The Principal’s Message “We will have these moments to remember”. As the title of this old song suggests, our high school ex- perience, when viewed in retrospect, provides a ready framework for healthy nostalgia. We may pick and choose from our experiences to suit our whim, dwelling on the pleasant and ignoring the rest. We certainly cherish our vic- tories, but may God grant us the wisdom to be thankful for our defeats, for without them, we wouldnot have learned so well. The athletic vibrations, the intellectual pulsations — ela- tion and frustration combined in time; from the Senior Brunch to the last football crunch. My thoughts commence to crystallize and the four-year collage of the Class of ’79 comes into happy and exciting focus. It is difficult to ascribe individual abstractions such as warmth, understanding and respect to a group, but to the extent that language permits this communication, these characteristics were the foundation of our relationship over the past four years. We worked and we grew — together. We played together. We laughted together. We shared sorrow, and we prayed together. Everything that could be done for you was done for you; of this 1 am certain. We cared about each other. The friendships that we made are indelibly etched in our minds and hearts. This, in my view, is the essence of life and certainly the purpose of education. These past years helped us to learn about ourselves and, therefore, to better understand ourselves. Keep up the process. Continue to discover who you are and what you are really all about. No one can do this for you. Let the law of inertia prevail; remain in motion. Consciously seek out your place in the uni- verse. This is a lifelong pursuit. Thehappy person is most often the one who understands and ac- cepts himself and his relationship to others. For you, there is uniqueness, a special distinction, for you are, in all of time, the only Class of 1979. As you stand as a body on the football field, as your earlier years flood back, as you dream of what is yet to come, you will sense the sentimental finality of that moment together, yet the driving anticipation of what is still to be. I can only hope that each of you feels powerfully that priceless at- tachment to Kinnelon High School, to Alma Mater, and that each of you feels intensely, as the years gallop on, what Thomas Moore, the Irish poet, wrote in “The Light of Other Days”: “When I remember all The friends so linked together” For me, there is a brilliant anthology of scintillating experiences and very cherished memories. I hope that your self image equals that which I hold of each and every one of you. I would like to thank you, the Class of ’79, for allowing me to share in your life. I pray that my faith in you and my love for you will reserve a very special place in your memory. “Work as though everything depends on you, and pray as though everything depends on God”.
