Text from Pages 1 - 176 of the 1979 volume:

The Principal’s Message “We will have these moments to remember”. As the title of this old song suggests, our high school ex- perience, when viewed in retrospect, provides a ready framework for healthy nostalgia. We may pick and choose from our experiences to suit our whim, dwelling on the pleasant and ignoring the rest. We certainly cherish our vic- tories, but may God grant us the wisdom to be thankful for our defeats, for without them, we wouldnot have learned so well. The athletic vibrations, the intellectual pulsations — ela- tion and frustration combined in time; from the Senior Brunch to the last football crunch. My thoughts commence to crystallize and the four-year collage of the Class of ’79 comes into happy and exciting focus. It is difficult to ascribe individual abstractions such as warmth, understanding and respect to a group, but to the extent that language permits this communication, these characteristics were the foundation of our relationship over the past four years. We worked and we grew — together. We played together. We laughted together. We shared sorrow, and we prayed together. Everything that could be done for you was done for you; of this 1 am certain. We cared about each other. The friendships that we made are indelibly etched in our minds and hearts. This, in my view, is the essence of life and certainly the purpose of education. These past years helped us to learn about ourselves and, therefore, to better understand ourselves. Keep up the process. Continue to discover who you are and what you are really all about. No one can do this for you. Let the law of inertia prevail; remain in motion. Consciously seek out your place in the uni- verse. This is a lifelong pursuit. Thehappy person is most often the one who understands and ac- cepts himself and his relationship to others. For you, there is uniqueness, a special distinction, for you are, in all of time, the only Class of 1979. As you stand as a body on the football field, as your earlier years flood back, as you dream of what is yet to come, you will sense the sentimental finality of that moment together, yet the driving anticipation of what is still to be. I can only hope that each of you feels powerfully that priceless at- tachment to Kinnelon High School, to Alma Mater, and that each of you feels intensely, as the years gallop on, what Thomas Moore, the Irish poet, wrote in “The Light of Other Days”: “When I remember all The friends so linked together” For me, there is a brilliant anthology of scintillating experiences and very cherished memories. I hope that your self image equals that which I hold of each and every one of you. I would like to thank you, the Class of ’79, for allowing me to share in your life. I pray that my faith in you and my love for you will reserve a very special place in your memory. “Work as though everything depends on you, and pray as though everything depends on God”. Principal — Friend Francis M. Finnerty u Kinnelon High School Kinnelon, New Jersey 1979 Volume 15 History of the Class of 1979 In September, 1975, our class entered Kinnelon High School full of anticipation. We were freshmen, yes, but we were in high school. It didn’t take long before we knew the building, the teachers, and Yogi and Boo-Boo. We were a part of it all. Under the leadership of our class of- ficers we earned over $2000 with the orange and grapefruit sale. We formed our freshman football and basketball teams, and added members to all the other athletic teams, clubs and activities. We were well represented in the Spanish Honor Society induction, the first in this high school. For the spring carnival we constructed the unforgettable spook house in the girls’ locker room — it’s never been the same since! In 1976 we returned to KHS as sophomores. We added to our treasury with another orange and grapefruit sale. Our float was Uncle Sam, and the hard work we put into him paid off. Our athletes became varsity and junior varsity members on all teams and composed a greater part of them than before. Many of our class were included in the inductions of the National Honor Society and PAVAS this year. Our contribution to the spring carnival was an obstacle course, and it was very successful. Our junior year began with the arrival of our class rings, and we celebrated with a breakfast in the cafeteria. We held our final orange and grapefruit sale. We began to hold leadership positions in the many clubs and societies we were participating in for the third year; we were an integral part of all the athletic teams, many of us varsity first string players. We took the PSAT’s, and realized that very soon we would be making our post-high school plans — we would be seniors. And then we were! It really struck home as we had our senior portraits taken and embarked upon the seniors’ traditional magazine sale. We gained privileges (and some of us lost them) and the parking lot was filled with our cars — senior cars! All our senior activities, including fund-raising, dinners, the brunch, began. We were the most important athletes, and we were the captains of the teams. We were the leaders of the clubs, societies, and activities. Gradua- tion loomed near and we realized how short four years really were — but four short years we would always remember. m) Table of Contents Principal’s Message............................. After los- ing 3 of the top 7 runners to injuries, Coach Ado Boiles lead the team to it’s 7th District Championship. The team won 10 duel meets and lost 1. It placed 2nd in the Conference Meet, beaten only by Morris Catholic the favored team in the state. The team placed 1st in the Districts and 5th in the Group 1 Boy’s States. Once again, Bill Agee and Russ Barry lead the team through the season. Sophomore, Pete Columbia, held his own in the Conference and is going to be one of the team’s top runners next year. Steven Walsh and Mike Light had an excellent season after moving up to replace the injured 4 and 5 men on the team. The team’s overall record is 116 wins and 32 losses. Not only did the boy’s team have an excellent season, but the in- dividual girls also proved their ability. If they had had a 5th girl, who was needed for them to qualify as a team, they could have easily won the girl’s group 1 districts. The reason why Cross Country is such a highly competitive sport, is that you don’t only have to beat other teams, but also yourself. 1978 COLTS: Front Row (Left to Right): Nancy Schmidt, Lou Barry. Another injustice would be to make reference to this group without the men- tion of the word family. I need not explain these injustices any more than to say, “How can one speak for- mally when referring to his family?” We are a class which has bickered and fought; a class which has conquered as well as been conquered; a class that maintains a great amount of individuality, while at the same time preserves an even greater amount of unity; a class which withstood the pressures of competition enough to maintain an enormous degree of harmony; a class whose pride in itself and its individuals made it overcome any obstacle which hindered success. We are a FAMILY! That’s what makes us stand out from past graduating classes and those graduating classes to come. We know good-bye is near. But how can we say good-bye to the people we’ve grown to love? We won’t! On graduation day it is expected that the Class of 79 will reach its end as a unit. But we will do the unex- pected, because we’ve always done the unexpected. We are a legend, and legends never die. The friendships, the affections, and the love we developed cannot be forgotten. The KHS Class of 79 will live on. “We’ve only just begun!” So instead of saying good-bye, we say, “Hello!” 120 BRIAN ABATE 718 Orchard Road, Kinnelon SUSAN ABBOTT 9 Brush Hill Road, Kinnelon Choir 1, 2, 3, Vice President 4; PAVAS. 3, 4; Vocal Ensemble 2, 3 Vice President 4; Twirling 2, 3 Co-Captain 4; Track 1, 2, 3,4; Spanish Honor Society 1, 2, 3; Float Committee 1, 2, 3, 4; Art Club 2; J.V.
