WOOD TABLE OF CONTENTS Administration 2 Faculty 4 Seniors 19 Underclassmen 33 Royalty 43 Organizations 51 Athletics 73 Foreword High School is four years of firsts and lasts. It is the time of your first Mixer and Junior-Senior Prom. As a senior it becomes a time of good-byes to lifelong friends. With the passing of years, may you look back upon the 1970-71 school year with only pleasant thoughts. This book serves as an eternal record of the pleasant memories of KHS. We, the annual staff, have strived to capture within these pages the essence of these irretrievable years. 2 Administration New to Kansas as well as to U. S. D. 347, is Dr. William H. Phillips. Dr. Phillips received his doctorate from the University of New Mexico, and his undergraduate and master's degrees from schools in Texas. Previous to completing his doctorate, Dr. Phillips has served as a classroom teacher, a principal of both elementary and secondary schools, and as superintendent. Having known some difficult times in the course of gaining his education, Dr. Phillips was a fighter holding scholarships in Boxing. He is still a fighter, but now his cause is for better schools for the youth of this community. A very major portion of his time this past year has been spent in seeking additional funds and to make the very best use of the funds which are available to support the schools in our district. He has worked closely with civic groups including die Boy Scouts, the American Legion and the Rotarians, as the programs of these groups relate to the work and welfare of the young people. DR. PHILLIPS SUPERINTENDENT Miss Nadine L. Stallard has been a member of the staff of KHS the past six years, and in addition to serving as counselor to the students in KHS has been given responsibilities in the areas of the Title Programs and the Cooperative Special Education program. Miss Stallard has had all of her college work at the University of Kansas, receiving the Specialist Degree in Guidance and Counseling in 1965. Additional specialized work has been taken at the University of Chicago three different summers. This work was in the area of psychological testing as related to both intelligence and personality. At KHS Miss Stallard is co-sponsor of the National Honor Society, and formerly has been Pep Club sponsor. Miss Stallard has been active in her professional counselor groups, and is currently national vice-president for Secondary Counselors of the American School Counselor's Association. MISS STALLARD COUNSELOR Mr. William C. Scott, high school principal, previously was a social science teacher and wrestling coach at Olathe, Kansas. Earlier he taught one year in a large vocational school in St. Louis. He quickly found that he preferred Kansas and high school youth. Mr. Scott is a graduate of Baker University at Baldwin, Kansas, and received his master's degree in school administration from the University of Kansas. In addition to serving as high school principal, he is also the Athletic Director, and in these combined roles has come to know the students, the coaches, and patrons of this community. As principal, Mr. Scott is the sponsor of the National Honor Society, and Adviser to the Student Council of KHS. MR. SCOTT PRINCIPAL 3 MRS. BIGANE English French MR. BELL Drafting Driver Education Health MISS DAVIS MRS. DELP Librarian Art Faculty Kinsley High School has in the 1970-71 school year, twenty faculty members. Of these, ten are male and ten are female. The average KHS teacher is married and has 1.615 children. Collectively they hold a total of 3,031 college hours, 189 years of teaching, and 93 1 2 years of these have been at K. H. S. It is interesting to note that the student-teacher ratio is 13. 25 to 1. From 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. five days a week, the faculty pass knowledge on to the students of K.H. S. Besides their time during school hours, the teachers spend many more hours advising, coaching, and sponsoring activities. MRS. DEHAVEN Business MR. KASSELMAN Mathematics MR. KILGORE MR. KINGRY MRS. DEPAR TMENTS Mrs. McKee helping Maurice Schaller understand his lesson. During the 1970-1971 school year, the students of K.H. S. developed their language skills in English, Spanish, French, and Speech courses. Latin was dropped because of a lack of a teacher. Thanks to Mrs. Winkler, Mrs. Bigane, Mrs. McKee, and Miss Striet, the learning and understanding of the languages was made easier. Advanced Senior Composition was offered in place of Journalism this year. Underclassmen and upperclassmen all feel that they have to take too much English, but without it how could they ever communicate with their neighbors? English And Miss Streit's fourth hour English I class. Larry Wingfield listens closely as Greg VanCoevem gives a speech. Mrs. Winkler during Advanced Senior Composition Class. 8 Spanish students doing board work. Foreign Language Spanish and French classes both decided to start clubs this year. The Spanish Club, under the direction of Mrs. Winkler, carried out many projects to help finance their trip to Mexico. The French Club, sponsored by Mrs. Bigane, had a Christmas party at the home of Keith Kirby. Mrs. Bigane helps Jana Olsen, French I student. Miss Streit helps Debbie Putter with the day's lesson. Mathematics Bill Gillett and Steve Netzel find uses for the science equipment. And Science David Kastner and Steve Wetzel show interest in Mr. Kilgore's experiment. Mr. Reule posing a question in general science. As the science and technology of our changing world advances, so must we improve in our efforts to comprehend these changes. Many hours of hard work are spent in the science and math classrooms. To make our hours shorter and our work a little easier, our competent teachers—Mr. Kilgore, Mr. Kassel-man, and Mrs. Korf saw that we found a way, or helped make one for us. Mr. Kilgore assisting Robbie Holland. 11 David Stevens dissecting in Biology. Social Science Curtis Blank cross-examines Larry Perez in mock court. Teaching the fundamentals of our political heritage are Mr. Martin, Mr. Ross, and Mr. Stuart. The courses offered this year in the social science field are American history, American government, psychology, sociology, economics, world history, social geographical history, and current history. Current history is a new course which deals with events since 1945. Through these many courses, the students have learned more about the traditions and history of the U. S., and the culture of the people around them. World History isn't always so serious. Current History visits City Library. Mr. Stuart teaching new course, Current History. Kinsley is one of the very first schools in Kansas to be offering IACP, a very different approach in the teaching of industrial arts. The curriculum is broad based providing the student with many conditions similar to those found in the work world. KHS ninth graders course was the World of Construction. Lynn Marcy receiving help from Mr. Bell in drafting. IACP class learning the basics of building a house. Mr. Murphy showing proper use of lathe. PE And Drivers Ed Jay DilT'igently practicing Mr. Atlas Physical Education was improved this year with the addition of boxing. Weight lifting obtained a more active status and became an important part of the physical fitness program. Each of the 60 Drivers Ed. students spent 60 hours in the classroom, 6 hours driving, and 30 hours observing. This course enabled the students to receive Kansas drivers' licenses without taking the usual test. More important, however, is that insurance companies and others value this training as being instrumental in reducing auto accidents on the highways. Insurance companies reward parents of these students with lower rates. Tim and Buddy sparring Karl and Wiley pairing off for a fight. Mr. Bell pointing out the mysteries of a motor Fine Arts The percussionists getting ready for pep assembly. Bonnie and Mary Beth at the winter concert. Larry Perez with his winning picture and trophy won at WKEA Art Show. Miss Wallenburg getting music for choir. Fine Arts have an important place in the Kinsley High School curriculum. All at KHS have participated in art this year as a student or as an observer. Student work has been displayed in the hallways and lunch room as well as in an art show downtown. Kinsley High artists also competed at the WKEA Art Show at Tribune and won many coveted medals. The music department presented band and vocal concerts during the year. The band marched at the Kansas State Fair and entertained at athletic events. Choral and instrumental ensembles perform for local clubs and compete in the state music festival. Special Services Miss Stallard Miss Stallard did a great deal for the school this year in her capacity as counselor. The seniors in particular found her advice and aid helpful as they prepared to leave high school. Nikie Poison Nikki Poison, a KHS senior, was a considerable help to Miss Stallard as her secretary. With her aid, Miss Stallard was able to spend more time working with the students. Miss Davis Miss Davis improved the school by helping both students and teachers find needed information for study and research. She worked hard to keep the library effective and up to date. 4 Mrs. Troutman Mrs. Troutman was always available to comfort and take care of the sick at KHS. She supervised the TB and dental checks and gave eye checks to the freshmen and juniors and ear checks to the sophomores and seniors. 18 Class Of Class Motto: We'll Find A Wray Or Make One Colors: Sapphire Blue and Silver Flower: Silver Tipped Blue Mum Sponsors: Mrs. Delp, Mr. Ross JILL FOX PRESIDENT School Play, 2,4; Class Officer 4; Kayettes 1,2, 3,4; Pep Club 1,2, 3,4; Band 1,2, 3,4: Glee Club 1,2; Choir 2; Fresh.-Soph.
