1970 KIHISCHO Published by Yearbook Staff Kinsley-Offerle High School Kinsley, Kansas We, the yearbook staff, wish to dedicate the 1970 Kihischo to an outstanding woman who has given forty-seven years of her life to teaching others. She is now in her twenty-ninth year at Kinsley High School, and the student body would like to say Thanks for everything she has done. Miss Peterie has taught English and Latin and was the originator and advisor of the school paper, the KHS Breezes. In past years she has also been the advisor for the yearbook. Miss Peterie has received a number of awards. This spring she was honored as an outstanding teacher of journalism in Kansas, and in 1963, she was named a Master Teacher by Kansas State Teachers College, Emporia. We feel that it is an honor to dedicate this yearbook to her, and this is our way of showing our love, respect, and appreciation. Thank you, Miss Peterie!! Happy Birthday!! Miss Peterie Discussing work of photography staffs with Mrs. DeHaven and Joe Hamm. Greeting guests at reception. Conferring with parents at Open House. Board of Education Mr. Woods, Dr. Eldon Gray, Dr. Atwood, Mr. Crouch, Mr. Wagner, Mr. Beck and Mr. Kersting. Mrs. Ptacek (not shown) is also a board member. The board of education under the guidance of Dr. Atwood, president, spends many hours in transacting the business of U.S.D 347 in order to make this a better school. No payment is received by these board members who devote the first Monday of each month, plus additional meetings, planning school affairs. Their work is done in order that we students may benefit. CONTENTS FOREWORD With the passage of years, may you look back upon this school year with pleasant memories. To preserve a record of these moments, this annual strives to capture the eyes and mind of the activities and the character of Kinsley High School. CROUCH Mr. Melvin Crouch is completing his eighth year as superintendent of the Kinsley School District. During this time many changes and improvements have been made in the school. A new wing was added to the high school housing the cafeteria and classrooms and the junior high transferred to Offerle. District 347 resulted with the unification of the Offerle and Kinsley school districts. Mr. Crouch has supported the school with his attendance at all school events. Administrators MR. MORELAND PRINCIPAL Mr. John C. Moreland, high school principal for the past four years, has been an able administrator for KHS. His interest in the high school has been evident by his thorough planning of school events and his attendance and support of all school activities. 5 English And Foreign Languages MR. MUNDHENKE English Psychology To be able to communicate is vital in this madly changing world. The hours spent by KHS students in studying English will prove to be the most valuable expended in their high school years. Reading, writing, speaking, and listening are skills stressed in our English Department. English and communications are offered at all grade levels; speech and journalism are junior and senior courses. French and Latin are the foreign languages available at KHS. MISS PETERIE MISS LOSEY MR. BARR English English English Latin Speech French Journalism Checking the motor is also a part of the Driver Education course. This driving team has just completed that check. (Randy Swenson, Denise Kastner, Joe Hora-cek, and Kay Hamish are shown with Mr. Bell.) MR. ROSS American History Economics Sociology Social Sciences The teaching of the fundamentals of democracy, history and traditions of our political heritage is the responsibility of the Social Science Department. Courses in this department include world, social and American history, government, psychology, sociology, economics, and driver education. Through study in this area, students are helped to know and understand more about themselves and the people around them. MR. TRAIL American Government Football and Track Coach MR. MARTIN World History Wrestling and Golf Coach MR. BELL Driver Education Basketball Coach Richard Herrmann won the coveted Ed Davis Award for his entry, a bent-wood rocker, in the Hays Industrial Arts Fair. This project was a new concept in Industrial Arts because much research and experimentation had to be done on bending the wood. Practical Arts Vocational Education is an important phase of the extensive curriculum offered in Kinsley High School. Through this department, students can gain the necessary knowledge to enter a profitable trade after graduation. Courses offered in the business department include typing, shorthand, bookkeeping and office practice. In home economics, three years of study are available to the student. The Make It With Wool contest and the Tea and Style Show enable the girls to display their handicraft. Industrial Art classes that are available include power mechanics, general shop, general metals, drafting, crafts, and industrial arts I and II. MR. KIRBY Industrial Arts Drafting Crafts MRS. DEHAVEN MRS. KIRBY MR. MURPHY Business Home Economics Power Mechanics General Metals Shop Advanced P. E. girls had archery as one of their spring activities (Sherry Setzkom and Sandra Rose are pictured.) MR. KILGORE Mathematics Physics Math And Science Science is always on the move and changes occur frequently in this field. Adjusting to these changes is a major task of the science department. Courses available to the KHS student in science and math include general science, biology, advanced biology, chemistry, physics, general math, algebra I and II, geometry, trigonometry and calculus. MR. SCHARTZ Biology Chemistry MR. KASSELMAN MISS MILES Mathematics Biology and General Science Girls P. E. Fine Arts To have a well-rounded school curriculum, the fine arts must be included. Art courses this year have been designed to broaden the students appreciation of art as well as help them improve their ability to create. The music department presented vocal and band concerts during the year. Choral and instrumental ensembles perform for local clubs and compete in the state music festival in the spring. The KHS band joined other bands from the state at KU's Band Day in the fall. MR. KINGRY Instrumental Music 10 MISS WALLENBERG Vocal Music Putting books on the shelves has been only one of the tasks Marjorie Hirsh has performed as a student librarian. MISS DAVIS Librarian Special Services KHS is fortunate to have the services of trained personnel other than instructors of classes. These ladies are available if you have need of them. The librarian can help you find material for a term paper; the nurse is available if you're ill; and if you have a problem, the counselor is there to listen and advise. MISS ST ALLARD MRS. ZINK MRS. TROUTMAN Counselor Speech Therapist School Nurse Student Teachers Mrs. McKay, Mr. Priest, Mrs. Ackerman Secretaries No school can be administered efficiently without a smoothworking office staff. Mrs. Sparke with the assistance of Mrs. Loren-zen (first semester) and Mrs. Welsch (last semester) is secretary to the superintendent, and Mrs. Headrick is secretary to the principal. These four with their thoroughness and ability make up such an office staff. In cooperation with St. Marys and Emporia Teachers College, we have had three student teachers at KHS in the English and industrial art departments. The play was centered around Tom Arsdale and Okie Stimson, who were roommates. Okie enjoyed being around girls, but Tom was girl shy. Tom's father had already picked Tom's future wife, whom Tom had no intention of marrying. To outwit his father Tom became engaged to a girl he met on campus, and complications developed rapidly. This merry farce ended with each character finding a new romance for himself. I suppose I shouldn't give her away, but she's really mad about you. 49 The Marching 100 BOTTOM ROW: C. Hearn, T.
