Their invaluable service includes circulating the most recent science fiction best sell- ers, filing daily newpapers and magazines, and stamping out books to students. They help maintain a placid ambience for serious study and research. Kinnelon High would be less if not for the efforts of Mrs. Briggs and her Library Council. Chess With the advanced strategies given by the chessmaster, Mr. William Sharp, the Chess Team completed yet another successful year. Chess has been known as a grueling, an- cient, intellectual game that only a select few can truly master; conse- quently, the Chess Team is com- posed of the truly bright minds of the school. 68 Will Hold Fond Memories. AVA Under the supervision of Mr. William McNeir, the AVA Club as- ists in meeting the audio and vi- sual technical needs of the school community. The members are re- sponsible for the efficient deliv- ery, organization and operation of the equipment used in class- rooms, the library, sporting events, and a special school as- semblies. Art Club With Mr. Frank Scarpetta’s help, the Art Club welcomes all those students who enjoy artistic en- deavors or who simply like to en- rich their artistic talents. One of their main projects this year was the construction of “Stairway To Heaven” built from lumber, con- crete and steel which was placed near the parking lot and greatly enhances its natural surround- ings. Hostess Club Guided by Mrs. Marilyn Petersen, the Hostess Club extends hospitality to all visitors at school functions. The members serve to guide parents during Back-to-School Night each Fall. They also assist at drama and musical functions as well as graduation. 69 German Club The German Club, under the di- rection of Frau Barbara Cough- lan. meets and holds activities to increase their knowledge of Ger- man culture. The Club makes and sells German Pumpkin Bread each Fall. They also sell German advent Calendars to earn money for a scholarship to be awarded to an outstanding senior majoring in German. German Honor Society The German Honor Society is a very select group of students who main- tain a 3.6 grade point average in Ger- man for three consecutive years. Forensics The Forensics Club competes against other high schools in debating and speak- ing tournaments. They are the articulate and outspoken members of our student body. (L. This year the magazine is headed up by editor Cindy Doucette. 71 Spanish Honor Society Under Senor Ruiz’s guiding advice, the Spanish Honor Society was formed to fur- ther foster the interests in Spanish cul- ture and activities. The club members, as their name suggests, are honor students in the Spanish language. Spanish Club Guided by the wisdom of Senor Ruiz, the Spanish Club brings together many of the school’s Spanish students and involves them in many language and cultural en- riching activities. Concert Choir The growing choir of almost 45 members has had an extremely busy year. Directed by Mr. Dave Bishop, the choir performed at the Christmas concert, Pop Concert, and Spring concert. 72 1986-1987 Photo Club Members of the Photo Club can often be found with their cameras recording school activities. In addition to experi- menting with advanced and creative photographic techniques, these dedi- cated students are responsible for devel- oping film and printing pictures of school events for newspaper press releases, for Varisty Club and Student Council, and occasionally for the yearbook. Their ma- jor fundraising activity is the sale of pho- tos of the performers in school produc- tions. Musical dramas permit cast members to hone their singing, acting and danc- ing skills as well as meet and make new friends. 78 Jazz Rock This is one of the more enjoyable and rewarding musical activities at the school. Members devote their time and effort to perfecting their skills in a very difficult area of mu- sic. Commendations are deserved by all who participate in Jazz Rock and without whose dedication Jazz Rock would not survive in the school. Varsity Club This year’s club was directed by Mr. Bob Sawyer and was more active than in the past. The club consisted of those students who have earned a varsity letter and are interested in contributing to school spirit. The club holds monthly dinners at the Sawyers’, directs a pep rallly, and helps organize some of the spirit week activities. 79 Marching Band Once again, the K.H.S. Colts Marching Band had a successful and memorable year. Under the leadership of drum major Keith Hodgson, the Band placed third at the Eastern Invitational Championship. Other awards this year included Best Drum Major and Second Place Band Front at the Roxbury Competition. Our own festival was an outstand- ing success, thirteen Bands came to compete. Spirit Week King Anthony Martino and Queen Betsy Corcoran Preparing for float competition The reigning homecoming King and Queen kicked off Spirit Week this year. For the first time, the King and Queen reigned for a week instead of just the traditional day. Also for the first time this year, the winner, class of ’88, of the Spirit Week competitions was given a trophy to cherish for the year. This year’s homecoming theme was Halloween, with all the classes dress- ing in outlandish costumes. - Waiting for the final results PAVAS The Performing and Vi- sual Arts Society, is a nationally affiliated or- ganization for those stu- dents who excel in the creative arts, music, drama, and literature. Under the guidance of Ms. Peggy Pallas, the club was involved with many activities, which included seeing a Broadway show in New York City. Members find PAVAS a creative outlet for their various talents. Student Council The Student Council enjoyed one of the most successful years in re- cent memory. The addi- tion of the new “Student Store” quickly started the year as a major suc- cess. New touches were also added to Home- coming and the Spirit Week competition to make these events even more exciting than in the past. Kinnelon’s leadership in the Colo- nial Hills Conference was highlighted when Stephen Kotsen and David Daniels were elected Pres, and V.P. of the C.H.C. Student Councils. The council also started planning for next year’s 25th an- niversary, held a Free- Fare concert, and spon- sored a few successful dances. They used this year to rebuild their team after the loss of many seniors last year. With many talented underclassmen the lady Colts hope to do well next year. Only six boys were available for the competition at the various weight classes, and this created too many forfeits for an overall winning record. On the positive side, however, Jared Kareivis earned honors for the squad by grappling his way to becoming a sectional champion in his weight division before finally being eliminated in the regional tournament. Holding up the honor of K.H.S. on the wrestling mat were co-captains Marc Mongeluzzo and Jared Kareivis, along with Luis Francisco, Tim Yildiz, Bruce Davies, and Jay Gleeson.
