KINKAID GRO WS WITH HOUSTON Kinhaizfs growth and progress parallels KINKAID At the insistence of friends and neigh- bors, Mrs. Margaret Kinkaid started in her home on San Jacinto St. a small primary school with an enrollment of seven child- ren. Mrs. Kinkaid added her first teacher, Mrs. Ballinger. The school building was enlarged, and the first Field Day was held. School now has 6 grades, 10 teachers. During this year and in the ten years to follow, Mrs. Kinkaid was gradually adding more pupils, more teachers, and more grades to her little school on San Jacinto. First Birthday Party held. First student newspaper, The Kinhaia' Almanac, was published. The tenth grade was added. The eleventh grade was added. School was now a full college preparatory school. First Kinkaid graduating class. Little Gym was built for 323,000 fCost was kept low because of recent de- pression.J School building was reconditioned. High School Building finished. Kin- kaialian was published. that of Houston. DATE 1906 1907 1911 1914 1925 1925 1934 1935 1937 1940 1946 HOUSTON The city of Houston with a population of approximately 60,000, occupied an area of less than 15 square miles. The Houston. Post had a daily circulation of slightly over 19,000. The cornerstone of the old YMCA at Fannin and McKinney was laid. QThe YMCA outgrew this building several years ago, and the land is a part of the site of the present City National Bank.l The cornerstone of the Administration Building of Rice Institute was laid. The Port of Houston was formally opened and the S. S. Dorothy, bringing a cargo of coal, was the first cargo vessel to dock at the new port. Houstonas population was now estimated to be in excess of 250,000. Houston had become the third ranking U. S. port. Emerging from the depression, Houston was in the midst of a building boom. She ranked first in the South and eighth in the nation in building permits. Population now estimated at 350,000. 31,000,000 Houston Coliseum was fin- ished, and Houston was host to the huge Oil World Exposition.
