rt was moved to the Park Place School Th b h fth 1S ranc 0 e school was closed temporarily ln May 1950 In July 1940 the Natronal Defense Tralmng program began conductrng day and night classes to prepare workers for war production Jobs More than 8 300 men and women were enrolled during the frve year perxod November 1945 marked the begrnrung of the separate Veteran Trarnlng Program An enroll ment of 1 985 veterans of World War II has been recorded smce thls date For years the building space at Krrkman has been far too madequate to take care of all stu dents who wrshed to attend the school Condltrons have been crowded for those who dxd attend and fac litres have been limited lnsprte of the drsadvantage the school contmued to grow and at present has a hrgh school enrollment of 5 and a staff of 39 Durlng dre school year of 1949 50 the Stern Constructron Buildings were acqurred for addmonal classroom and shop space Some shops were moved mto the new burldrng ln the fall of 1950 At the present plans are belng furthered to burld additional classroom space and a new cafeterxa 4 S . fi shops. CLASS COLORS Blue and White CLASS FLOWER American Beauty Rose C4144 sjwgafory When the time comes to sit down and write the history of a class a shadow seems to cover the brightest faces One is sorry to think of the life of a class being over However there are many pleasant record at the school September 4 1947 found a group of 93 enthusiastic eager Freshmen awaiting the opening of the doors at Kukman Vocational High School As the year progressed and upper classmen organized and elected sponsors the Freshmen watched in envy Parties and class activities were not for them as much as they wanted theml 69 l memories to be recalled in a historyg and it is these memories that we hope to record as our permanent The following year September 3 1948 the class organized as Sophomores and its number was increased considerably by new students from the junror high schools Mrs Brownsey was elected class sponsor and class offrcers were Bobby Bradford presrdent Ralph white vxce president Barbara Pittman secretary and John Jenkins treasurer Activities included a skatrng party grven at Southland Roller Rink a V rlentrne Party at school and a prcnic at Lake Wrnnepesaukah September of 1949 watched a proud and rather anxious group of Juniors asthey returned after vacation eager for a year of memorable activrtres Miss Katharine Bennett and Mrs Edrth Apperson were elected sponsor and co sponsor Officers were Betty Burns president Betty Earls vice president Opal Hill secretary and Ralph Whrte treasurer Brg events of the year were a Merry Hearts Party a bang up skatrng party and a class picnic These were small compared with the Junror Senior Banquet planned around the theme of the land of wooden shoes windmills and tulips Before anyone really realized it the class assembled again on September 5 1950 a class of 79 drgnrfred Seniors Since it was our last year we determined to make it the most successful of all To for the year were Bobby Baker presrdent James Alexander vice president Opal Hrll secretary and Harold Jennings treasurer The Senror Carnival went off with a bang as the frrst Senior event The sale of Christmas Cards kept everybody busy and helped finance our class trrp The class enjoyed a get together Chrrstmas party and bought toys for under privileged children No senior who worked on the annual staff wrll ever forget the problems the drscouragements the fellowship the fun or the satisfaction derrved from a Job well done March 30 the Seniors entertained their parents and the faculty at the traditional Senior Open House and Tea On April 6 each Senior got to give vent to his vivid imagination and dress himself up accordingly for that was Senior Day and we enyoyed a lovely luncheon and a day of fun and garety On Aprrl 20 we were entertarned by the Juniors who honored us with the Junior Semor Banquet The banquet was planned on a Collegiate theme and was followed by a Moonlrght Prom Senior exams soon followed Caps and gowns began to arrive and our year raprdly drew to a close May 24 we crowned our royalty and offrcrally bade the school and frrends adieu in the Class Day exer crses Sunday May 27 Seniors gathered to hear the Baccalaureate Sermon preached May 29 the covet ed drplomas were awarded to the graduates at the Dickinson Junior H1 School Audrtorrum The morning of May 30 found sleepy Semors gathering for the Sentor Trip and thus was performed the last official act of the Class of 1951 70 1 , ' 2 ' , ' - ' : ' , help us with our activities we elected Miss Wheeler, sponsor, and Miss Roesslein, co-sponsor.
