' i h. tssse F s The Foreign Language Department . . . has incorporated the effects of new concepts in educational theory this year. The existing audio-lingual method evolved into a modified, individual- ized, independent study program at the third and fourth level of French and Spanish. Basically, the third and fourth levels were combined into one two-year course called advanced French and advanced Spanish. The student is offered sixteen C161 mini-courses over that period of time. These courses vary greatly in content and are selected by topics of special interest to the students. A student may choose as few as two courses per year or as many as eight. For each two courses successfully completed, he receives one-fourth CAD of a credit. At the beginning of each course, the student is given the basic requirements for an Af for a B, and for a Cv grade. After review- ing these and after a careful assessment of his ability, he is then asked to 1 contract for a grade. He then pursues his studies at his own rate of speed and in as much depth as he wishes. It is hoped that through this plan the students will experience a greater degree of contact with the language. It is hoped that this con- tact will be relevant to the students, needs and interests. It is further hoped that this contact will be a challenging, beneficial, and varied approach to learning the French Mr. Stephen Durgan S and Spanish language and culture. We believe that in a changing world, basic knowledge and fundamental skills last longer than any other kind. Therefore, the social studies is con- cerned with the development of inquiry skills, the development of attitudes and values, and the acquisition of knowledge.
