Cnce Upon A m S 'X-.N F P FCDRW RD A yearbook is a thread which connects our past to our future. The theme of this yearbook is the very romantic Medieval Period - our past. The pictures capture past victories, failures, friendships, and laughter. But for the Class of 1987, it also represents a door closing on child- hood years and a new beginning toward a rather uncertain future. We, the editors of the yearbook, wish to ded- icate this yearbook to the graduating class and wish them all the happiness and success life has to offer. This book is the product oflove, dedication, and many months of hard work. Toni and I could never have done it without the help of Rajeev Vaidyanathan, Lora Dempsey, Jana Spence, Mrs. Pelleriti, Mrs. Pollicino, Mrs. Schindel, and all those who worked on the art. We hope that in future years when you look at this yearbook you will remember with nostal- gia some of the happiest moments of your life. lst - ANGELA PANSERA TGP TE R ,XX Vff T N- 'VKXXX L4 A I I f. 1' , -h ffx. X . Mr. Thomas R. Yourison has also been an integral part of Kingsway for the past twenty years. His subdued demeanor belies a strong forceful character. ln class he exhibits perfect control, from his arm movements to his voice. He rarely raises his voice or loses his temper, which is possibly a manifesta- tion of his time in the Marines. He has an amazing knack to interact with students, relating his feelings and ideals in a dovm-to-earth, friendly nature. lt is with pride that we, the class of '87 appreciate Mr. Yourison for his time, his warmth, and his genuine caring. Mr. Yourison lives in Harrison Tovxmship with his wife and two sons. He enjoys his . . association with students. That's what makes teaching most rewarding and challenging. He believes that the epitome of a Kingsway student is most re- spectful, friendly, and interested in self- improvement. He would like to Uelaborate and elucidate, meaning to expand and make clear, his love of teaching. l'You wouldn't put in twenty years unless you really felt good about it. Summer vac- tation refreshes one after nine months, and you're ready to return in September. Mr. Yourison's relaxed attitude and calm bearing have endeared him to many students. lf you take the time to listen to Mr. Yourison you will learn not only history, but to appreci- ate the man himself. 4 3 Mr. William V. Moore has been teaching history at Kingsway for the last twenty-odd years. He won't tell us which years were the odd ones. His devotion to his students, his caring, paternal attitude, his patronizin- gly acerbic repartees, and his delightful sense of hu- mor engender him as a deeply appreciated, re- spected, and loved teacher. Mr. Moore lives in Clayton with his wife and two children. He enjoys 'lthe young people of Kingsway and says the students are decent, concerned about themselves, and have a healthy desire to learn. We have a motivated, respectful student body. l love it, because we get new perceptions on old ideas, and kids challenge the old, well-defunct concepts. As any of his students will vouch, Mr. Moore makes learning enjoyable. He creates a lively, ener- getic atmosphere wherein are discussed such topics as the morality of warp why the Japanese are beat- ing the U.S. in world trade, the pros and cons ofsocial- ism, communism, and capitalism: and the excitement that is George Bush. Mr. Moore's definition of l'luck is when prepara- tion meets opportunity. lt's little wonder why stu- dents adore such an optimistic man. SHN., PPRECIATIO As the class of 1987 passes from Kingsway into an uncertain but promising future, we look back and pay tribute to those who worked so hard and unselfishly for the success of this graduating class. lt is our opinion that ho one deserves such tribute more than Mrs. Ann Gress. During her four and a half years tenure as class advisor, our class was responsible for many fund raisers and other activities re- sulting in an unprecedented string of prize winning floats, murals, and hall decorations, which provided hours of fun for all involved. Due to her talents and organizational skills, coupled with our re- sources, we held first place for two consecutive years for the Egyp- tian Pyramid and Masters of the Universe mural themes in the Homecoming competition. She also was instrumental in arranging many ofour dances and laying down the foundations ofa successful Prom. Apart from class advisor, Ann Ciress was also the advisor to the Modeling Club, Writers' Club, Drama Club and dance choreogra- pher for the school musical. Mrs. Gress accepted a teaching position at Kingsway after grad- uating from the University of Pittsburgh, and was then awarded a graduate assistantship at Penn State University. At Penn State, she received outstanding leadership awards and completed the course work of two master's degrees in the time it would take to complete one. Mrs. Cxress competed in approximately sixty scholarship and talent competitions and won fifty-seven. We feel fortunate to have had such an outstanding personality for our class advisor, and wish her well in whatever she does. One and a half years ago, the class of 1987 was a ship with no captain, desperately in need of a class advisor. Mrs. Yoder, despite her already demanding position as the Stu- dent Council advisor, unselfishly took on this responsibility at the helm. She then proceeded to guide us through most of our Prom preparations and labored to make our Senior year one that shall be fondly remembered by all. Regardless of what task had to be done or what plans needed to be made, Mrs. Yoder saw to it that all activities were carefully organized and carried out with perfection. Her lead- ership and knack to recognize class leaders added to the smoothness with which our class glided through this final year at li.R.H.S. Mrs. Yoder shall be remembered by all, whether she was taking a head count in Florida or at the picnic, trying to keep her patience with those owing dues from seventh grade, or as a good friend. Lynn Yoder was many things to many people and will be sorely missed by the members of the Class of 1987. lt is to this hard-working, dedicated, understanding, and loving woman that we extend our greatest appreciation to along with our many thanks and a big hug. We shall always cherish the memory of her determination and kindness. Victories over Gloucester Catholic and Haddon Tovmship highlighted a very successful dual meet season. The team went on to finish 2nd in Gloucester County, 4th in S. Jersey Group 1 and 9th in the State and finished the season ranked as the 410 team in all of South Jersey. Capt. Ronnie Sumiel was joined by two new seniors Karen Miller and Janice Albert in anchoring the teams effort. Juniors Chris Wentz, Melanie Steelman, and Jennifer Venezia were joined by Freshmen Mia Meloni, Carin Connison, and Leslie Worrell to contribute to the teams success. The individual highlight was the outstanding year by junior Patti Bottiglieri: Tri-County Champion, 2nd in Gloucester County, S.J. Group I Champion, 6th in l'l.J. The Lady Dragons finished the season with an 11-1-I5 record, capturing the Tri- County Conference Classic Division Championship and making it to the South Jersey Group I Finals. The young team, starting one senior, five juniors, four sophomores and one freshman, was led by co-captains Heather Suessmuth, and Tonya Kier, seniors Helen Gaglianone, and Sandi Miller. The season was highlighted with strong team performances against Pitman C5-5 tieb, Delsea C1-1 tiel, and a O-O tie against a powerful Pennsville team. Along with the team's winning the championship, some individual players also received recognition. Heather Suessmuth was named to the All-Gloucester County first team. Heather was also selected to play in the North-South All Star Game. Tonya Iiier was named All Tri-County First Team, All Group I first team, and All Gloucester County first team. The Unit edged Northeast H.S., Deptford, and West Deptford. One week later, at Glassboro, we placed third behind Mainland and Edgewood, but improved our score to 55.55. The next night we travelled to Lenape to face five other Group I bands. When the scores were totalled, we had another first place trophy and an impressive 64.2! The following Sunday we bussed to Oakcrest H.S. to compete at the Absegami T.O.B. The Unit won four out of seven cap- tions and scored our highest total ever, 68.58, beating five other bands to place first once again. On Friday, October 24, we again improved our total to 69.45 but placed a disappointing fourth out of nine bands. Sun- day the 26th was Gloucester's T.O.B. and again we placed fourth, but this time against ten other bands. Thanks to a steady, all day rain, everyone's scores were down. We scored a 65.55. Sunday, November 2, was the date of the Chapter I, Group I Championships. We were all psyced, hoping to score a 70 or above and improve our standings in the chapter which could get us an invitation to the Atlantic Coast Championships. The Unit rose to the occasion. We scored a 70.65 and placed 6th out of the seventeen bands competing in Group I. Then we waited for the phone call from the National Judges Association, which would be our invitation to All-Chapters. Monday, the 5rd of November, was the longest day of the year for the members of the Marching Unit. By 2:50, rehearsa time, we still had not heard from the N.J.A. The directors were preparing the Unit for the worst when the phone rang. W WERE invited to the Atlantic Coast Championships. Seventy-eight bands from twelve Chapters had competed in Group I Tournament of Bands field shows and twenty-five of them were selected to participate in one final competition. Rain was forecast and rain it did! We stood in a downpour for an hour before we were allowed to take the field. The Unit slipped and slid their way up to twenty-fourth place, a gratifying finish to a most successful year. STANDING: J. Hunter, M. Weber, E. King, J. Moran, C. Dunn, P. Smith, D. STANDING: D. Jim McFadden led the way with two touchdowns and kicking one extra point. During the next two weeks the Dragons did not play very well and lost games to Delsea and Pitman. g Clayton next visited Dragonland and with a solid perfonfnance from the defense, the Dragons prevailed 16-6. This game also saw junior quarterback Steve Musumeci throw two touchdovm passes to senior Dennis Burlingame. The next game saw the Dragons break the .500 mark with an exciting 25-6 victory over rival Woodstovm High School. The victory was again highlighted by a fine defensive effort from Mark Jaramillo, Steve Caltabiano, Mel Carter, Matt Sorbello, Bob Stumm, and the rest of the 'lHit Platoon. Steve Musumeci again led the offensive passing attack while Todd Hickman, Jim McFad- den, and Mike Williams spearheaded the running game. The victory highlighted a festive Homecoming Day leading into the Homecoming Dance that evening. The 5-2 Dragons then traveled to Schalick where the offense, behind four touchdovms passes by Musumeci, exploded for 42 points in leading the Dragons to a 42-0 win. Again a stellar performance by the Hit Platoon. On November 1, a cold and rainy Saturday, the Gloucester Lions visited Kingsway. The Dragons erupted for 41 unan- swered first half points and maintained that margin for a 41-0 victory. The Dragons now started to emerge as one of the better teams in the Tri-County Conference. On November 8, the Dragons played Glassboro H.S. with the Classic Division Championship at stake. It was a great football game with both teams playing hard and determinedly. Kingsway lost 12-6. On Thanksgiving Day, our arch rivals, the Penns Grove Red Devils invaded Dragonland only to find a hungry bunch of dragons waiting for them. Mark Jaramillo's punt block and great defensive effort from the Hit Platoon led the way to a great Turkey Day victory for the Dragons. The last victory enabled the team to compile a respectable 6-5 record. Con- gratulations to the entire football squad for a great team effort in 1986. The 'lWe Not l slogan exemplified the attitude of the team and will act as a guiding force for the Dragon football team of 1987. 0 54? 5 Sinn nr' I Q 154 fi fWm.'l'x,1.4r'w W 'M 5 'M J'1Z 1i y, ,M H512 as avr 5 1,32 Q42 is Wwww - a . 1 af ev, .1 ' I. 1' Q .' -' 5' , 52' ,Mx fg. a .A,..f- 'M,,w v pff' A, u s s o ' Q ,Q , ' u Q ' Q 1 Q 1 ,n , ' ,.., r,f',g Q .'.v'.'v: .,f,f.., 0 , q.',ef,, ,A u' ' v' ' 'fi - . v vw. The loss of six varsity members from last year's squad led most people to believe this would be a down year. When the season ended, this young squad had defended the Tri-County Classic Championship and posted a 20-5 record: the best in the history of the school. It was a young team, a very short team, and an inexperienced team. lt was a team without a superstar, but it was a team with incredible desire and heart. Senior co-captain Sheryl Ferry led the attack with 18 points and 20 rebounds a game. Junior Becky Piloto established herself as the best point guard in the conference, while her classmates Tanya Kier, Daum Hickman, and Jeanne Frizell constantly defense. Freshman Devon England made vital contributions that served notice the future looks promising. But it was the inspirational play of senior co-captain Heather Suessmuth which epitomized the character of this team. When Heather went doum with two broken wrists in mid season, the team could have folded, but didn't. Instead, they returned to action to score 5 crucial 4th quarter points against Royal champion Pennsville was a moment that will long be remembered. Having compiled a record of seven wins and fifteen losses with a new coach and a lot of young talent, our future basketball seasons look extremely encouraging. There were so many close ball games, early and throughout the season, that we lost by a very small margin. Had the outcome of these games been different, our ability to compete with a greater confidence level would have meant an awful lot to the season as well as the entire program. In particular our game against Delsea, who, at the time, was in first place and eventually, the Tri-County Champion, was extremely excit- ing but disappointing when we lost in the closing minutes by one point. All of our players contributed significantly to the success of our season. Without their enthusiastic attitude and dedica- tion, our future would not look so promising. I really believe that our program has potential and talent to be competitive next year. The team's enthusiasm and dedication to play and work hard provides the very founda- tion for a winning season. The captains for the team for 1986-87 were Steve Musu- meci, Bill Sumiel, and Mike Miller. The leading scorer and as- sists was Steve Musumeci. Led by senior cap- tains Chris Evenrvine and Stanley Atkinson, the Dragons compiled a 2-125-2 re- cord. Although the team has a poor dual record, a strong foundation was laid for the coming years, and several strong individuals had great seasons. lt should be noted that Chris Evenvine was the champion of the Christmas toumament at Oakcrest High School. Chris also advanced to the finals of the district 29 tournament in a rematch of last year's championship. He then ad- vanced to the Region 8 tournament where he won 2 and lost 2 matches. He com- piled a 22-5 for the season and a 76-17-1 record for his high school years, placing him high on the South Jersey All Time Winners list. Chris was 1st Team All Tri- County All Stars and 2nd Team District 29 All Stars. He was also the high point man for the Dragons. Stanley Atkinson also had a line year posting 15-4-1 record. Stanley ad- vanced to the finals of the Oakcrest Christmas tournament where he was defeat- ed by 4 time district champion Wayne Marchell of Pitman. He also won the conso- lation finals at the District 29 tournament. Stanley was named to the 2nd Team All-Tri-County All Stars. Senior Sean Dunn also provided plenty of excite- ment for the Kingsway fans. Sean always made it excit- ing wrestling in the unlimited class. He was the small- est of the unlimited and always gave it his best shot. 1987-88 for the Kingsway wrestling program will be a year in which the building process will continue upon a group of fine young underclassmen. 146 Clearview Bishop Eustace Glassboro Williamstown Woodbury Woodstown Gateway Pitman Haddon Heights West Deptford Delsea St. James Schalick Pennsville Penns Grove Salem Audubon I X 55 523 ' YR Q SWIIVIIVII O K Cilouc. We have oft-proven, with passionate zeal, the extent to which we will go for Kingsway Pride. Last year's graduation of Seniors left a not wholly-promising outlook for the 86 - '87 swimming season. Nevertheless, the Dragon Aquanauts came out with a 5-8 win-loss record. We take great pride in vociferating that all of the wins were outside of our Division. Hilary Hutchison, David Eiger, and Marc Blair, our star upperclassmen, were consistent in their excellent performances. We will miss Hilary and David, who were the first Kingsway swimmers who have won four-year varsity letters. Our best times occurred with the individual events. We gained the most points by underclassmen Clary Hart, John Capozzi, Sherri Wilgus, Carin Connison, Mark Kupprion, Lisa Broum, and Mike Morris. With these supemalnatators, the future looks as lucent as an exploding Andromedan supernova. The '87 - '88 swim team will be off to an excellent season. Coach Russell was excited about hisjunior stars as well. Everything fell into place for the Dragon base- ball team, and they had a spectacular season. The pitching lived up to its potential and had great fielding behind it. GIRLS' TRACK l.lllGSlV y ,ite CO-CAPTAIN: HEATHER SUESSMUTH Amidst a cloud of speculation, the 1987 Ciirls' Track Team re- grouped to become again one of South Jersey's finest teams. A ban- ner 1986 campaign, which resulted in a State Championship title, was hard to top, but the Lady Dragons were ready to meet the challenge that lay ahead. This year's team promised to be an equally strong team. Although the Dragons lost some strong competi- tors with the graduation of some champions at all lev- els, the 1987 team was dedicated to the cause of main- taining the fine tradition of champions. The Dragons did not do as well this year as the pre- vious year, however, they do currently rank as 12th in South Jersey. Head Coach Richard O'l'leill presented the Coaches Award to Mike Williams and Chris Richter: Most Valuable Player went to Melvin Carter: Frank Marks Most Courageous Award to Chris Richter, Outstanding Field Performer, Julian Holmes and Rob Stumm: Out- standing Track Performer, Brewster Ward and Bill Sum- iel, and Unsung Hero Award to Vemon Marino. 51,1 Wm CO-CAPTAIN: BILL SUMIEL Q I ,dffsm and MF., U25 S ,,, gf ? at 2 . IT'S VERY HARD TO BELIEVE, AND IT'S VERY HARD TO TAKE, GOD JUST TOOK HIM SO SUDDENLY, HIS LIFE IS NOW A WASTE. FOR SCOTT WAS LOVED BY MANY, MANY OF WHICH WE DID NOT KNOW, ALL LOVE I'IIM SO DEARLY, AND IT'S FOR HIM THAT THEY NOW WOE. I WISH IT WAS ALL A DREAM, FROM WHICH I'D JUST WAKE UP, BUT I KNOW THAT I'M NOT SLEEPING, THIS THING THAT THEY CALL LIFE IS JUST SO MESSED UPI 212 I OFTEN THINK AND WONDER, OF WHERE HE MIGHT BE NOW, AND WHO IS WATCHING OVER HIM, AND WHAT HIS LIFE IS LIKE NOW? SCOTT WAS A SPECIAL PERSON, WHO LOVED EVERYONE SO MUCH, HIS DEATH HAS BROKEN ALL OUR HEARTS, WE JUST MISS HIM HERE ON EARTH SO MUCH! DON'T EVER TAKE ANYTHING FOR GRANTED, BECAUSE TOMORROW IT COULD BE GONE, LIFE IS TOO SHORT TO WASTE, FOR WHATEVER REASON RIGHT OR WRONG.
