■U: J . Jy cm mDimG ofmIr Commanding Officer CDR Walter A. Tobias, Jr., USN Commander Tobias was graduated from the Uni- versity of New Mexico NROTC and commissioned Ensign on 25 January 1965. Following gradua tion he was ordered to the Mines- weeper GUIDE (MSO-447) as Operations Officer. Over the next two years he participated in several Opera- tion Market Time patrols off the coast of Vietnam. In March 1977, he was transferred to Commander, Mine Squadron PXEVEN and ordered to Da Nang, RVN, as Officer-in-i ' harge Minesweeping Boat Detachment ONE. He aug!iont ?d into the U.S. Navy in 1968. After gradu ting from the U.S. Naval Destroyer School in Nover. s ' r 1968, Commander Tobias received orders to the De.- lyer RENSHAW (DD-447) based at Pearl Harbor as l rineering Officer. In January 1970 he became commib )ning Weapons Officer of the fri- gate RATHBURNE - ' ' -1057). His first tour ashc was in the Bureau of Naval Personnel as a Junior t icer Assignment Officer. Fol- lowing this tour, he serv ' as Aide to the Naval Dep- uty, National Oceanic am Annospheric Administra- tion, Department of Comm rci in Washington, D.C. Commander Tobias reported as a student to the U.S. Naval War College, Newport, R.I., where he gradu- ated with distinction in June 1975. He returned to sea dutv in January 1976 as Execu- tive Officer aboard BARBEY (FF-1088). In January 1978, Commander Tobias received orders to Com- mander, Destroyer Squadron FIVE as Chief Staff Officer. Prior to being ordered to command of KINKAID (DD-965) Commander Tobias served as Anti-Surface Warfare Officer and Battleship Project Officer on the staff of Commander Naval Surface Forces Pacific. On 23 July 1983, Commander Tobias assumed command of USS KINKAID (DD-965). Among Commander Tobias ' decorations are two Meritorious Service Medals, two Navy Commendation Medals with Combat V , the Navy Achievement Medal with Combat V , the Combat Action Ribbon and the Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry with Palm. Commander Tobias is married to the former Bobbie Botkins of Albuquerque, N ew Mexico, and they have two children: Traci and Terri.
