Contestants Top Row, left to right: Gladys Klinger, geom' etryg David Williams, geometryg Bob Price, Latin 13 J I1 c k Gray, Latin 1, Second R o w': Shirley Everman M a r garet Kelley M o n a More land These students repre sented K 1 r k11 n High School in the district contests that were held at Kokomo Indiana on M a rch 29 1952 The Latin and Engllsh con testants were under the direction of Mrs Brum baugh and the mathe matics students under the direction of M Mvers Semor' Class Tr1p There was quite a scene of activity in front of old K H S on Thursday morning of Apr1l 17 Cars were arriving at 5 30 Seniors were tagging their luggage and exchanging greetings Soon Mr Gerald Myers of Frankfort better known as Curly arrived He was in charge of the tour It wasnt long before a big bus turned the corner and swung around in the parking lot From the windows peered the inquisitive faces of Seniors from Burlington High School They were to be our companions for the four day Journey Soon Mr Hawkins our driver better known to us as Bill had the luggage safely stored away and we were rcady to roll It was about 6 o clock We went along Road 31 after leaving Indlunapolls crossing the Ohio River over to Louisville and on dow 1 to Bardstown by noon time We had had two rest stops In Bardstown we visited the famous homestead where Stephen C Foster wrote My Old Kentucky Home Also we visited the old Talbott Inn and a famous Cathedral and other places of lnterest After having lunch we drove on to the shrine of Lincoln s birthplace cast of Hodgensville Upon arriving at Mammoth Cave we had time to freshen up a bit before the cave trip at five oclock We were pretty hungrv after the hour and a half trip of walking and climbing the stairs and inclines through the Caverns of the cave Upon returning to the hotel we were ushered into the dining room where we did yustice to an excellent meal Afterwards we were told we made quite a pretty picture there in the center of the dining room grouped together as a class and all prettied up for the OCCHSIOH We spent the evening get ting better acquainted with the group from Burlington and some of the other guests It was even hinted that romance might have developed had there been a little more time for one or two Friday we yourneyed eastward v1s1t1ng the old pioneer stockade and museum at Harrordsburg After lunch we rolled over the hills down to the blue grass country around Lexlngton After a visit to the Calumet Rac mg Farm we stopped a while to see the new gym of Kentucky Umversity It was beautiful Out east of Lex mgton we saw The Life Size Bronze Statue of Man of War and his grave Also we weie privileged to see War Admiral in person Our next stop was the Hotel Sheraton Glbson arriving about six o clock We had the evening free to choose our own entertainment At n1ne o clock Saturday morning we were escorted out to a trip through Rockwood Pottery and then to Krohns Flower Consery atory and back to a trip through WLW After lunch we went to the top of Carew Tow er where from the forty eighth story we had an excellent view of greater Cincinnati The group was free for the rest of the day Some of the boys went swimming at the Y while others shopped took in movles and a few tried to catch up on some sleep Saturday night was free time again and eyen extended to the wee hours of the morning in some rooms where sleep seemed to be a thing of the past The first tr1p Sunday morning was out to the zoo An elephant created quite a bit of xcltement when he showered the group A trip to the Union Station was followed by a return VlSll to WLW After lunch we checked out headed for home arrlylng about 5 30 oclock Another eyent in the history of the Class of 52 was completed 'ylr and Mrs Wann and Mr Rowe Myers were our chaperones 57 v V . v s 1 , .
