On August 1, 1992. USS Kinkaid and her crew departed on a six month deployment to the Arabian Gulf. It was the sixth such deployment in the ship's history, and it was to be an historic one. As a part of the USS Ranger Battle Group, Kinkaid was an integral part of Operation Southern Watch and the United Nations sanctions against Iraq. In addition, Kinkaid was the sister ship for the Russian ship, Admiral Vinogradov, the first Russian ship to join U.N. forces. While conducting operations with the ADM Vinagradov, the first Russian helicopter landing aboard a U.S. ship was conducted aboard Kinkaid. There were also ten port visits to seven different countries on a trip more than half-way around the world. This following pages tell the story of these and other adventures that occurred during Westpac 92-93.
