This past year we have seen a successful fusion of the old and the new. Tradition has bent to allow new customs to enter, these same customs, perpetuated, will be the enduring spirit that is Kinkaid. We hope that our class has been an important part in launching Kinkaid on its second successful fifty years. May Kinkaid always go confidently into the future, not forgetting to look back into the rich past . . . V' '7f-K'7',.r 4u', 1. fill .Jw Ja.-U -. W... LEP MP Wg, .ei . W U ' x K STUDENT C CJUNCIL To the Student Body: lt is important that we, the Kinkaid students, be grateful for our benefits, oppor- tunities, and blessings. Our world is a secure, complacent one, we have no fear of suddenly having to do without those luxuries which seem to form such an essential part of our everyday lives. We are enveloped in security, and from this aura of well-being, should capitalize on our greatest benefit-the chance to mature in the most protected and advantageous environment. Kinkaid stresses the importance of maturity because it is the intangible goal to which we must all aspire. lt- is a precious victory and therefore requires a high price- time, assiduous work, deep insight, and patience. Without this mental development, we would find ourselves lost in a complicated world, aimlessly wandering from one emotion to another. lt gives coherence to our ambitions, understanding of ourselves, and a greater chance for happiness and contentment. The beginnings of this growth toward the mature outlook is rooted in the school. As we broaden our factual knowledge, so must we add depth to our character. Our minds are pliable, and we must choose the most righteous tools to bend them. Our teachers are in part responsible, yet we, through our constant efforts, alone can de- termine the course of our future development. The flourishing of this outlook is the development of character. Character is of in- effable xfalue in our lives, it is our stature as a person. We cannot minimize its im- portance. lt will praise our good qualities and uncover our bad, it is a lucid glass through which all others will scrutinize our worthiness. lt is the most desirable quality we can wish to attain, character is the mold that shapes our lives. The school is such an integral part of our lives, its impact surely leaves a deep impression on our person. Therefore, the Kinkaid students must be cognizant of the great power they have in determining what course our school will choose, what its personal- ity and influence will be. Kincaid is not merely a campus, or new build- ings, or institution. lt is a living or- gan, and you, the students, are its blood and its vitality. You alone can elevate it, or can lower it into medi- ocrity. lts future and yours are hope- lessly bound together. You rule its mind as surely as you rule its heart. You are the breath of its life. You are Kinkaid. Perhaps iT should be, for your success as a college freshman will depend upon The accuracy of your personal map. lf yours does noT adequaTely represenT boTh your- self and The TerriTory ahead, Then you can be sure ThaT Trouble awaiTs. Seldom again will an accuraTe self-esTimaTe have more immediaTe consequence. Does iT show, for example, ThaT you characTerisTically earn lower grades on Term exams and ThaT you musT, Therefore, mainTain a comforTable margin in your daily work? Does your map reveal ThaT you have noT learned To say no when social inviTaTions conflicT wiTh aca- demic jobs or ThaT you puT off The long paper unTil The lasT minuTe? Failure To map any of These may easily mean The end of your college career. Does your map of The road ahead show college as a glamorous fun- filled Time beTween high school and a career or marriage? lf so, iT will be seriously ouT-of-sTep wiTh The maps of mosT colleges, and your academic career may be over before iT is well-sTarTed. On The oTher hand, if your map picTures college as a plan where you will be expecTed To carry a man's load, where you will noT be coddled, and where you musT geT your assignmenTs regardless of The inTerrupTions of illness or The dis- TracTions of social life, Then you are probably on The righT Track. Ca Record 'O aqdmsk OUYOBYUGYVY PSLOXNE SEASON SUMMARY Fall workout began August 19, with a small turnout, but determination seemed to offset any drawback. Two practices a day for a month, and good coaching readied the '57 Falcons for their outbreak September 21, against St. Pius. Hard preparation wasn't in vain, for the Falcons won their-first game 20-O. This important first victory put them off to a good start. The following week Kinkaid met Mt. Carmel at the Junior High School Stadium, and again the Falcons carried off the victory flag as they de- feated the Panthers 20-6. The St. Johns' Rebels collided with the team October 4, at Rebel Field. In a hard fought game St. Johns gave Kinkaid their first defeat. The final score was 6-O. Flu took its toll the next week. Approximately half of the players were sidelined with illness. This illness forced the Falcons to cancel their next game with Bryan. Rested and revengeful from their last defeat they iourneyed to St. Stephens of Austin, to hand the Spartans a 26-7 defeat. The next week they traveled to Galveston to clash with the Kirwin Gators. The victory wreath was again hung around the Falcons' neck, as they defeated the Gators 25-13. Again on the Rebel Field the Falcons met the Lutheran Buccaneers. Here they fell to defeat of a strong Lutheran team 13-O. The '57 Falcons ended their season with a record of four wins and two losses. The Annual Sports Banquet was held in their honor with award of letters and merit certificates to the individual players. This banquet completed a successfulyear.
