Two roads diverged in a yellow wood, And sorry I could not travel both And be one traveler, long 1 stood And looked down one as far as I could To where it bent in the undergrowth; Then took the other, as just as fair. And having perhaps the better claim, Because it was grassy and wanted wear; Though as for that, the passing there Had worn them really about the same, And both that morning equally lay In leaves no step had trodden black. Oh, I kept the first for another day! Yet knowing how way leads on to way, I doubted if I should ever come back. I shall be telling this with a sigh Somewhere ages and ages hence; Two roads diverged in a wood, and I — I took the one less traveled by, And that has made all the difference. 1 FACULTY SENIORS 2 PEGASUS 76 Kinnelon High School Kinnelon, N.J. Volume 12 What strange new roles . . . lurked behind these doors for me? I was one of many . . . nine-hundred moving, mouthing, masses . . . but I felt very much alone. In the midst of the mob ... in the center of the circle . . . 6 in the crush of the crowd, I was isolated by my own fear of exclusion . . . private fears, 7 of being left out . . . Fear of involvement of not measuring up . . . nor finding my place. Fear of the unknown . . . of shadows that conceal and threaten . . my half-formed dreams. Eyes closed. I tuned in the voices around me . . . and heard familiar fears. Heart open. I studied the faces near me . . . and saw my hopes reflected. I am not alone . . in this very place. in this short span of time. we are together . . . working toward tomorrow. 12 FACULTY 13 Board of Education Top Left: Janies Dudley — President. However, many players turned in respectable individual per- formances. Senior running back Mike Veit rushed for a total of 394 yards, a team high. Junior Stan Woerner, a Skyline Conference honorable mention at defensive back, intercepted 4 passes and also returned a Pompton Lakes kick off 95 yards for a touchdown. Linebackers Bert Kane and Jim Mar- tello, and middle guard Paul White sparked the Colt defense. L-R: FIRST ROW - S. Woerner. C. Hicks. P. White, J. Dudley, B. Kane, J. Bakay, M. Kucks. S. Graham. K. The highlight of the season was a 3-2 victory over state contender Pompton Lakes. Co-captains Mark Idell and Keith Gillman led the Colt attack with 13 goals — 1 assist and 3 goals — 10 assists, respectively. The defense was bolstered by the play of goalkeeper George Jefremow and fullbacks Greg Milbank, Steve Schwab and Mick Magill. BOYS’ BASKETBALL The basketball team ended this season with an 8-13 record. The season was quite unusual. The team’s spirit was defeated by an early loss to Jefferson. Midway through the season, the team experienced a shock with the dismissal of Head Coach Brown. Luckily, Mr. Cavo from Pearl Miller School, spearheaded the Colts throughout the re- mainder of the season. The pinnacle of the season came with a close last minute 73-71 win over Pompton Lakes. The JV squad started this year off very slowly but ended up with a strong 5-13 record at the end of the season. The teams would like to thank the fans who came to support them and to give special thanks to the new coaches — Cavo, LaValette, and Zotte (freshman coach). WRESTLING The 1976 Kinnelon Colt wrestling team compiled a respectable dual meet record of 3-6, despite injuries suffered by members. In tournament competition many wrestlers turned in outstanding performances. Lou Mainiero (20-5-1) placed second in the Pe- quarnock invitational, third in the Butler Tournament, and won the Parsippany Christmas Tourney and the Districts. John De Rouville (22-3-1) was victorious in the Butler, Pequannock and District Tourna- ments. Kevin Walzak (19-6) took a second at Butler, Parsippany and in the Districts. Paul White (14-2) won the Butler Tourna- ment, and then, after sitting out the dual District Champ Paul White, meet season with a shoulder separation, placed first in both the Pequannock Tour- nament and the Districts and second in the Regionals. De Rouville was named to the All Conference first team and W'hite, Wal- zak and Mainiero were picked for the sec- ond team. For those interested in view- ing their world through the lens, the Photography Club provided insight and knowledge into the basics of photography, from the simple loading of the camera to more advanced techniques in printing. The club’s advisor, Mr. Donald Holman, exhibited great patience in working with the be- ginning photographers. Students partial to the fine arts were more likely to join the Art Club under the direction of Mr. Frank Scarpetta. Their im- mense banner, often seen sus- pended across Kinnelon Road in front of the High School, an- nounced upcoming bicentennial events. The members also showed considerable patience in stuffing small squares of red, w hite, and blue tissue paper into a wire frame to fashion a fifteen foot Old Glory for use during the Drama Club’s production of The American Dream”, and the performance of the United State’s Marine Band. Members of this year elected Lydia Lucci- ola as the club’s president. The Performing And Visual Arts Society provided an outlet for the talents of the school’s more exceptionally gifted stu- dents from the various disci- plines. The original chapter of PAVAS at Kinnelon High School was founded by one of KHS’s own guidance counse- lors, Mr. Paul DeFrancis. It has now spread to 26 active chapters in nine states from Maine to Vir- ginia, and to the territory of Puerto Rico. The Kinnelon chapter joined some other New Jersey Chapters to perform at the annual conference of Art Educators at the Morris County Museum at Morristown. Among Kinnclon’s performers was Sharon Dorram who danced a short ballet sequence exquisitely. Leslie Allen read her own poetry to an applauding audience fol- lowed by several short piano se- lections masterfully played by Diane Peepas. A different medi- um was explored in a film visual- ization of Shirley Jackson’s short story, The Lottery , pro- duced by Greg Smolin, Charly Roselius, and Bob Pcnola. In April, the Kinnelon PAVAS chapter plans to attend a semi- nar at William Paterson College in Wayne. It will include various workshops and a talent ex- change at the conclusion of the event. This year's able PAVAS officers were: president — Cathy Hoek, vice-president — Charles Penola, sccretary trcasurer — Stacey Van Alstyne, and histori- an — Leslie Onoday. The yearbook, newspaper and literary magazine involve many students working together to turn out superior efforts. Liter- ary and creative excellence is stressed in all of these extracurricular activities, and the students take pride in their work. Pegasus, masterminded by Sylvia Max- field, touches on all aspects of KHS activi- ty. representing the students and their life in school. It is a composite of literary, art, photographic and layout talent, Many were the pressured late hours to meet the deadlines with quality work. Pegasus is created not only as a high school year- book, but also as a memory. The seniors who leave Kinnclon will cherish it, and far away from the school’s crowded corridors and chalk-filled blackboards, they will leaf through its pages and reminisce. Those left behind will remember the graduate class as they move through Kinnelon High School. During the first half of the school year, the Hitching Post suffered from a general lack of understanding — between the stu- dents and the advisors, between the stu- dents and the administration, and between the students themselves. After two cir- culated issues and two recalled attempts, the Hitching Post righted itself and reor- ganized. Leslie Allen and Charles Penola combined efforts along with a large en- thusiastic staff to produce a truly fine pa- per. They hope that future classes will learn from the mistakes made this year, and that the school does not criticize too harshly, but instead looks favorably upon the many good issues. All of Kinnelon High School should be proud of Feedback, the literary-art maga- zine. Last year’s Feedback won first place in the Columbia Scholastic Press Associa- tion's 52nd annual national competition. This is a tremendous honor and a special delight to all students involved with the magazine. This year’s equally good Feed- back was the creation of co-editors Stacey VanAlstync and Leslie Allen. They stressed quality in both the art and literary material. Feedback is written, planned, designed and produced solely by the stu- dents, and it reflects their character in its originality, individuality, and variety of content and design. It is a masterpiece of student talent and creativity. Beth Sala article. proofreads a Hitching Post Activities Editor Greg Smolin. Bruce Adams, Sports Co-Editor. The Scholars Among the noteworthy students of Kinnelon High School are those mem- bers of the National Honor Society and the Chemistry League. The Honor Society is an organization which recognizes students who excel in all academic areas. Every year, qualified sophomores, juniors and seniors are in- ducted on the basis of scholarship, lead- ership, character and service. The Society is a vital organization for both the school and community. It is responsible for delivering the New York Times to KHS subscribers, provides tu- toring service in all subjects, and spon- sors a gala Alumni Tea each Christmas. However, the Honor Society, under the leadership of President Janet Ruck- er, Vice-President Lisa Stafford, Secre- tary Valerie Sands, Treasurer Paul Herzfeld, Historian Tracey Allerman, Committee Chairman Bob Hartland and Advisor Mrs. Hccney, benefits much more than the high school. Every Halloween, members volunteer to ac- company children on trick or treating outings, a service which is greatly valued. This year, the group visited a nursing home and helped to brighten the lives of many elderly people by sing- ing, playing games and performing for them. The Society is always ready and willing to help the community in any way possible. The Chemistry League is composed of students who excel in chemistry. There is a separate division for first and second year chemistry students. First year Chem League is advised by Mr. Sabatino and consists of Steven Keith, Kurt Hahn. Margaret Ahlefeldand Bob Ryan. Mr. Sharp heads the second year team: Glenn Fehr, Bill Miller, Bert Frohlich, John Griffce, Pill Henry and Ed Smolin. The League competes with teams from other high schools from northern New Jersey in monthly com- petition by taking a series of examina- tions. At the end of the year each school is ranked. Chem League is sponsored by Fairleigh Dickinson University. Another highly competitive group of students is the Chess Team. Advised by Mr. Sharp and led by Ed Mainardi, the team competes weekly with area high schools. The rest of this year's par- ticipating club members arc John Griffee, Chris Wachter, Bill Mainardi, Kevin Luing, Steve Howell, Scott Leavesley and Bob Sadler. As of this writing, the team stands undefeated, and if the outstanding playing of the first five games is any indication, the Chess Team could remain unbeaten. Vice-president Mauri Tyler presents Mrs. Heeney with an award for her NHS . . . character, definitely, but scholarship, leadership, service and knowledge? dedication to the group. 113 Among the many clubs of KHS are the service organiza- tions. which arc made up of dedicated and hard working stu- dents who perform necessary tasks. Mrs. Briggs would have quite a problem in the library if it were not for her helpers, w ho lend a hand in such thankless jobs as filing and checking out books. The Library Council works daily with both Mrs. Briggs and Mrs. Wagner to keep our book room orderly and smooth run- ning. The audio-visual aids (AVA) are responsible for the well being of the school’s televisions, record players, projectors and other such equipment. Under the supervision of Mr. Habeeb, this group takes full control of filming, video taping, recording, signing out these teaching in- strument to classrooms and keeping them all safe and usable. The Hostess Club can be seen quietly doing its job at any school function — at plays, con- certs, the Soiree and graduation. Faculty Advisors Mrs. Petterson and Mrs. Bennett direct these girls, headed this year by Presi- dent Hope Dry. Vice-President Janet Williams. Secretary Kate Finnerty and Treasurer Cindi Moor, in taking care of the school’s guests. This involves passing out programs, seating people and serving in any way possible. The largest of these service or- ganizations is the Student Coun- cil. Consisting of students of all grade levels, and led by Presi- dent Paul Giancaterino and Ad- visor Mrs. Squier. the Council performs many tasks. It operates the refreshment stand at the school sports games, sponsors the annual Spring Carnival, headed this year by Co-chair- men Charles Penola and Glenn Fehr; holds dances and helps to encourage students to become involved with school happen- ings. One of the most important aspects of the Student Council is to attempt to bridge the gap be- tween the students and the ad- ministration. This year, for the first time, the Council made a major break-through in student- administration relations, by re- ceiving an OK to place a soda vending machine in the cafeteria lobby. The Council is also con- tinuing its attempt to permit open lunch. The Student Coun- cil and the Library Council, the AVA and the Hostess Club arc valued organizations from which the entire school benefits. On Stage There arc several clubs and activities in the high school which provide the interest- ed student with a taste of the theatre. Under the inspired direction of Mrs. Joan Ludwig, the Drama Club offers one major production a year — this year, in Novem- ber, “The American Dream”, a bicentenni- al contribution, edited by Mrs. Ludwig and performed by a talented cast. The Speech Club in its first year has allowed numerous talented students to demonstrate their speaking ability through school contests, and in competition with the State and Na- tional Forensic Leagues. The Club is direct- ed by Mrs. June Bennett. Mr. Wesley Wells advises the Stage Crew, which involves it- self in the technical end of each of the major productions on stage. The lighting, sound, props — all arc attended to by the crew. The musical always is a big event in the spring. The year 1976 brought Godspell , a jubilant soft-rock musical that is still a smash in New York, to the Kinnelon stage. The music end of the show was directed by Miss Cole, from the Miller School, and the ever-involved Mrs. Ludwig was director once again. Pianists, both excellent, were Diane Woodward and Helen Stearns. Montville 121 SENIORS the class of 76 Janet Rucker — Valedictorian. “We leave behind a little bit of ourselves wherever we have been.” — Harcourt Here in Kinnelon High, each of us has left something — our personalities ingrained in the minds of teachers, records cluttering the files in guidance, scribbled words on bathroom walls, and warmth in the hearts of friends. In everyone, we have left scattered glimpses and memories of ourselves. These fragments of our lives are soon to be in our past, left in the memories of those who remain behind. Let us hope they are good memories. Our good qualities, surely, must stand out, and those that are bad, well, they are in the past and to be forgotten. Likewise, each of us will carry a bit of KHS with us wherever we go. Four of the most impressionable years of our lives have been spent within these walls, and, surely we have learned from our experiences. Think back over our time here, and, as we hope to leave behind favorable impressions, let us take with us the good memories and leave the bad to rot away in some deep recess of the mind. The future, the unknown, stretches ahead of us, beckoning us to sample, to experience, to learn and to grow. A new and marvelous existence awaits each of us, and with memories of the past tucked in our minds and hearts, let us go forward to meet it. Tara Mahoney - Senior Class Secretary Mr. Cutney - Senior Class Advisor. 124 Kathy Hoek — Senior Class Treasurer and Homecoming queen. And thus endeth four years KHS PRINCIPAL. MR. FRANK FINNERTY. SALUTES THE CLASS OF 76 Helping you to understand yourself and to understand society so that you may exist in harmony with both has been my ardent preoccupation these past years. Glory comes from daring to begin, and each of you has begun. I charge you to continue in your own fashion as though everything depends on you and pray as though everything depends on God.
