THE WHITE HOUSE WASHINGTON October 27, 1987 I am happy to send greetings to all who celebrate the 25th anniversary of Kinnelon High School. No nation can maintain its freedom or advance socially and materially without committing itself to the educa- tion of its youth. On this milestone you can be justly proud of the teachers and staff who have helped so many young people recognize their gifts, reach their potential, and better understand their moral and civic responsibilities. Kinnelon High School has earned a place of honor in the community and in the hearts and memories of its graduates. It has nurtured well-informed citizens who care not just for their own personal happiness, but for the well-being of their country and of the entire world. In so doing it has rendered an outstanding service to our nation. Nancy joins me in commending you for all that has been accomplished at your school. You have our warm best wishes for continued success in the years ahead. God bless you all. PEGASUS ’88 KINNELON HIGH SCHOOL “A YEAR OF CELEBRATION” VOLUME 24 I Will you remember? Spuds Mackenzie ... With players ranging from the class of '65 to the class of ’86, these alumni showed their support and loyalty throughout the preparation and game time. It was exciting to see well over one thousand enthusiastic spectators turn out for the game. Although the hard-fought game was won by Lakeland, the Kjnnelon players anxiously look forward to a rematch next year. Much credit is due to all players, to the coaches, Mr. Louis Whrite- nourand Mr. Buddy Decker, to Mr. Robert Sawyer, and to the Varsity Club, for their planning and organization. 4 PEP RALLY SEPTEMBER 25, 1987 “A GREAT KICKOFF TO OUR 25th YEAR” Clockwise. Heidi Huber is a tribute to KHS’s 25th anniversary, as she has utilized her four years at KHS not only to pinpoint her own identity, but also to expand the potential of KHS. Not only has she been an asset to Kinnelon’s sports, namely basketball, track, and cross-country, but also she has displayed leadership as class president, student council member, amd National Honor Society member as well. Her leadership and perseverence has in turn rewarded her greatly. As a result of her efforts, she has received such honors as : Governor's School nominee, Kinnelon Girl's Citizenship Institute and Girl's State alternates. As she voiced her appraisal of KHS during the 25th anniversary, Heidi claimed that KHS has increased tremendously in spirit and optimism, especially in supporting team sports. She also praised the graduating seniors, in that they have become more unified as a class in winning the Spirit Week trophy for the past two years. Heidi hopes to continue in her sucess at such Universities as Clemson, Penn State, or Syracuse eventually working as an architect. Joe Werner ( “Opie” ) has persistently been a role model for all students during his four years at KHS. He has been actively involved in such sports including ski team, football, and track, while maintaining leadership in student government. Varsity Club, and Yearbook. Joe has also been an asset to the Float, Prom, and Spirit Committees. A determined scholar, Joe has also received a letter of commendation as a National Merit Semi-Finalist as well as a Garden State Distinguished Scholar nomination. Commenting on KHS during the 25th anniversary year, Joe says that there is more participation and pride in our school then during his first year. True to these membership qualities, KHS’s chapter of the National Honor Society boasts some of our school’s most outstanding students. Having recently upgraded its standards, NHS demands excellence of each member as well as group participation in community events. Under the leadership of pres. Bill Hook, treas. Pete Chiappetta, and sec. Danielle Tahan, NHS prospered throughout the entire year. While upholding the traditional activities such as the Alumni Tea, the Entertainment Book sale, and the annual spring picnic, NHS also initiated an annual Christmas Carolling to its list of acticities. In addition, various members fulfilled tutoring responsibilities for other K.HS students. The daily duty of distributing the New York Times throughout the school was regularly fulfilled by Andy Domonkos, Agim Perolli, and Steve Leung. In Celebrating ICHS’s silver anniversary, this proved to be one of NHS’s most successful years. (top row) J. Grippo. R. Klein, G. Hince, P. Chiappetta, B. Hook. R, Krupnick, K. Gustavsen, G. Grey, A. NEWSPAPER The Hitching Post has returned! Sporting the name of the first KHS school newspaper, the 1988 version has both continued with tradition, and started a few of its own. This year the newspaper, under advisor Melissa Dorang, has funded itself entirely by advertisements, allowing the paper to be distributed to all students at no expense. Now everyone can read the hitching Post's book and movie reviews, sports articles, school polls, and current events. (Top row) S. Werner, R. Hook, T. Javed. N. Carcn (Boitom row) L. Petronino. M. Among this year’s accomplishments is the acquisition of a juice machine, the home- coming dance and bonfire, pudding wrestling, the Christmas dance, and a successful blood drive. All of these activities have been made possible by the outstanding leadership of advisor Norman Balchunas and the Student Council officers. The aims of the council are as follows: to promote leadership; to generate new ideas for enhancing the school’s educational atmosphere; to maintain school spirit; and to respond to student concerns. With persistence and diligence the council was able to attain these goals and keep alive school traditions by having played a key role in the 25th Anniversary Celebration. The council was responsible for a generous donation to the Heal the Children Fund. 70 FRENCH CLUB The French Club, enjoyed by many interested French students, has been quite active this year. Mrs. Khoobiar advised the club which also functioned as a part of the International Club. Under the leadership of senior captains Sheri Burichin and Kcri Edwards, the team made a strong impression in the Colonial Hills ( onference. Many of the team’s starters will be back on the field next season, including the team’s two top point scorers, Margaret Furtak and Niki Grainger. Led by senior captains Todd Price and Rob Rosenquist, the Colts per- formed well in this year’s Montville Christmas and County tournaments, and also reached the state tour- nament. Senior scoring machine Todd Price gained his 1000th career point this season, becom- ing the 4th boys player in Kinnelon Basketball to reach this prestigious mile- stone. A highlight of the 1988 season was the matchup between Kin- nelon and Mountain Lakes at the Meadowlands, in which the Colts were vic- torious. Seniors Frank Jennings. I 107 GIRLS BASKETBALL After losing seniors Jill Struble and Diralyn Strain and experiencing a coaching change, expectations for a great season were not running very high. But after a short period of transition, the team really came together under new coach, Mr. Tom Brown Major achievements included a winning record of 17-7 which brought the team into the first round of the state tourney Unfortunately a broken pinky, and a first round seed against one of the best teams in the state, ended their bid early. Senior Heidi Huber reached the rare plateau of scoring her 1000th career point two games before the end of the season. Coach Sawyer’s squad fought all year, although the team was constantly disappointed by major setbacks. Bruce Davies, a sophomore, proved to be the squad’s strongest wrestler with a high of seven wins. Next weighing in at 103 was lightweight Damon Kearns with six wins and Mike Pagella weighing at 130 also had six wins. Jack Stewart is a promising freshman that will be heavily depended on these next three years. The wrestling team is looking forward to a promising season next year. With such underclassmen standouts as Barbara Banks, and Erika Walker, who were chosen for fust team all conference. Coach Whritenour is excited for a successful season for the girls team next year. The determination and ability of Keira Cruz, also chosen for first team all conference, will always be admired and missed. The boys team will also miss the senior leadership of Rudi Muenster and Karl Ludwig, but is anticipating another great season next year with the experience of the underclassmen, Ricky Schaupp, Chuck Jones, Ryan Pace, Justin Renfrew-Hill, and Kevin O’Riley. 4 (lop row) Greg Fcmstrum, Kurt Fernstrum (Capt). Last year, for the first time in Kinnelon Lacrosse history, the team had two Juniors elected to the N.J. All-State Team: midfielder Frank Jennings and goalie Ken Kane. The exceptional play of these two standouts helped Kinnelon earn last year’s outstand- ing record of 13 — 3, as well as the Garden State League Champion- ship with a victory over Mountain Lakes. On the offensive end, the Colts are led by returning attack star Greg Rose. Last year, he com- piled an impressive team — lead- ing twenty-five goals along with nineteen assists. Kinnelon’s stingy defense, with all seven members returning, let up only sixty-two goals last season — an average of 3.8 goals per game. The defense is anchored by All-State goalie Ken Kane, along with All-League selec- tion Todd Kuimjian, defending groundball champion Eric Leuthold, Paul Iggena, Peter Chiappetta, Joe Grippo, and Chris Lydle. The other returning starters for the Colts are Co-Captain and All-League selection Jay Gleason, and Co-Captain Robert Rosen- quist. (Clockwise) All State Goalie Ken Kane makes the save. Last year the team had a discouraging record of 3-13 due to the loss of star players Cathy Russinko and Cathy Hendy, who both needed surgery at the beginning of the season. Also. Coach Whritenour adds, “With the return of pitcher Angela Smith, the conference championship is within reach.” The keen eyed catcher, Adrienne Turzilli, along with other outstanding junior players C. Burley, C. Chapman, N. Clayton, and D. Hook contributed greatly to the team’s success. 120 (top row) Michelle Onofrow, Kim Brugnoli. Kewho Min, and Ken Gus- tavsen each had a great season and helped the team to achieve their outstanding record. Under the di- rection of Coach Quinn and Coach Neswald, this years Colts worked to achieve their personal best in every event. Picture Not Available 144 SILVER ANNIVERSARY “A YEAR OF CELEBRATION” Imagine waking up one morning, out- side your window is a blanket of white snow. You snuggle underneath the cov- ers happily anticipating your day off from school. But you are soon awakened by the sound of sleigh bells. The im- passable roads of Kinnelon were made passable by the Kayharts bobsled and team of horses. You are whisked from Kinnelon down to Butler HS where you are joined by other students arriving from Wycoff, West Milford, Ringwood and Jefferson by train. The sleigh bells then become school bells. The halls of Butler HS are crowded. In fact, by 1958 the school's capacity of 800 was exceeded with a student body of over 1400. A committee of the Boards of five schools met, led by Victor Carter, and decided Kinnelon should build its own High School. It was hard to imagine a school built on the 54 acres that the Board had purchased (at a cost of $67,000). At the time Kinnelon Road had not yet been built nor had the Mu- nicipal Building nor the Library. At first the Board had planned for the land that these buildings stand on today to be the athletic facilities. The Borough decided that they should trade the school the land across from the HS for the land across the street for it’s playing fields. These decisions were all made at the Fayson Lakes Clubhouse which housed the Board of Ed. on its second floor. Ground was broken and construction began, although construction difficulties delayed the opening of the school for three weeks. But on September 24, 1963 Kinnelon High School began to hold its class in Kiel school 145 FROM START .. i Progress begins ... Constuction begins to take shape outside ... As well as inside ... Floors and windows arc added in ... Final phase of completion. 146 TO FINISH KHS opened its brand new doors on Oct 15, 1962. for the 9th and 10th grades on a half- session basis. Finally on October 15, they were moved to the semi- completed HS. Along with the ex- citement of being the first students attending the HS came the pitfalls: cold rooms, catwalks, class changes signaled by a large cow bell, and fire drills called by a bull horn. By the Spring of 1963, the High School was complete and in the spring of 1967 the first senior class graduated. The graduating class of 1988 had the privilege of celebrating the 25th Anniversary. These students have seen the many changes during their four year stay, but not as many as KHS has seen during its first 25 years. When the class of 1988 grad- uates pass KHS’ doors they will enter a world for which they are adequately prepared. Quality and successfull- ness, two characteristics taught here, are portrayed by KHS’ newest alum- ni. KHS has honored two such past alumni with grand welcoming home parties, Col. Pailles and Kurt Al- lerman. Although not surprising be- cause KHS has a number of Alumni who have thrived in every career from business to entertainment. The class and faculty of 1988 would like to congratulate KHS on its past and wish KHS the best for the future. For eighteen years, Mr. Bolles coached track and cross-sountry at Kinnelon and in that time, captured nine State Sectional Cross-Country titles and two State Cross-Country Championships, but more importantly, his inspiration and guidance have enriched the lives of all he coached and educated. Mr. Bolles will be most fondly remembered for his teaching skill, both in athletics and as an English instructor at Kinnelon High School. His students learned in spite of themselves. To honor his memory the Ado Bolles perpetuating Scholarship Fund was established. A scholarship will be awarded annually to a graduating member of the Cross-Country team. Yearly scholarships have been awarded since 1982. Question: Why did you first come to KHS? Answer: I came to Kinnclon H.S. because my children were grown and I wanted to keep my secretarial skills. I also felt it would be interesting to get in on the planning stages of a new school. Question: How has it affected you? Answer: It has been interesting to work among young people and to sec them mature as they grew from freshmen to seniors. In our first years, seventh and eighth grades were also housed in the high school, so of course the maturation was much more pronounced. Question: Why did you first come to KHS? Answer: I wanted a job further west of my previous one in Montclair Academy to facilitate moving out of the urban congestion of Union, where I lived. Question: How do you feel about the students of KHS? Answer: Kinnclon seemed like a school where a large percent of the students would be academically oriented. Question: How has teaching at KHS effected you? Answer: After deciding to change jobs, I wanted to switch to public school to take advantage of the higher salary scales. Question: Why did you first come to KHS? Answer: After my graduation, I worked for six years in banking until my daughter was born. After her arrival, I remained home with her for eleven years. I was considering the invitation to return to the bank when Mrs. Pelterson called me about the attendance job in the new high school. I was not sure if I wanted it or not, but I filled out the application which she had mailed me and went for an interview with our first principal, Mr. Leroy Swoycr. After my meeting with him, he sent me to the su- perintendent, Mr. Dale Reinhardt. By the time I left his office, I had the job. I still was not sure if I really wanted it or not but, I reasoned that it might be better to take a job with more time off since my daughter was still young and of course I could always quit if it did not work out. I never dreamed I would be here so long. 149 SENIORS FROM THE PAST William A.
