MARCHING BAND The Kinnelon High School Marching Band, led by Drum Majorette Nancy Kerwin and Drum Major John Christa- kos and directed by Mr. Rick Summers and Mr. Eric Wilhjelm, provided excel- lent halftime performances at football games. Led by co-captains, Laura McLean and Caroline Thramann, they fin- ished the season with a very respectable record of 8-9-1. Shelly Raquet and Noelle Schmidt gave Coach Scarpetta’s team tremendous de- fensive depth and kept goals scored against them to a minimum. Once again they earned the title of Sectional champs, placing an incredible first, second, third, fourth, and eighth in that meet. All Conference selections, Karen Johnson, Michelle Adam, Diane Eggers, and Sharon Smith, led the team to an enviable 20-5 record. The young team struggled because of number problems, with only four seniors and 24 team members. Frank Kotsen had a superb season, setting a school record of 163 tackles and making first team All Conference. The team is looking forward to playing in a new conference next year. The girls team had outstanding individ- ual performances by Juniors Carolyn Davies and Kathy Raber. The boy’s team, led by Brian Cuozzo, Steve Diani, Mike Onufrow, and Captain Phil DeSilva, had a record of 4-8. Losing only one member to graduation and gaining a years experience, the team expects a much stronger sea- son next year. Both Harold and Len went to the Regional tournament. The Colts look foreward to a good season next year with the return of many varsity wrestlers. CHEERING This year’s cheering squad, under the direction of Miss Kastner, did a great job of enthusiastically supporting both the boys’ and the girls’ basketball teams. Under the driection of Coach Sargeant they defeated rival teams De- Paul, Pequannock, and Morris Catholic for the first time. The girls’ finished with a conference record of 11-3, losing the Conference Championship to Mor- ris Catholic in a close two point game. The team also won their first State tournament games, advancing to the third round. Senior Terese Joseph, an All Conference First team selection, became the first Kinnelon girl to score 1,000 points. Coach Sargeant (who was named Coach of the year) will be back next year to lead the girls through another exciting season. The Colts finished third in the Northern Hills Conference with a 12-4 record and were rated 1 Oth in Morris County with an overall record of 13 wins and 8 losses. The team was led by senior captain Bernie Stiroh who averaged 25 points per game and was selected to the first team All Conference, first team All County, and Group I All State. Also contributing to the fine season were Scot O’Conner, who was selected to the third team All Conference, Kevin Stiroh, Clay Bran- ford, Shane Dowling, Dick Penola, Chris Kotsen, Ja- mie Strain and Brian Davis. Both the Junior Varsity, under the direction of Coach Hurt, and the Freshmen, coached by Coach Turco, had winning seasons. The team is expecting another suc- cessful year in 1984-85. Though the teams’ record was not as good as usual, many individuals did well. Junior, Steve Seegar, skied for the first time in New Jersey competition and did a great job. He raced to fourth place in the Butler Invitational. Senior captain, Leslie Heiser is ranked among the best skiers in the state and was chosen to the All-New Jersey ski team. Leslie captured first place at the Sparta Invitational, placed 15th at the USSA Eastern Champion- ships and was number one for the New Jersey girls’ ski team. The team gained a year of valuable experience and hopes that the nucleus of returning letterman and an influx of new skiers will help them to a better season next winter. Sophomores Lynn Sevik, Shelly Raquet, Gail Correlli, and Sue Generelli, as well as juniors Moni- ca Furtak and Carolyn Davies should prove to be important factors in the upcoming season. The only two seniors on the squad, Lorraine Bernascone and Wendy Russinko, in the opinion of Coach Smith, will play a vital role for this young team. Return- ning seniors Joe Saccomanno, Bob Gigante, and Jamie Strain are captains. Other veteran senior players are Joe Napolatano, Jeff Nielson, Jeff Mahadeen, Chris Orland, and Mike Davies. This spring season has been seriously limited by the weather. The team had planned three double headers on Saturdays as a part of their pre-season “Florida tour” in South Jersey. Only one of these days was completed. During this pre-season, the younger ball players, including Mike Snell, Dave Pagella, Ed Hambor, Tony Cassillo, Steve Schaper, and Greg Nunez, have worked to help improve the club’s perfor- mance. The team hopes to improve their record of 1983 and looks for the younger ball players to continue to help achieve the overall goals of the baseball program at KHS.
