This evaluation takes place every seven years and is part of our North Central accreditation. A part of the evaluation (Below and to the Right) involved the interviewing of students in K.H.S. Flower girl, Julie Waknitz, and crown bearer, Darrin Habiger. « On February 20, 1976, the Girls' Athletic Association sponsored the 2nd Annual Mid-Winter Sports activities, this year centered around the theme, Hopes and Dreams . Royalty Between the A and B team My Sweet Lady , sung by Eddie Barnett, began the Homecoming assembly on October 3, 1975. The introduction of the Senior queen candidates and their escorts followed: Marsha Schmitt escorted by Kevin Gleason, Kim Kamphaus escorted by Richard Gaudio, Brenda Carothers escorted by Bill Schin-stock, and Kathy Brown escorted by Kelly Carroll. Shelley Lancaster Schmitt, Homecoming Queen 69, served as Mistress of Ceremonies for the program that followed: Rocky Williams singing, Morning Has Broken , Alicia Peterson doing an acrobatic dance to, Wildfire , LeAnn Gleason and Brenda Stanton tap dancing to, Sweet Gypsy Rose , and the cheerleaders performing a routine to Shining Star and leading chants and cheers. The afternoon activities began with the Mock Homecoming Queen candidates escorted into the gym by flower girl, Lucious Lyndel, and crown bearer, Killer Tiller. The beauties who followed included: Corney Connie (Kelly) Carroll escorted by Shake 'Em Up (Cindy) Schaller, Kuddley Karol-ine (Kevin) Konrade escorted by Bomber (Allyson) Burr, Mangy Marcella (Ronnie) Marcy escorted by Horrible (Darla) Heinz, and Atrocious Annabelle (Mike) Arnold escorted by Heroic (Missy) Heit. Class floats, organizational banners, the marching band, and the student body paraded downtown for the coronation. The suspense ended with the crowning of Mangy Marcella and the traditional kiss given by Horrible Heinz. Half time of the football game was the setting for the final festivities of Homecoming '75. The candidates were escorted into the traditional heart formed by the band as they played the theme song, My Sweet Lady . Flower girl, Julie Waknitz, and crown bearer, Darrin Habiger, were brought onto the field by Melissa Heit, Pep Club president. Kevin Konrade, team cpatain, then crowned Kim Kam Kamphaus Homecoming Queen '75. The game ended in a victory for the Coyotes over the St. John Tigers, 35-0. A dance followed in the St. Nicholas gym to the music of Slaughterhouse . games all athletes participating in the winter sports, wrestlers, girls' basketball players, and boys' basketball players, were recognized. The theme from Mahogany played as these Senior candidates were introduced: Mary Brown escorted by Richard Gaudio, Allyson Burr escorted by Eric Atwood, Marge Habiger escorted by Kevin Konrode, and Chris Tasset escorted by Mike Arnold. GAA president, Karen Schuette, announced the king, Eric Atwood, who then crowned Allyson Burr as queen and presented her with roses and a traditional kiss. A dance in the cafeteria followed to the sounds of Justice of the Peace . For the third year in a row, their hopes for a State Championship were destroyed. This year they were defeated in the championship game by Hill City. Kevin was out for football his Senior year and has been on the varsity basketball squad for 4 years. Kevin also won honors his Senior year by having the highest average score per game in the Central Prairie League. Congratulations! Mike Arnold is another of Kinsley's outstanding athletes for 1976. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Pete Arnold. Mike has been out for football, basketball, and track all 4 years of high school. Good job, Mike! Outstanding Senior Athletes Allyson Burr has done outstanding work in volleyball, basketball, and track in her years at Kinsley High School. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Myron Burr. Congratulations, Allyson! Kim Kamphaus, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Arnold Kamphaus, is one of our outstanding Coyotes. In her 4 years at Kinsley High she has participated in volleyball, basketball, and track. Best wishes, Kim. The Foreign Language Club has been busy throughout the year selling car tags and candy to raise money for a trip to Mexico. The money raised this year will be carried over to next year's group. The forensics team, coached by Ms, Bonnie Covert, had a very successful year with three out of nine students earning gold medals at State. Participating in this year's forensics team were Cindy Schaller, Kelly Carroll, Debbie Schaller, Patti Schultz, Verne Har-nish, Christi Woolard, Kathleen«Harnish, Betty Schuette, and Shelly Ryan. '• N • v V The first tournament was held at Carden City. Verne Hamish received a 1st Place Medal in Newscasting and Cindy Schaller received a 4th Place Medal in Poetry Interp. This led the team to the Ellinwood CPL contest on March 2nd, This contest proved to be a successful venture with four I's (excellent) and two H's (good) being earned. Receiving I's were Betty Schuette in Prose Interp., Christi Woolard in Poetry Interp., Kathleen Hamish in Informative Speaking and Verne Hamish in Dramatic Interp. Kelly Carroll and Verne Hamish received a II for their duet act and Shelly Ryan a II in Prose Interp. The Contest at Garden City on March 20 was the next step. This contest was important because a I rating here qualified a person for State. When it was over we had four staters, Shelly Ryan, Veme Hamish, Christi Woolard, and Cindy Schaller. Receiving H's were Kathleen Har-nish and Betty Schuette. Fort Hays State College was the final step. This was the location for State Contest on April 10. After 12 hours of work and waiting we emerged with three gold place winners, Christy Woolard in Poetry Interp., Verne Hamish in Dramatic Interp., and Shelly. Ryan in Prose Interp. The Drama Department, under the direction of Ms. Bonnie Covert, presented two all school plays to the public. They were entitled THE VALIANT by Hol-worthy Hall and Robert Middlemass and TAKE A LETTER by Lucille Crites. Katz Drum Major, Larry Ellis, Drum Majorette, Faye Carlson, and twirler Sandi Arensman helped start off Kinsley High School's band year by leading the Sound 70's marching band in two half-time shows. The band was under the direction of our new band director, Mr. Ron McWilliams. To supplement the half time shows the marching band performed in the Fort Hays State Marching Festival, receiving a III. Besides the marching band, the band department included the Concert Band, Pep Band, Trumpet Trio, and a piano soloist. On February 4 the Concert Band went on tour. Places visited included St. John, Stafford, and the Offerle Jr. High. A concert for the public was presented on March 1. As an extra this year die band performed in two parades. The first was the Homecoming parade, and the second was the Edwards County Bicentennial parade. Along with the Bicentennial activities the band also performed for the Bicentennial Wagon Train. On March 16 the band attended the League contest at Barton County Juco and received a II rating. Following League the band performed at the State Contest in Dodge City. Though receiving a III for their performance they received a I for sight reading. Also performing at State was the Trumpet Trio who received a III. Jeana Katz received a II at the State Piano Festival to be Kinsley's only instrumental soloist. The Pep Band was especially active this year. They perfomed at every home basketball game and wrestling match and at one away game at Dodge City. It also experienced a few changes, one being a new choral director, Miss Jo Schraeder. Throughout the year she was able to put together a department which included A'Cappella Chori, Concert Choir, Chamber Singers, Girls Ensemble, Boys Ensemble, Girls Trio, and seven soloists. The choral department started the year with a December 15th Christmas concert. Then came a break while the groups and soloist got ready for the league and state contest. March 16th came soon enough. This was the day of League Contest at the Barton County Juco. On March 26th the choral department presented its second concert for the public. State Contest was held in Dodge City with the choral groups performing on April 2 and the soloist on April 3. Pauline Sollitt catered the banquet. Could It Be Magic set the scene for the 1976 Junior-Senior Banquet and Prom. The evening began with a program at 6:30 in the auditorium. Fred Olsen, Junior class president, welcomed the Seniors, faculty, and board members and was host for the following program. Pam Marcy, Sheryl Craig, Karen Schuette, and Martha Herrmann sang the theme song Could It Be Magic accompanied by Beverly Shipp. Alicia Rhorer, Terri Garrett, Renee Mathews, Sharon Elpers, Katrina Stegman, and Debbie Schaller did a modem dance to, That's Tlie Way I Like It . Verne Hamish, Bambino, entertained the crowd with magic and illusion. The Sophomore servers, Betty Schuette and Bob Janzen, Liz Burr and Chris Rush, Sharon Carlson and John Habi-ger, Candy Nall and Randy Gray, and Cindy Carlson and Eddie Rathbum then escorted the guests into the banquet. A bridge over a small stream and pond led into the moonlit walkway. The sky was of various colored stars above trees and flowers which lined the path. The main room featured a fountain of blue water and a pond in the middle. A quiet waterfall trinkled through colored lights on one wall. A castle.decorated one wall and a mural of magical lands was on another. Dinner was served at 8:00 with an appetizer of tomato juice and combination salad followed by smothered steak, green beans, baked potatoes, french bread and tea. For dessert, ice cream was served. Baccalaureate was held Sunday, May 16, in the high school auditorium. The speaker this year was Reverend Graner from the Epis copal Church. Rev. Graner also gave the In vocation and Benediction. It was a time to think back and look ahead. K.H.S. Graduates Of ’76 Commencement exercises for the class of 1976 were different from years past. The graduates themselves took part in the program. The Invocation was given by Cindy Schaller (Far Left), followed by the welcome given by Kevin Gleason. The address, with the theme of the poem, The Road Not Taken , was given by Faye Carlson, (Far Right). Principal, Bill Frit-schen, presented the graduates and the School Board President, Dr. Rodney Oliphant, presented the diplomas.
