Under the enthusiastic guidance of Mrs. Squier, the organization was able to com- plete many fundraising projects. An in- teresting Freshman welcoming added to the year’s services while numerous dances, the sale of soda and candy, the smooth operation of the refreshment stand and school elections. Homecom- ing, school beautification, the 5th annu- al Bloodbank, and the support of the Christian Children’s Fund were all made possible by a hard-working council. Out- standing contributions came from: Mi- chelle Leclerc, Jean Polomski, Sandy Bykowicz, Peg Rento, Ruth Dowden, Kim Hammond, Katie Corcoran, Laura Bohn, Mike Milano, Jeff Raquet, and Wilton Woods. Clockwise from the top: The officers conducting a monthly meeting. “We write our own destiny... we become what we do. —Madame Chiang Kai-shek Treasurer, Leslie Vosshall; Secretary, Janine Hummel; Vice-President. SPIRIT WEEK Spirit Week, once again successfully sponsored by the Student Council, was highlighted by some hearty competition between classes as well as some unexpected upsets. Competing in six cate- gories — costume, hall decor, class chain, pep rally wall, pep rally spirit, and class float — the juniors took the lead early in the week only to be ousted by the seniors in the final float competi- tion. Nevertheless, all classes were winners in the costume contest: Freshmen — punk and western days. Sophomores — dress-up and occupation days, Juniors — food and garbage bag days, Sen- iors — backwards and baby days concluding with a day of Blue, Gold, White, and Green. Leslie Mills flashes a prize-winning smile. The green-tinted Roman Liz Joseph awaits the victory of her Senior Spirit chain. What one doesn’t realize in ordinary mental health is that daily life is a show. You have to put on a right costume, to improvise right speeches, to do right ac- tions, and all this isn’t automatic, it takes concentration and work and a simply amazing degree of control. —Herman Wouk Clockwise from below: Look out Rockets! Sandy Bykowicz, Debbie Yarnall, Liz Joseph, Pam Domon- kos, Terri Hunt. All people smile in the same language. Laura Weiss Seductively sassy. Chris Colabella and Beth Schwarts. Hey babe! Injuries were a major factor in preventing the team’s true ability in conference competition. The girls got back in stride to finish second in the Sectionals and to send a promising bunch of runners to compete in the State Tournament. This year’s boys team had a decidedly worse season. They were plagued by injuries, and by the end of the season, only three runners remained. Art Hoffmann, Steve Henry, and Ed Rae valiantly finished the dismal 0-18 season. However, Art Hoffmann exhibited his running talent by finishing fourth in the State Sectionals. Both girls and boys teams were coached by Mr. Steve Lurie. 55 BOYS SOCCER The season progressed roughly for the Colts until Coach Townsley made some critical changes on the field with less than half the season remaining. Moving Bob Gigante into the nets proved successful, as the Colts went on to win five of their last six games with him in goal. The team ob- viously had much strength up the middle as two center field players, Eric Pfeifer and Brian Rakowski, were recognized by All-Conference selections. 56 r in GIRLS SOCCER After gaining valuable experience play- ing in Germany against the best in Europe last spring, the team returned to action against their old rivals. Under the coaching of Mr. Scarpetta, the girls had a great year, running up a record of 15-8. All-Conference first team selections, captains Tammy Schmidt and Debbie Diaco were given much support by a very strong Colt team. 58 CD in FOOTBALL The first season in the Northern Hills Conference proved to be a tough one for the Colts. There were, however, many close and exciting games. The fact that the Colts lost their last five games by a to- tal of 19 points showed this. There was much talent on our gridiron this year, as Greg Sauter, Scott Fer- rara, Kevin Woop, Doug Burnett, and Frank Kotsen were All-Conference selections. 60 61 FOOTBALL CHEERLEADERS Under the direction of Miss Kastner and the leadership of seniors Deri Samuelson, Terri Hunt, Gigi Kent, Michelle Leclerc, and Leslie Mills, the cheering squad gave plenty of support to our football team this past season. 62 GIRLS TENNIS Under the new coaching of Mr. Karre, this year’s girls tennis team was very successful, compiling an 18-3 record while capturing the Northern Hills Conference title. Cap- tains Monica Witt and Diane Eggers led the team to an exciting season and Karen Magee, along with Karen John- son, added plenty of thrills in their singles positions. 63 64 SKI TEAM This year’s ski team had a consistently upbeat season, finish- ing with a cool 14-4 record. Eric Unger emerged for the second consecutive year as New Jersey state champion. Other varsity skiiers were seniors Tom Norton and Jim Kelly, who ranked in N.J.’s top twenty, juniors Gary Reading, Bob Gigante, Leslie Heiser, Tim O’Toole, and Ken Schmidt, sophomore Rich Mar- ino, and frosh wonder Matt Hook. The team placed 5th in the State Competition and 4th in the prestigious Sparta Invita- tional. Our heartiest congratuations go to graduating champ, Eric Unger! 65 BOYS’ BASKETBALL Led by the high scoring trio of Seamus Dowling, Alex Jankovitch and Bernie Stiroh, the Colts had an outstanding season, posting a record of 21-4. A strong offense, with Bernie scoring from long range and Seamus and Alex cleaning up under the boards, helped the Colts to a winning streak of 12 straight games at the beginning of the season. Sophomores Kevin Stiroh and Scott O’Connor shouldered most of the guard duty, with Ralph Aquaro playing a well-rounded backup position. The Colts are sure to be well-honored when selections are made for All-Conference and Area teams. GREAT SEASON COLTS! 66 67 GIRLS’ BASKETBALL The girls basketball team had its first winning season in a number of years. A strong offensive output by Terese Joseph, who averaged 18 points a game, sparked the Colts to a 9-8 record. Seniors Laura Weiss, Maura McGovern, and Tammy Schmidt and freshman Maureen Melina rounded out the starting team. 68 69 WRESTLING The wrestling team had a successful season with the help of underclassmen, who wrestled at about half the weight classes. Captains Scott Ferrara and Kevin Woop led the team to a 5-7-1 record while each having exceptional seasons. Both placed second in the District competition and wrestled in the Regional Tournament. The Colts are looking to improve their overall record next year with the help of the present underclassmen. 70 71 SWIMMING This year’s swim team had a good season which included some team victories and a few personal bests and team records as well. Rob Aitelli and Caroline Davies had exceptional years and were backed up with consistent swimming from the other Colts. 72 BOWLING The bowling team had a very successful season this year, captur- ing second place in both the Butler Scholastic League and in the Con- ference. Excellent seasons were turned in by Chris Storms, Doug Diggles, Sande Schlesinger, and Joe Saccomanno. As the team will be losing only one senior, the bowl- ers are looking forward to another great season next winter (and a much more complete yearbook page next year). SPRING SPORTS 74 BOYS TENNIS The Colts are looking forward to a good season this spring. Strong first and second singles players, John Milbank and captain Jim Kelly, should provide the team with many early leads. If the doubles teams come through to win a few matches, the Colts are sure of many victories. The team will be counting on the many young players to help fill in at these positions. 75 BASEBALL The Colts will be playing under the coaching of Mr. Sullivan this year. The team will look for a good season behind five returning lettermen. Strong pitching is ex- pected from Ralph Aequaro, Bob Lombardo, and Chris Orland, while a well-orchestrated defense, including seniors Fred Reidenbach and Scott Ferrara and juniors Joe Saccomanno and Bob Gigante, back them up. 76 SOFTBALL The Colts are planning on having a fine season this spring. The team will be fielding four experienced varsity seniors: Tammy Schmidt, Patty Gardiner, Denise Smith, and Lynn Rafer, as well as junior Teresa Joseph. Two new freshman pitch- ing recruits, Norma Bertsch and Kelly Walsh, should help the team to an outstanding year from the mound. Just as the team hopes, it should be a good season. 77 GIRLS TRACK The girls track team will benefit from the many talented under- classmen who are participating. Seniors Laura Weiss, Monica Witt, and Joe Nawrocki, juniors Lynda Schmidt, Katie Corcoran, and Brenda Molnar, and sophomore April Fry are all anticipating fine seasons. 78 BOYS TRACK The track Colts look to kick up plenty of turf this spring. Although young, the team shows much potential. Senior Rob Hakin will lead the team in a number of running events with support from junior Joe Paddock and company. Juniors John Penola and Frank Kotsen will heft a few weight and throwing events for the team. The Colts are expecting to gain much experience while building for the future. 79 LACROSSE After a successful first season last year, the Colts return to action with hopes of fielding another excellent team this spring. Senior captains Greg Sauter, Brian Rakowsky, and Bob Fitzgerald will lead the team. The Colts will be counting on the many returning players such as Eric Barrett and Tom Downes, as well as the captains, to fulfill the team’s high expectations. FRESHMEN T.
