President Danalyn Germanton, Vice-President Christo- pher DeFrancis, Secretary Dave Gustavsen, Treasurer Kevin Stiroh, and Advisor Mr. Balchunas have led the student body in sponsoring a number of activities. The Blood Bank, which was a huge success. Homecoming, Pep rallies, dances. (Missing: Dan Mollod) NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY (Above) The purpose of the National Honor Society is to create enthu- siasm for scholarship, to stimulate a desire to render service, to promote leadership, and to develop character in the students of Kinnelon High School. The chapter provides short term tutoring for students having difficulty in academic areas; procures and delivers the New York Times for students and faculty; provides chaperone ser- vice for community children on Halloween; serves as Honor Guard for graduation and attempts to meet special needs of the school community where and when possible. In addition to in-school activities, the chapter has at various times met service needs in the community and surrounding area. An example of this service is the purchase and decoration of a new Christmas tree for the children’s ward at Chilton Hospital and carolling at Riverside Hospital in recent years. Selection for membership is based on outstanding scholar- ship, character, leadership, and service. 84 SPANISH HONOR SOCIETY The Spanish Honor Society, under the guidance of Senor Ruiz, is a select group of students who have earned six successive A’s or B’s. The society has had a candy sale to raise funds for year- ly scholarships, silver and bronze med- als. The society had their annual induc- tion dinner inviting new members into the club during the year. They are plan- ning a trip to see a Spanish play and lunch in a Spanish restaurant. FRENCH HONOR SOCIETY The French Honor society consists of a group of talented French Students in fourth or fifth year French who have consistently gotten A’s or B’s. FRENCH CLUB The French Club is a group of stu- dents who are interested in learning more about the French culture. Mr. Townsley (advisor) has been running this club for many years, this being his last, and we all wish him the best of luck in the future. 85 GERMAN HONOR SOCIETY The German Honor Society, headed by Frau Coughlan, is a select group of students who maintain a 3.6 average for three years of German. MARCHING BAND The Kinnelon High School Marching Band, di- rected by Mr. Rick Summers and Mr. Jim Miller had a very successful season this year. Led by Dawn Romaine, the band played during half-time at the football games and placed well in many competitions. 90 CONCERT BAND The Concert Band, under the di- rection of Mr. Rick Summers, Mr. Jim Miller, and supervised by Mr. Carl Wilhejelm had successful winter and spring concerts, in which they had worked very hard for. The band had many fund-raisers and is plan- ning a trip to Canada in the spring. The officers are: President Peter Atwell, Vice-President Steve Chin, Secretary Dawn Romaine, and Trea- surer Melissa Chin. CHOIR This year’s choir had a very ex- citing year. Mrs. Janowicz re- signed in the beginning of the year after a not so successful Christ- mas concert. PEER COUNSELING The Peer Counseling group is fairly new to our school. It involves a group of students who are interested in helping their peers. The group also has a Con- tact-A-Buddy system (CAB) involved with their activities. The group has been very successful and hopes to get even more members to join in future years. CIE The C.I.E. program allows stu- dents to spend half the day in school and the rest of the day at their jobs. 102 SKI CLUB The Ski Club is an after school re- creational activity. SPORTS!” 113 GIRLS SOCCER The Lady Colts, despite an enthusiastic approach and the leadership of co-captains Lora Giancola and Karen Richardson encountered difficulty this season as they were only able to chalk up three victories. Coach Scarpetta and the returning players are optimistically looking forward to next season when they hope to be better prepared for the stiff competition that accompanies playing an indepen- dent schedule. The Colts entered a tough conference, led by captains Kevin Stiroh and Chris DeFrancis, they finished with a 6-11-1 record. Many of the losses were by a single goal which proved the Colts to be very competitive. Karen Johnson, for the third year in a row, won the County Tournament. Also, Karen Johnson and Sharon Smith were honored with ALL-STATE selection. The team also tied for 2nd place at the county championship. The girls and boys team finished third in the league with records of 10- 5 and 7-7 respectively. The relay team, consisting of Davies. Sebens. Kelly Annunziata and frosh Kiera Cruz, broke the school record by three seconds. Senior Brian Cuozzo led the boys squad, along with Steve Diani and Mike Onufrow. Senior Bran Cuozzo rakes a breather SKIING Despite their record, a surprising amount of students joined this year’s ski team. This year served as a learning period for the underclassmen. Seniors Steve Seeger and Rich Marino formed the nucleus of the team, while juniors Matt Hook and Tom Bogan, and Sophomore Anthony Martino hope to lead a young team next year. Also, this year marked the first time Kinneion had a Girls Ski Team. Juniors Michelle Prol. who made second team All-Conference. Heather Metzler and Veronica Hursh led lthe Colts to an impressive first season. The 1984- 5 Ski Team A ho of Kinneion Skier Freshman Billy Hook 177 GIRLS’ BASKETBALL The 1984-85 Girls’ Basketball team completed their season with a 19-6 record, the best record in the schools’ history. They finished in second place in the Colonial Hills Conference with a 14-4 record. One of the highlights of the season was winning the Kinnelon Christmas Tournament with victories over Vernon and Mahwah. Shelley Raquet was named the tournaments’ MVP and Maureen Mellina was sleeted to the All-Tournament team. In the State Tournament the Colts upset number one seeded Roselle Park, but lost a tough game to New Providence in the Section finals. The Lady Colts celebrate a big victory. Coach Sargeant looks on at a practice. 129 BOYS’ BASKETBALL Under the direction of rookie head coach Ke- vin Hurt, the 84-85 boy’s basketball team strug- gled thorugh a rough season. Although they dropped many close games, the Colts finished with a winning record of 13-11. The team’s nu- cleus consisted of five seniors: Shane Dowling, Scot O’Conner, Kevin Stiroh, Dick Penola, and Kevin Kelly. While Juniors Bill O’Hea and Marty Cooper played vital roles in the line ups. Coach McGarrity’s squad fought all year, including putting a six match winning streak together. The Colts quali- fied for the state tournament for the first time in many years. Veteran pitchers Norma Bertsch and Kelly Walsh will start for the Colts and provide depth at the plate. Sue Generelli, Alina DeGroff and Carolyn Davies will provide powerhouse hitting as well as experienced play at their respective positions. Newcomers Gail Hamdan, Maureen Galligan, Kim Brozena and Linda Lukash will see plenty of playing time and will also be expected to make a showing. The field events are very strong; Lucy Cox is predicted to have a great season as well as Noelle Schmidt, Doreen Molnar, Raquel Schuttler and newcomers Keira Cruz and Heidi Huber.
