Planning began before school started with a faculty luncheon. Besides a goal of promoting school unity and pride, STUCO had a financial goal. Projects for the first semester included selling carnations for homecoming, a community clean-up day, selling candles and ice scrapers through the holidays. The money earned in these activities was used to pay for lyceums, refreshments for dances, the purchasing of a sound system and other STUCO sponsored activities. The second semester began fresh with the old projects completed and new ones planned. With the ping pong facilities available to the student body, STUCO planned a ping pong championship. Sarah Mo liter became ping pong champion for 1977. Elections for 1977-78 STUCO offices were held. Eddie Rathbuxn was elected President; Brenda Stanton, Vice-President; Kathleen Har-nish, Secretary and Betty Schuette, Treasurer. Playday was held for the entire student body and faculty. Games such as softball, volleyball, and an obstacle course were held. 1. Audrey voting for STUCO officers. 2. Disk jockey Rush. 3. Sock hop dancers. 4. Indoor Olympics. 5. Along with all of the main projects, STUCO helped with changing bulletin boards, setting up ticket takers for games, choosing lunch menus, assisting with school pictures, eye and ear tests and many odd jobs which are important to the smooth functioning of a school. Kayettes Kayettes had a very active year and many new activities were introduced. Among these was Kayette Hush Day. Hush Day was a day where the girls could not talk to the guys and if they did they had to give a button to the guy they did talk to. The guys were suppose to get the girls to talk and at the end of the day the guy with the most buttons was declared Mr. Irresistible. Virgil Countryman won and was awarded a kiss from Kayette President, Martha Herrmann. Miss Blabbermouth was Jayme Brown and several girls were recognized as having kept all of their buttons. The Kayettes caroled in the hallways of the school and around town at Christmas time. Before Christmas vacation secret locker pals were drawn and a party was held a week later where gifts were exchanged. An Egg Drive for The Association for Retarded Citizens was held during January. The members of the club were divided into groups according to which committee they belonged to and assigned certain sections of the town. At every other house they asked for an egg and then sold them at the houses in between. A Slave Day and the Parent-Daughter Banquet were also highlights of the 76-77 school year for the Kayettes. 1. Virgil wins the prize for Mr. Irresistable. 2. Kayette cabinet entertain new members. 3. Freshmen girls at Kayette initiation . 4. Kayettes carol KHS hallways. 5. GAA members also purchased letter jackets and contributed time in order to raise money for the Universal Weight Machine. Sports are what makes up K-Lettermen. To be a member one must participate in a sport sometime throughout the school year, and the person need not have lettered in a sport to belong. The Lettermen started their active organization off by sponsoring a soup supper. They were able to install an 8-track stereo system in Big Bertha for everyone's enjoyment. Money was raised at other times to help pay for the scoreboard clock and the Universal Weight Machine. New letter jackets were purchased by new and old members. To close out their yearly activities, the Lettermen sponsored a steak feed. First Row: Mr. Ice, Sponsor; J. Heit, C. Rush, B. Inman, A. Burcher, B. Sparke, B. Mathes, J. Habiger, L. Schmitt, P. Pep Chib was busy throughout the school year with poster parties, secret athletic locker pals, and moneymaking projects which included a Sarah Coventry Jewelry Party besides supporting the Coyotes. Pep Club's biggest project was Homecoming which they were in full charge of. Homecoming activities included a morning assembly, afternoon parade, halftime ceremonies, and dance. Homecoming theme was You Are the Sunshine of My Life. Another project started this year was Parent Night Buffet Supper which took the place of Parents' Night ceremonies held during a designated game. This was held for both football players and their parents, and also for the Mid-Winter athletes and their parents. All coaches, managers, and faculty that helped with that particular sport were also honored. Pep Club was run by a point system this year. Members were given points for attending games, poster parties, meetings, and other projects. Points were tabulated at the end of the year and letters were presented at Awards Night. We're Going To Howl Tonight was the motto of a new organization formed at KHS. The Coyote's Den, with approximately 50 members, was an all male pep club. Formed at the start of second semester and under the sponsorship of Randy Sawyer and Allen Tiller, the members of the Coyote's Den attended both home and away games. They cheered along with the pep club and helped to promote spirit at the games. 1. Rocky supports the team. 2. The Coyote's Den in action. Cabinet: S. Lorenzen, President; B. FHA The Future Homemakers of America started the school year off with Rush Day. The purpose of Rush Day was to inform anyone interested in FHA what it was all about. Two, of the many accomplishments of FHA was their participation in the Homecoming Parade and their making Christmas stockings for the faculty. Guest speakers were a highlight at the meetings. Mrs. Edward Domme demonstrated making artificial flowers and Mrs. Arthur Krumrey demonstrated quilling. As a money making project the girls served at the 4-H Banquet. The year ended by helping with the ARC Bike-a-Thon. Back Row: B. Shipp, S. Lorenzen, C. Woolard. Middle Row: C. Wetzel, P. Osgood, Mrs. Murphy, Sponsor; C. Shipp, T. Ellis. Front Row: T. Their activities included a field trip, speakers, a visit to the hospital, and individual work in a medical field that the students were considering as a career. In April, the club traveled to Halstead, where they visited the Health Museum, and also toured the hospital in Hutchinson. They visited the Edwards County Hospital Intensive Care Unit and EKG lab. Speakers included June Kopp and Tom Talley on Business Administration, and a representative of the U.S. Army on Medical Opportunities in the Armed Forces. First Row: C. Dykes, Nursing; T. Work Study is an experience of which 27 senior students participated in this year. This program allowed students to obtain vocational training while still attending High School. These students worked from one to two hours daily in a business in the Kinsley Cff-erle community. At these job sites, the students were given an opportunity to learn more about a job which they have been considering as a career. This year was very successful and the program continues to grow every year. 18 One-Act Play Cast: R. Williams, L. Livengood, S. Har-nish, C. Josefiak, L. Metzler, P. Laudick, K. Hamish, V. Hamish. Forensics Under the direction of a new forensics coach, Mr. Richard Herman, the KHS forensics team enjoyed a very successful year. Its twenty-six member squad ended the year by bringing home thirteen state gold medals, four of which were 1+ratings. Highlighting the season was the one-act play Interview which received a second place trophy at Garden City, a first place state at Wichita and a 1+rating at state. Many individual events also received medals throughout the year. In addition, twenty members received medals for their hard work and achievements throughout the forensics season. It was a year of change for the yearbook staff and it began with a new sponsor, Miss Marilyn Bauer. She and her staff felt the need to add a couple of new divisions to the yearbook thus necessitating the addition of thirty pages to its size. The staff also tried its hands at some border and ink art and at using various styles of lettering. Meeting the deadlines and finances was as hectic as usual, but it was worth the time to help retain some of the memories of 76-77. The yearbook staff would like to extend its appreciation to Mr. Randy Sawyer who designed the artwork for the division pages and to the Kinsley Mercury who supplied us with many of our pictures. The KHS girls' volleyball team ended their season by finishing fourth in the regional tournament played at Meade. The team was under the first year coaching experience of Coach Jody Lilly. Other volleyball action found the squad capturing third place honors in the Central Prairie League Tournament held in Sterling. The team was seeded third in the tournament and their only loss came in the second round action to LaCrosse. The girls have a good season to look forward to next year as they return with nearly everyone from this year's team which posted a 12-7 season record. 1. Sharon serves the ball. 2. Strategy. 3. With 25 enthusiastic boys going out for wrestling and 8 meets to attend, exciting things were bound to happen during the KHS wrestling season. Exciting things did happen for Coaches Lee Martin and Greg Ice. The team had an overall record of 6-2. Fourth place was captured at the Ulysses Invitational. The teams' two trophies were won at the Ellsworth (second place) and Halstead (first place) In-vitationals. The Regional meet at Douglas found the matmen taking third place honors. State 1-2A was held in Beloit. Seven wrestlers went; four took honors. Mike Compton, 1st place State Champion; Mike Wilson, 4th place; Fred Katz and Eddie Rathbum both took 8th place. The whole team placed 10th at the meet. With wrestlers like these, next season should be very promising with only three graduating seniors. B a s k e t b a 1 1 The Kinsley Coyote Varsity Basketball team captured the fifth place trophy at the St. John's Midwinter Sports Classic by beating Macksville, 59-53. With their defeat to LaCrosse in the first round of Regional Tournament play their season came to an unexpected halt. For the season the Coyotes finished slightly below .500 with an 8-10 overall record. With just four senior players on the squad, the future looks good for this year's coaches, Allen Tiller and Randy Sawyer. Junior Varsity. Back Row: K. Dark, L. Wagner, D. Strong, Coach Sawyer. The boys were eliminated early in the tournament as they dropped their first round game to Ellinwood in overtime, 58-51. This defeat did not keep the players down. They fought back and were first place winners in the Spearville Freshmen Tournament. They defeated Ingalls, Spearville, and Greensburg for the trophy. The team closed out the season with a 5-7 record under the coaching experience of Dennis Reule. Coach Randy Sawyer and his Junior Varsity Basketball squad met plenty of action with ten games being played during the season. A surprise note took place during the season with no tournament action being seen. With this happening the junior varsity was not able to add a trophy to the case. With the season record being 4-6 and the team averaging 48.5 poings per game, the prospects look bright for next year. A Team: Back Row: K. Schuet-te, A. Frame, L. Gleason, A. Peterson, K. The Kinsley High School Basketball girls just missed getting into the finals of the Macksville Invitational Tournament when they were edged out by Sterling, 39-36. Further tournament action found the girls playing and capturing third place honors against Stafford. Led by the scoring of Alicia Peterson who averaged 11.6 points per game, and Kathy Kohlmeier who hit 11 points a game, and the rebounding assistance of Terri Garrett and LeAnne Gleason the girls were a formidable opponent to any team. The girls finished their season, under the coaching direction of Jody Lilly and Cathy O'Neal, with a record of 10-8. 1. Stacy and Kathy get the rebound. 2. Alicia jumps higher. 3. Fine individual and team performances can describe the 1977 KHS boys' track season. One senior, five juniors, four sophomores and nine freshmen reported for the track season. The Coyote tracksters won the first place trophy in their quadrangular with a total of 100 points. Other meets found the thine lads winning medals and capturing honors in competition. Going into the regional track meet, hopes were high but none of the eleven tracksters were able to place for state competition. With only one graduating senior, hopes are great for an even better season next year. Medals and trophies were the results of the KHS girls' track season. Nine girls made up the team that attended seven meets. The Coyote girls won first place at the Meade Relays with a fine showing of 89 points. Even though the girls performed well at all meets, none of them were able to qualify for state. None of the tracksters were lost to graduation and next year should prove to be veiy exciting. Golf was another of the Coyote spring sports that enjoyed a highly satisfying season in 1977. Three seniors, three juniors, two sophomores and one freshman provided the Coyotes with experience and talent. They competed with some tough teams but were able to win medals at 6 out of 8 meets entered. Regional play found the golfers taking fifth place but failing to qualify for state by just a few strokes. Three golfers will be lost to graduation but a strong team is in prospect for the Coyotes again in 1978 with 5 returning letterman. Golf Team: R. Williams, D. Stanton, Coach Don Stuart, D. Strong, R. Laudick, K. Kamphaus, J. Heit, V. Contryman, J. Murphy, R. With seven wrestlers competing on the state level and other possible wrestlers who were injured, being of the same ability, what more could one ask for? Tremendous sacrifices, dedication, and desire made this season so successful. I owe a great amount of appreciation to those wrestlers who gave so much, and proved to themselves the importance of sharing together, victory and defeat. Wrestling may seem individualize, but I personally know 25 young men who worked together to make Kinsley the 10th team in 1-2 high schools in the state of Kansas. Junior Varsity Basketball - Randy Sawyer The past year we had young men participate in our junior varsity program. We considered the season a good one with a 4-6 win-loss record. Several players improved throughout the year which will make die upcoming year very bright. In all games we were very competitive as a team. The coaches found this very encouraging for the future in our league. The junior varsity worked very hard, developed in many areas did a find job and should continue to help develop a fine program on the varsity level. a very good freshman and sophomore team coming up. Coaches' Boys Track - Larry Korf This year's Kinsley High track team was one of the best in several years. We won the Kinsley Quadrangular with a score of 100 points. With loosing only one team member to graduation, next year should be even better with the fine junior class from this year and also Football - Greg Ice I do not believe our season can be finalized in a win-loss record. I feel it can be summarized by saying we finished with a winning attitude. After we had a number of boys quit, we found the boys that really wanted to play, not for the K-letter, the girl friend or the prestige, but for themselves. We found the boys that had the guts to stand up for what they believe in, that could sacrifice, that could make a tough decision even against peer pressure. I was especially proud at our Ellinwood game — greatly out manned in size and weight, they never gave up, which was to me our winning attitude. Also I would like to mention Coach Tiller who did a fine job in inspiration, dedication and backing me in very tough times. Freshmen Basketball - Dennis Reule The freshmen basketball team consisted of fourteen young men with very good attitudes, much desire and ability. It was a slow process combining the talents of St. Nicholas and the public schools, but with much hard work they completely turned a loosing season into a very successful one. We are looking forward to these young men providing the community with more enjoyment, and hopefully, a winning basketball program in the future. Congratulations to some fine, young athletes. Comments Varsity Basketball - Allen C. Tiller I was very pleased with this past basketball season. We had 39 boys out for basketball and with these numbers we easily filled our freshman, junior varsity and varsity teams. The varsity finished in the first division of the Central Pacific League with a 4th place finish. I felt that the 5th place finish in the 5t. John Tournament was a real highlight of the year. I know that the boys took great pride in doing so well at that tournament. The boys' team have made great progress in the past years and we are now to the point that, at every level from junior varsity to varsity, we are challenging for the top spot in the league. This improvement in athletics has improved our school's moral thus making school more fun to attend. Golf - Don Stuart The Kinsley golf team enjoyed one of its most successful seasons in recent years. The young men won medals at 6 out of 8 meets entered. The golf team failed only by a few shots at the golf regional to qualify for the state tournament. With five returning lettermen for next year, things look bright for a good season. Girls1 Volleyball, Basketball, Track - Jody Lilly Volleyball - The volleyball team consisted of 20 girls, with our record being 12-7. The starting six consisted of 4 sophomores, 1 junior, and 1 senior. Congratulations girls and good luck next year. Basketball - I was very proud this year with the basketball season. I feel the girls do have the potential to be a state team next year. The team consisted of 18 girls, with a record of 13-8. I feel the community should be looking forward to supporting these girls next year. Track - With nine girls reporting for track, I felt they did a fine job. These are nine girls the community should be very proud of. Also thanks to Ann, our fine manager. I have enjoyed working with these three groups of athletes very much. Good luck next year girls in all three sports. The band began the year by performing half time shows at the football games and leading the homecoming parade as it moved through Kinsley. The instrumental department then geared itself up for the upcoming winter sports events and a February 3 concert. At the semester break the band experienced a director change. Taking the place of Mr. Ron McWilliams was Mr. Dennis Jones. With the songs DECLARATION OVERTURE and OVERTURE FOR WINDS, Mr. Jones prepared the band for the League and State contests. Though receiving a III rating at League the band came back with a I, II, and III rating at State giving them an overall II rating. The instrumental department also took a flute trio and three soloists to the State Contest. The soloists were Jeff Murphy with his baritone, Lorene Katz with her flute, and Bill Josefiak with his snaredrum. All four received II ratings. At the State Piano Festival the instrumental department had four soloists perform: Jeana Katz, Lorene Katz, Renee Hattrup, and Martha Batt. All four girls received I ratings. After an exhausting two months of putting together a musical, which was performed on November 19 and 20, the choral department put together its own concert for January 20. Then there was a two month break while die department prepared for the March 24 League Contest held at the Barton County Community College. This was followed by a March 29 variety show and State Contest held in Dodge City on April 1 and 2. Though neither contests were held in Kinsley due to a lack of facilities, Kinsley hosted both league and state and did an excellent job of organizing them. On May 3 the choral department participated in its last concert of the year, the Pops'' concert. It was a relaxing evening that allowed the department to perform many popular songs and prepare for their tour to St. John and Macksville the following day. On November 2, 1976 the Kinsley High School National Honor Society had the responsibility of helping with the initiation ceremonies of the Lewis High School students into their newly organized chapter. The purposes of the National Honor Society are fourfold: Scholarship, with the challenge to continually expand the opportunities inherent in scholarship; Service, with the commitment to the idea of volunteering time and abilities to the creation of a better tomorrow; Leadership, in that power and resources are ineffectual without the guidance of a wise leader; and Character, the product of constant action, daily striving to make the right choice. Election to the National Honor Society is based on these four purposes and the recommendation of the high school faculty. Only a certain percentage of the upper three classes of the high school are eligible to be inducted into the National Honor Society each year. May 5, 1977 was when the Egghead Banquet was held. This was a time for the recognition of the honor students and the initiation of the newest members into National Honor Society. The old members performed the ceremony and each new member had the National Honor So-iety emblem pinned on by their mother. The newest members of Kinsley High School's National Honor Society are: Seniors Don Benish, Katrina Stegman and Karen Schuette; Juniors Sharon Carlson, Harlan Foraker and Kalen Ker-sting; Sophomores Mike Beck, Ann Frame and Jon Heit. National Honor Society 60 Egghead Banquet On May 5, 1977, Kinsley High School presented its Second Annual Egghead Banquet held at the United Methodist Church Fellowship Hall. M.C.s for the evening were Verne Harnish, valedictorian, and Pam Marcy, salutatorian, and the featured guest speaker was Mr. Robert Gadberry, Vice President and Director of Public Affairs for the Fourth National Bank and Trust Co. in Wichita. The hours of planning and preparation of a meal of 350 students is no easy undertaking. After the meal has been prepared it must be served and then comes the task of washing dirty dishes. It is not uncommon that 88 quarts of milk, 70 pounds of hamburger, 33 cups of flour and 12 gallons of green beans are used in the preparation of one noon meal. The year opened with the Juniors finally getting their long-awaited Class Rings. This was followed by two weeks of mad rushing about as Magazine Sales got underway. The goal this year, as it has been in previous years, was to beat last year's Juniors in the amount of subscriptions sold. The Juniors achieved this goal, and Kathleen Hamish was awarded a calculator for her efforts as Top Salesperson. Junior-Senior Prom is on everyone's minds along about the beginning of Second Semester. The Juniors have found it hard to keep Prom theme a secret from the other Underclassmen, and especially the Seniors. The Juniors have shown dedication in their work on Prom, and their work will be well remembered by the Seniors as well as the Juniors. The Class of 1978, just like all the Junior Classes before them, are looking longingly at becoming Seniors, and we wish them the best in the future. ft 1978 81 nvcQJWf April 30, 1977 found the Juniors, Seniors, and faculty dressed up in Mall their splendor. • This was the night for the Junior-Senior Prom, Stairway to Heaven.
