Coach; P Marcy, S. Shanks. L. Schmstock, M Scheve FRONT: K Kurth. Not Pictured: 0. McGmnes It was a rebuilding year for the KHS Debate team. Along with the acquisition of a new coach, there was only one debater (Kim Kurth) returning from last year that went to State. Two other debaters (Shane Shanks, Peggy Marcy) returned with experience from last year. Three novices (Lezlie Schinstock, Marty Scheve, Darryl McGmnes) joined the Debate effort. Lezlie debated in the experienced class to complete that two-man team. The season began at Chaparral with only one experienced team participating. At Lakin, Kim and Shane received the first trophy of their season, third place, and they received a second place trophy at Hoxie. The experienced also competed in two other Debate tournaments before the Regional Tournament. The Regionals were held at Bethel College where the year of rebuilding was capped off by finishing fourth. The novices had a tough year since they only debated in three tournaments with novice divisions. They gained valuable experience because of this. Debate is an activity that requires a lot of time and work. However, it also provides a lot of fun and excitement. Next year the debating topic will deal with minimal educational standards for schools. The staff throughout the year departed from the more traditional layout form of the publication of the two previous years by using more the modular approach with a front-page floating flag. Expanded student editorials on the opinion page considered such issues as the open noon hour, the pre marital counseling sessions with Dr. Tim Theis, and the hunting regulations. Issues X and XII contained in-depth studies, one on the work-study curriculum program and the other on the meaning of the term success.” The KHS Breezes gained statewide recognition by receiving for the second consecutive year the coveted certificate of excellence award from the Kansas Association of School boards int he school district newsletter category. Five students participated in the February regional contest of the Kansas Scholastic Press Association at Hays: Janet VanNahmen, Jeanne Hogan, Steve Frantum, Marty Scheve and Peggy Sparke. Jeanne Hogan received second place in the headline writing category for students from 3-2-1A schools, qualifying her for state competition in March. Co-editors for the year were Barry Gales and Jeanne Hogan; LeRoy Stegman served as the business and the circulation manager. The Lewis Press Inc., Lewis, Kansas printed the paper. Approximately 600 copies of the 12 issues were circulated among the students, staff, parents, supporters and advertisers of the local school district.
