In keeping with this precept, I have chosen wildlife consenration as the 1987-'88 Lancer's motif. In the quarter century Kingsway has existed, wildlife has both improved in status and suffered setbacks. It is my sincere hope that Kingsway's twenty-fifth graduating class will realize that every servesboth ourrespect and Following is a list that even some teachers won't though, because this is a ing four years'worth of Sen- the good and bad times in you're a ninth grader for graderll, you can at least ries that the Graduating over and cherished. Bergin has radiated his smile at Kingsway since he came here in September of '73 as the advisor for the Class of '79. One of Kingsway's favorite teachers, when Mr. Ber- gin isn't teaching the electron configuration of the sodium atom, he can be found joking with students, coaching boys' cross- country, or sharing his never-ending supply of gum and candy with anyone who wants a piece. This swingin' bachelor and aging stud relates to students and faculty alike on an honest, friendly basis. Whether igniting magnesium on a Bunsen burner lwith goggles - of courselj or kicking dust in Delsea's face, Mr. Bergin is the type of man whose optimistic, extrovertial character endears him to all. An individual just doesn't put in all those years teaching without an innate love for the students. Every Senior who has had Mr. Bergin as a teacher easily sees the reason for this dedication. A yearbook should preserve memories of special people, places, and events. Mr. Bergin's chemistry class in Room 401 was certainly a memory that warrants special mention in the yearbook of the Graduating Class of 1988. 4 Mr. Thomas K. Gruber has been teaching biology at Kingsway for the last sixteen years. In this time he has touched the hearts and minds of thousands of Sopho- mores, introducing them to photosynthesis, angio- sperms, and animal taxonomy with genuine love pr the subject plus a touch of humor. Leaving with beautiful memories, we, the Class of '88, dedicate our yearbook to himg for there is not a single Senior who does not have special memories of Sophomore Biology -frog dissec- tion, insect-collecting, and all. Mr. Gruber C'Grube to his throngs of admirersj lives in Mickleton - just five minutes from Kingsway - with his wife, also a biology teacher, and daughter. He feels that, Many of the kids really make it worth your while. True, there'll always be some who are frustrating, but the effort you put in pays off in the Spring, when so many of them start reflecting what they've been learning all year. Mr. Gruber is also the advisor of the Astronomy Club, co-advisor of the Biology Club, and a Department Chairperson. You can find him jogging the backroads of Mickleton whenever he is not cavorting around the Franklin institute or Longwood Gardens, shuffling in the supply closet, painting his home, or eating sushi. With his eclectic and outgoing life, Mr. Gruber has become a much-loved and respected teacher by the Class of '88. ,,,., ?me l APPRE CIA T10 AN! l While Mr. Canonica has been a visible facet of our lives, Mr. Dennis Mozier has worked behind the scenes y of our vast graduating machine. Many of the Graduating l Classs' fondest memories have been touched by Mr. Mozier's patient and loyal hand. lVlr. Mozier's deft skill and presence have manifest- ed themselves in many forms. His greatest responsibility has been organizing fundraisers for our and many other graduating classes. His work has carried over many years, his caring has made past, present, and undoubt- edly, future proms splendorous and memorable. When not overseeing candy and calendar sales, lVlr. Mozier may be found teaching meteorology and astronomy to his eighth grade class. ln addition to arranging and embellishing the Florida trip, Senior Picnic, class jackets, class shirts, and mas- ter-minding the ordering and delivery of our caps and gowns, lVlr. Mozier will be remembered for his sense of humor, generosity, and sensitivity. lt is with pride and loyalty that we say good-bye to a very special man. l As Kingsway's twenty-fifth graduating class, much of our success has been in part to the tireless organization of our class advisor, Mr. Michael Canonica. This endearing, falciform Italian has offered years of his devotion and time to our class - the reason why we have the largest treasury, the reason why we have Senior Trip Commemorative T-shirts, the reason why our Senior Yearbooks could be subsidized by the class. Mr. Canonica, a graduate of the University of Southern California, has pontificated to hundreds of Junior High stu- dents about the importance of subjective clauses, Jules Verne, and verb-form agreement. Doing that for years could make anyone's hair thin out. During his advisorship, the Kingdom of Canonica sparkled with wit and wisdom. Whether overseeing the most sumptious prom in Kingsway's history, directing plays and comedies, su- pervising our award-winning A-V crew, or movin' to the rhythm of the Blues Brothers, IVlr. Canonica has laughed with and guided, steered and nurtured a group of ornery youths into a proud and loyal graduating class. T? This was the most difficult show we had ever attempted and required extra effort from everyone. After school rehearsals began on the first day of school and would continue through the month of October. Our first competition was at Clearview on October 2, where we scored a 50.9 and placed third. At Glassboro, on October 16, we scored a 61.25 and placed fourth. The next weekend found the unit at Buena, where we scored a 64.6 and again came in third. On Sunday we traveled to Absegami and got a sixth place, score of 62.35. Our final outing was on October 30, at Sterling H.S. We were once again in sixth place but our score went up to a 67.35. We hoped that we would break 70 at the Championships at Oakcrest on November 8, but it was not to be. We placed 10th out of 18 bands and scored a 69.35. One of our goals at the outset of the season was to beat Glassboro at the Championships. Glassboro came in 11th by .5 points. The only group ll school, Hammonton H.S., beat us. All the other schools in our Division are Group ll or IV. Due to bad weather and our participation in the football play-offs, we were only able to march in the Swedesboro Christmas Parade. Many thought that Kingsway would not do well against the larger Group ll schools in its first Group ll season. The football team proved the critics wrong with a 6-3-1 overall record. Delran defeated Kingsway in a 21-19 overtime heartbreaker in the first round of playoffs. This was Kingsway's first appearance in football playoffs. Offensive efforts were made by Steve Musumeci, Ed. Yurgin, Julian Holmes, Bob Stumm, and Melvin Carter. Bob Stumm, Matt Sorbello, Mark Jaramillo, and Ben Casella led a Kingsway defense that shut down some of the area's top scoring machines. Although many of our powerhouse Seniors will be leaving, a hopeful future remains with the likes of Mark Kupprion, Kevin Rokuskie, John Capozzi, and quite a few prospective Sophomores as well. As much as we can tell, the Dragons haven't lost their fire to the tempestuous maelstroms of time! The Lady Dragons did another fine job this season. They entered the Royal Division and advanced to the playoffs but were eliminated by Clear- view in the first round. The girls finished the season with a 17 - 8 overall record and a second place finish in their Division with a 14 - 5 division record. Point Guard Becky Piloto led the team in scoring with an average of 14.2 points per game. Jeanne Frizell also added to the Lady Dragons' outside attacks by leading the area in three-point goals with 28 in all. The girls did an excellent job, considering their lack of height. Sopho- more Devon England, at 5'7 , was the tallest player on the team. They made up for this with their speed, ball-handling ability, and outside attacks at the basket. They also got a lot of steals and blocked passes with their gutsy, aggressive playing style. With five seniors leaving the team, next year is going to be one of rebuilding, replanning, and re-evaluating strategies. But considering the grace that has blessed Girls' Basketball in the past, the future should hold some fast, competent, and aggressive players. 130 Top: LaShonda Scott, Kristy Savidge, Staci Junk, Mia Meloni, Kim Slusar, Julie gustyn, Mr. Fredericks. This year many young wrestlers got the opportunity to wrestle at the varsity level. This experience will give them a much better edge on the competition next year. The team had only three Seniors this year: Derek Clark, Bob Stumm, and Bo DeAngelo. Captain Bob Stumm, at 171 lbs., was voted to be the Team's Most Valu- able Player, leading the team with a record of 16 wins and 3 losses. Bo DeAngelo, showing some of the finest effort the team has ever seen, received the Dennis Martin Peace Award for his hard work and dedication to wrestling. Junior Kevin Rokuskie, at a daunting 189 lbs., received the Coach's Award for all the time and effort he spent in practices and matches. Junior Bill Fischer, second only to Stumm, was a constant performer on the mats. Tensing with an inchoate sense of their own potentiality, are the remaining un- derclassmen. They include some definite strong performances next season coupled with more opportunities to sublime their skills. Following its South Jersey Championship season in 1987, the team compiled a record of four wins and four- teen losses under Coach Russell. Despite the poor record, there were several individual players who had outstanding seasons. Senior Frank Tem- ean, who played third base and pitched, was named as a Gloucester County Times' Baseball All-Star. In addition to batting .483 with three home runs this season, Frank also set a new record at Kingsway: his one-hundredth hit came playing this year. He also pitched the Dragons to three of their four victories. The Times also gave Honorable Mention to seniors Ed Matthews ishortstopl, Ben Monaco isecond basel and Dan Sullivan ifirst basel, each of whom had terrific sea- sons. Recipe for Dragon domintion: Blend one part youth with one part experience: add a heaping helping of strong leadership: mix well, and top with personal sacrifice, good coaching, loyalty, and dedication. Serve generously each spring to New Jersey track teams, then sit back and watch them grimace! The Lady Dragon track team established themselves as the dominant force in South Jersey. They were named the Courier-Post Cup winners for 1988 as South Jersey's No. 1 track team. Senior captains Tonya Kier and Patti Bottiglieri guided their sixty-plus teammates through a season that will be long remembered by members of the track community. The Lady Dragons began by winning the Gloucester!Camden County Relay Championship in week one of the season. Week two brought a Pennsauken Relay title: week three a Woodbury Relay Garland was added: in week five, they snared the South Jersey Crown: the Gloucester County Championship was added in week six: while week seven brought a Tri-County Conference title. The penultimate title came in week eight as they were crowned the South Jersey Group ll Champions. Wedged between the eight major team titles was yet another undefeated season that included a 62V2-59V2 win over No. 2 ranked Ocean City and a dual meet win streak of 42 straight, the longest in South Jersey history. Besides Kier and Bottiglieri, this Dream Team had many other senior leaders. Elisa Davis and Dawn Hickman were not only successful in their own events, but also helped develop the younger sprinters and hurdlers. Patti Yurgin and Jeanine Hyndman were instrumental in the success of the field events, yet they still found time to work with the younger throwers. Janet McLaughlin and Melanie Steelman led a group of underclass jumpers to great heights, while Michelle Williamson and Kim Craley provided the team with inspiration and spiritual guidance. Graduation force these seniors to hang up the uniform of the Lady Dragon, but they have carried the baton of tradition with honor and have passed the baton to a very talented group of underclassmen. Youngsters such as Janet Morris, Lori Townsend, Jen Anderson, Sue Simkiss, Jen Liverman, Nancy Johnson, Mary Ann Yurgin, Carrie Burke, Sheri Wilgus, Mar- ietta Huchison, Gina Meloni, Kim Slusar, La Shanda Scott, Stacy and Julie Junk will be led by the experience of Lisa Dougher- ty, Shelly Collom, Jen Kuhnel, Sherry Little, and Roxanne Wallace. V l 5? f ATIONAL HO OR SOCIETY Scholarship means a commitment to learning. A student is willing to spend hours in reading and study, be- cause he knows the lasting benefits of a cultivated mind. We should continue to learn even when formal education has ended, for education ends only with life. knowledge is one great element in life which leads to the highest success, and it can be acquired in only one way - through diligence and effort. Learning furnishes the lamp by which we read the past, and the light which illuminates the future. Each candidate has the charge to continually expand his world through the opportunities inherent in scholarship. 1. 1 ,y,,,,,,,,, . ll II ,,,, I ?
