Qfeetozg The vocatxonal school was establxshed 1n the fall of 1928 through the efforts of the late O C Klrkman With a staff of three teachers the school began operatlon at the old 400 Chestnut Street bu1ld1ng Seventy puplls were enrolled durlng the first year In 1931 a large bu1ld1ng to the rear of the school facmg on Broad Street was rented to accommodate the mcreasmg enrollment In 1936 a new shop bu1ld1ng was erected at 215 Chestnut Street to house a part of the vocatlonal shops Two years later the mam bu1ld1ng was ready for occupancy The rented bu1ld1ng was gxven up and the hugh school was moved mto 1tS present locatlon The orngmal vocatnonal school bu1ld1ng continued to be used as the junior branch of the school untxl 1945 when If was moved to the Park Place School In july 1940 the N atronal Defense Trammg program Clater termed the War Productlon Trammg Program! began Classes were conducted day and mght to prepare workers for war poductlon jobs More than 8 300 men and women were enrolled durmg the five year perxod November 1945 marked the begmn1ng of the separate Veteran Trammg Program An enrollment of 1 985 veterans of World War II has been recorded smce th1s date The growth of the h1gh school phase of the vocatxonal program has steadlly mcreased throughout the years From the small begmnlng m 1928 the h1gh school staff has mcreased to 32 and the enrollment numbers 521 students 0 . . . . 9 , .
