COMPETITION CHEERING New this year, the Competition Cheer- ing Team competed in several contests throughout the state, executing two pre- cise cheers, and also a dynamic dance routine choreographed by Denise Nei- bisch. Under the guidance of longtime cheerleaders Amy Domino and Sue Pisa- no, the girls practiced many hours to per- fect their cheers. PAVAS The Performing and Visual Arts Society is working under the direction of Mr. Dennis Witt, meeting throughout the year to discuss the soci- ety’s activities. Members are first nominated by teachers of Creative Arts, Music, or English, and then decide whether or not to accept the nomi- nation. These students offer an in- valuable service both to their fellow stu- dents and to the library staff by perform- ing such functions as circulation, filing, and shelving books and magazines. The members are responsible for the effi- cient delivery, organization, and operation of the equipment used in classrooms, the library, sports events, and special school assemblies. HOSTESS CLUB Under the guidance of Mrs. Marilyn Pet- tersen, the Hostess Club extends hospitality to all visitors at KHS. The members serve as usherettes for Back-To-School Night, drama productions, musical concerts, and graduation. A very efficient service organi- zation, the Hostess Club is greatly appreci- ated not only by KHS, but also by the citi- zens of Kinnelon and Riverdale. GERMAN CLUB The German Club is a group of stu- dents who, under the direction of Frau Barbara Coughlan, attend meet- ings and activities to further their knowledge about the culture of Ger- many. The Club makes and sells pumpkin bread, sells German advent calendars and candy, and holds other fund raisers to earn money for a scholarship to be awarded to an out- standing senior. The purpose of the National Honor Society is to create enthu- siasm for scholarship, to stimu- late a desire to render service, to promote leadership, and to devel- op character in the students of KHS. The chapter provides tutor- ing, procures and delivers The New York Times throughout the school, provides a Trick-or-Treat escort service, serves as Honor Guard at graduation, holds an alumni tea, and this year provided pajamas for the less fortunate el- derly living in the metropolitan area. Selection for membership is based on outstanding scholarship, character, leadership, and ser- vice. Varsity Club Has Active Year This year’s Varsity Club, direct- ed by Mr. Bob Sawyer, has been more active than in past years. The club consists of those stu- dents who have earned a varsity letter and are interested in con- tributing to the school spirit at KHS. The club held monthly din- ners at the Sawyer’s, directed a pep rally, and organized some of the activities during Spirit Week. Many activities made up the ’85-’86 school year: the blood drives. Homecoming Weekend: many committees, striving to develop KHS into a better place to receive an education were formed. The band earned several first and second place trophies throughout the season and hosted its fifth annual band competition at KHS. Drum Major Stephen Chin was undefeated as best drum major in Division II, amassing six first place trophies. Other student leadership included: Kerri Warburton, and Sheri Davis as color guard captains, Geoffrey Zoeller and Keith Hodgson, band managers, and the 1985-86 band council, Mickey Cro- mie, Suzanne Gareau, Gina Gareau, and Geoffrey Zoeller. The staff was led by marching band director Mr. James Miller, who was assisted by Mr. Dave Bishop. Mr. Ralph Venezia was the colorguard advisor and Mr. Mike Russo was the marching coordinator; percussion assistance was provided by Mr. Steve Coombs. Music Honor Society The KHS Music Honor So- ciety is composed of those musicians who have achieved membership in Area, Region, All-State, and All-Eastern bands and or choruses. Additional mem- bership in the Society is made up of those seniors judged as possessing out- standing ability and commit- ment. Brass Ensemble Kinnelon’s six person brass “quintet” provides the opportunity for qualified stu- dents to pursue advances musical performance. The group performs at concerts, directed by Mr. Carl Wil- hejlm, and in altered form travels throughout the dis- trict during the Christmas holiday season. 48 Concert Choir The growing choir of al- most 45 members had a busy year. Under the leadership of Mr. Lagattuta they per- formed at the Christmas concert. Spring recital, and graduation. With the assis- tence of President Betsy Christakos, Vice President Lori Boggess, Secretary Lin- da Barnes, Mr. Lagattuta also put together a fun- draiser for the purpose of the choir trip. Jazz Rock “Jazz is impossible: once you realize this it’s a piece of cake.” With this in mind the KHS jazz band undertakes a challenging program of mu- sic under the direction of Mr. James Miller. In their first contest ever the band fin- ished third at the Harrison Jazz Festival, competitive among veteran ensembles. In the future, the group hopes to expand horizons of the Kin- nelon music scene with addi- tional festivals and concerts. 49 The Music Man Concert Band Strengthening its reputation as an outstanding band, the Kinnelon High School Concert Band has conducted itself respectably in concert this year. Captain Celene Castellucci 53 Football 1985: a winning season Under the direction of Coach Len Smith, the 1985 Colt Football Team captured its first winning season since 1981. Captain Glenn Ferrara along with senior stan- douts Dave Russinko, Chris Hince, Marty Cooper, Brad MacKenn, Dave Gigante, and Rich Osterhoudt, led the team to a 6-3 overall record. The highlight of the season, a 9-7 win over Bay- ley Ellard, put the Colts over .500 for good. Go!!!! 57 Girls’ Soccer: a tough, profitable year Under the leadership of captains Nicki Vosshall and Kelly Annunziata and coach Frank Scarpetta, the 1985 Girls’soccer team worked hard to make an impression in the Colonial Hills Conference. They used this year to become familiar with the stiff com- petition and rebuild the strength of the team. Sopho- mores Kerilyn Edwards, Lissa Schaup, and Sheri Burichian gained valuable experience, having high hopes for next year. Junior Jill Kelly had an out- standing season leading the team in scoring. Beth Bartlett, a junior goalie, steadily improved as the season progressed. The team’s record of 2-17 does not show its true ability, losing many games by close scores. Their overall record of 24-5 replaced last year’s as the best in the school’s history. Senior stars Jenni- fer Adams and Sandy Smith handled most of the distance load, while co-captains Heidi Huber and Doreen Molnar carried the field events. Sprinters Linda Salese and Gina Bolte also had a fine season. as well as middle distance runners Lynn Kirchoff and Lauren Derstine. Baseball With the expertise of Coach Gerry Sullivan, the 1985-86 Baseball Team had a very productive sea- son. Seniors Dave Russinko and Ed Hambor han- dled the mound duties, while junior standout Dave Sawyer filled the catching responsibilities. Softball The Girls’ Softball Team adjusted easily to the leadership of Rookie Coach Louis Whritenour. Proving to be a tough competitor in the Colonial Hills Conference, the team was led by Senior pitch- er Kelly Walsh and first baseman Sue Generelli, All Conference Selections last year. Alina DeGroff, Lynn Sevcik, and Gail Hamdan comprised the nu- cleus of talent on the team. Despite the loss of four Seniors, the prospects for next year look promis- ing. Lacrosse: A Strong, Competitive Year Under the guidance of the witty, knowledgeable Coach Bob Turco, the 1985-86 Lacrosse Team en- joyed a great season. Led by captains Dave Gi- gante, Steve Cooper, Harry Ko, and Kevin Grainger, the boys thrived on the tough competi- tion in the Garden State B League. Talented under- classmen included Rob Rosenquist, Jay Gleeson, Todd Kimjohn and goalie Ken Kane. With an open- ing day victory over Peddie, the Colts got off to a great start, and dominated their opponents throughout the season. The Colt Defense. 83 Boys’ Tennis The 1985-86 Boys’ Tennis Team enjoyed another productive season under the direction of Coach Lura Mountford. Juniors Steve Lee and Rob Caren handled first and second singles while Seniors Jim Hendy, Matt Hook, Craig Marsden and Scott Cogh- lan carried the doubles positions. Frosh wonder Ken Colabella turned in many big wins and gained valuable experience at third singles. Seniors Chris Hince (co-capt.). Rich Dor- sett, Marty Cooper, Tim Luing, Todd Hamilton, and Bill O’Hea contributed greatly to a mostly young team. The Field Team pulled together and contributed to the over-all team performance. Co-captains Tim Mure and Greg Cuozzo consistently turned in fine results.
