' h.Xv E-17 ai Just as there are many frontiers to explore in space the completion of our high school careers launches us into another frontier for us to explore, confront and evenutally overcome. Graudation marks a beginning for us. It may represent the end of our young adult lives, but with it come the start of our adult years. As adults we will each have different avenues to explore. Many of us will never meet again, but some of us may perhaps meet again in some unknown place, brought together by yet that same unseen force that enabled us to spend four years living, laughing, learning, and knowing each other at our beloved Kingsway Regional. Now that it is time to part, go our separate ways, and find our individual happiness we will always remember the four years of our lives that we spent here at Kingsway. The times we spent will forever be fondly remembered. And so the co-editors of the 1986 LANCER wish the class of 1986 the best of LUCK and may your hopes and dreams soar to the skies!!! f 2 4 i' UF' TEN CARO WILLIAM REINERTH I THOMAS HILTON CHRISTINE GARRETT W! Mr. Velykis was born in Woodbury, New Jersey and attended Paulsboro High School. He was in the United States Air Force for four years and worked for Mobil Oil Corporation for two years. He then attend- ed Temple University on a full Athletic scholarship and graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree. After graduating he taught at Clayton High School and the Swedesboro Elementary School. He also coached baseball, football, and basketball at Swedesboro High School. When King- sway opened in 1963, Mr. Velykisjoined the staff as a health and physical education teacher. He was also the Dean of Students. In 1970 Mr. Velykis attended Graduate School at Glassboro State College, and received his Master's Degree. At the same time he became Vice-principal of Kingsway. ln 1973 he became principal and served this position until his retirement. He is married to the former Margaret Dellaretta and has one son, Ted, also a member of the graduating Class of 1986. Mr. Velykis has given his service to Kingsway for the Q3 years that it has been open. We, the staff of the LANCER find it an honor to dedicate this yearbook to Mr. Norman Velykis for his dedicated service to King- sway for these 23 years. THANK YOU!!!! FlF'FFlEE.'IFI TIUN i Ms. Kimberly VanZoeren Five years ago Ms. Kimberly VanZoeren accepted the task of advisor for the Class of 1986. During those early years, graduation seemed distant with many fund raisers, events, and hurdles to overcome. Despite the difficulties, Ms. VanZoeren with firm dedication successfully coordinated fund raisers and other activities. Because of her expert guidance the Prom was no less successful than the Florida trip or the Senior Picnic. These events will remain in the memories of many and in the years to come looked back with great fondness. As the Class of 1986 graduates, they would like to take this moment to offer their sincere appreciation to Ms. Kimberly VanZoernen. Her dedication and hard work did not go unappreciated. i LUHU 5 LUHU TALLESTXSHORTEST: Robert Potzinger, Deepa Quadir YM 5 as MOST STUDIOUS: Carol Rival, Dwight Payne h Www 'S-43? M' Jl'K.f ,4 V, . The unit began their season early with a scorching pa- rade in Wildwood. New members were initiated, while veteran mem- bers were reminded of past hospital block parties. Under the leadership of new drum majors Wendy Reeves and Lea Stanley, the unit quickly recovered from their exhaustion to begin their Tournament of Bands competition season at Clearview High School where they placed third. The unit continued their season with com- petitions at Millville and Lenape High Schools, placing second in each. Buena was the next stop for the Dragons. The 1985 Kingsway Soccer Team has gained a great deal of respect from not only their league opponents, but from most of their soccer powerhouses in South Jersey, where they ranked 19th, and finished with a final record of 14-6. The team came into the season with a dream of winning the Tri-County Conference title Cthe conference is not broken down into Classic and Royal for Soccerb, but their dream was denied to them. After losing their first 4 out of 6 games, including upsets by Pitman and Glassboro, the team rebounded to win its next 11 out of 19, including 8 in a row. The team was going into the playoffs with a full head of steam. Their first round draw was Pitman who fell, thanks to a goal by Brendan Garozzo C11 goalsh. The next game was against perennial powerhouse Riverside also the eventual state champion. The game finished 7-O in favor of Riverside, a sad end to a grand season, The team reached this point through steady teamwork, though the offense and defense both had their leaders. The most noticeable was senior center forward Todd Suessmuth. This blond-haired wonder broke both the school and the Tri-County league records for scoring a whopping 42 goals. 110 , ml Urlid, hh ilimlll ill 'Him HIV 'M His accolades included, all Tri-County first team, South Jersey group 1 first team, all South Jersey second team, North group 1 honorable mention, and team MVP tmost valuable playerb. The defense was not without its leaders either. Senior sweeper Gregg Holgate C9 goalsb, and stopper Sean Cianciulli CQ goalsb provided the experience in front of Junior phenomenon goalkeeper, Chris Haines. Awards came to all three of these players: Holgate - All Tri-County first team South Jersey Group 1 first team, North Jersey group 1 honorable mention and coaches awards, Cianciulli-All Tri-County second team, team unsung hero award, Haines-All Tri-County first team. Senior Doug Hargrave, returning from a broken leg the year before, was given the most courageous award by his coach John Rajczy. Coach Rajczy summed up the season by saying The Magnificent 7 CSuessmuth, Holgate, Cianciulli, Hargrave, Tom Hiton, Dave DeStefano, and Dave Hickman? left their mark permanently on soccer at Kingsway, with a lot of great memories, like the night game against Pitman. In our short existence, we have beaten every team in the Conference at least once. The excitement and the fun the team shared can never be forgotten, it will be handed down to the younger group coming up with even greater potential. -9 0 T' lic.: Y -iTf Aix.. 1 . With much confidence the girls went to the championships where they played their most challenging game of the season against Gloucester. They played very well in this champion- 'Nm ship game but were defeated by Gloucester with a score of 1-0. Some of the outstanding players of the season were seniors Monica Heyward, Brenda Urban, Robin Brown, MaryJo Coyle, and junior Heather Suessmuth. High goals were set in the begin- ning of the season and the girls worked hard to reach these goals. Vergera, C. Palladino. The 1985-86 Kingsway Cross-Country team, under the direction of Coach Tom Bergin, completed its first-ever undefeated season. From the very first practice in September, every member of the team practiced and ran to their fullest potential. The team's strong will and determination was a major factor in the achievement of their undefeated season, The team's nucleus, consisting of Chris Richter, Tri-captains Donnie Ray, Pedro Vergara, and Steve Miller, along with Joe Billingsley and Jay Jakimowicz, consistently led the team in its eleven victories. The varsity squad was rounded out by seniors Stephen Scott and Jeff Spuler, juniors Tom Gasso, and Steve Williams, and sophomore Bob Prosser. The Kingsway Harriers trampled 5 teams by more than 20 points and had Q shutouts. Coach Bergin believed that man-for-man, this was the best team assembled. The meet against Clearview promised to be the Dragons' toughtest obstacle, but the team came through and defeated the Pioneers. The team's enthusiasm was clearly shown as some runners even went to such extremes as to wear war-paint during camtain meets. The Dragon Harriers roared over every opponent in the Classic Division, which eventually led of the Tri-County Conference Classic Division Championships. Although, the team completed well in dual meets, they were unable to do as well as they had anticipated in larger meets such as the South Jersey Open, Gloucester County Championships, and South Jersey Group 1 Sectionals. They ended the season on a disappointing note, finishing sixth in the South Jersey Group 1 Sectional Meet, which unfortunately did not qualify the team for the State Meet. Coach Bergin is optimistic about next year's team. Returning letter winners Donnie Ray, Chris Richter, Jay Jakimowicz, Rob Prosser, Tom Grasso, and some possible newcomers promise a bright future for next year's Cross- Country team. Venezia. 1985 marked the beginning of a new era with the creation of a separate Girls Cross Country team. Amidst speculation and doubt a group of nine sophomores, two juniors, and one senior came together to make history. The team was led by sophomore Patti Bottiglieri and senior, captain Kelly Sully. Rounding out the top five runners were Melanie Steelman, Ronnie Sumiel, and Becky Piloto. Chelsie Snyder named Mr. Fredericks, Uncle Pugness and the team became known as the Pug Pack. In the beginning the team set five goals: to have a winning season, to be one of the top two teams in the county, qualify for states, place two runners in the top 15 in South Jersey, and have two members be county all-stars. All of these goals were reached through hard work and dedication. Patti Bottiglieri finished third in Gloucester County Championships, 129 first in Tri-County Race, 19th in South Jersey Open, third in South Jersey Group I Sectionals, ninth in the State Group I Championships, and went to the meet of champions. Kelly Sully finished fifth in Gloucester County Championships, second in Tri-County Race, 30th in South Jersey Open, and tenth in South Jersey Group I Sectionals. Both Patti Bottiglieri and Kelly Sully made the County All-Star team. The team finished the year with an 8-Q dual record, they were second in the Gloucester County Championships, first in Tri-County Conference, third in South Jersey Group I and ninth in New Jersey Group I Championships. With 11 letter winners returning and a score of new runners already indicating their desire to be a part of the program, Pug-Pack ll should be just as successful. di... ,N ,, ., V..-ULN, . First year coach, Karyn Pickard, and the Lady Dragons, did everything to fullfill, and exceed, the pre-season billings. Led by seniors Denise Liles, Brenda Urban, Robin Brown, Monica Heyward, Kathy Dawson, and Shirley Monaco, the team won the Tri-County Conference Classic Division Championship, went to the South Jersey Group I Finals, and compiled a Q0-4 record. These were all milestones for our school and team. The season was filled with some great individual efforts as Denise Liles surpassed 1000 points in both and rebounding. The season also brought about the emergence of the Jams and the sunglass crowd known as the Bleacher Bums . It was a Championship season in which our school and commu- nity were brought together by a bunch of hustling young ladies being directed by an enthusiastic, energetic, and dedi- cated coach. It was a season that we all wished would never end. It left us with a great sense of pride for our school, and a feeling of eagerness for the 86-87 season. As a result of a relatively young and inexperi- enced team the season ended with only six victories out of seventeen games played. The top players of the season were Captains Phil Yurgin, Chris Everwine, and Stan Atkinson, and also Jason Clevenger, Ed Yurgin, and Joe Soloman. Senior Phil Yurgin placed 2nd in the District, junior Stan Atkinson placed 3rd in the District, and Chris Everwine became District Champion. Chris also placed 3rd in the State Regional. Overall, the team placed 5th in the District of 29. Joe Soloman and Chris Ever- wine became 1st Team Classic Division All-Stars and Stan At- kinson and Ed Yurgin became 2nd Team Classic Division All- Stars. An exceptional moment of the season was at District finals at 122, Chris Everwine beat Dean Duca in overtime on a criteria decision. The team placed 5th at the Oakrest Christ- mas Tournament and Sports- manship Trophy . Although the season was not very bright the team improved substantially. With only one senior leaving the team should be more experienced next sea- son. A hopeful outlook is cast for a very successful season next year. The season ended with a record of seven wins and five losses. This year the South Jersey Swim League formed two divisions, All Group IV and Group Ill schools in the Pacific Division and the smaller schools in the Atlantic Division. The talented team was looking forward to a possible Division Championship if they could defeate Haddonfield and the two new unknown teams in the League. These two teams turned out to be Woodstown and and Clearview. Clearview and Haddonfield were conquered but the previously unknown Woddies brought a team loaded with talent. Thus, the teams hopes for a championship were lost along with the meet. The meet with Haddonfield was one of the teams most exciting moments of the season. The dragon swimmers needed a Qnd and a 3rd or a 1st place to win. They took a Qnd and a 3rd and won the meet by one point. This was their closest victory in three years. Three seniors went to the State Championships. David Pollak qualified in 4 events and Ted Velykis in Q events in the State Championship Meet. Tracy Cairns qualified to go to the State Diving Championship Meet. Overall, the team had a very good year. The five departing seniors will leave the team with a rebuilding year in yet a tougher division. Everyone on the team will miss departing seniors: Louise Buchenhorst, Tracy Cairns, Kelly Sully, David Pollak, and Ted Velykis. 150 Cherry Hill East Audubon Clearview Woodbury Woodstown Haddon Heights Haddonfield Cherry Hill West Haddon Township Gloucester Catholic Washington Township Highland 's Y f 4' M95 ,,.....fa'-1' .ww E 'q.. a+ x ,X 9 i lv WWW tangy EEHLL Standing: L. However, with the return of pitching sensation Dennis Burlingame the season began to look a little brighter. The Dragons began the season a bit slowly as the team lost its first five games. The final scores of the games during the season were very close. Their final record of eleven wins and twelve losses clearly showed just how close a season they had. Throughout the season much emphasis was put on pitching and defense. Some outstanding players of the season were pitcher Dennis Burlingame, third basemanfpitcher, Frabnk Temean, centerfielder, Shawn Donnelly, captainfoutfiel- der, John Vespe, and second baseman Chris Everwine, Other contributions were made by senior Jeff Spuler, juniors Sam Monaco, Aaron Holt, and Brenden Garozzo, and sophomore Steve Musumeci, Ben Monaco and Ed Matthews. Head Coach John Russell was extremely pleased with the eleven wins and hopes for an even better season next year. Since the team will only be losing two seniors, John Vespe and Jeff Spuler the team should be more experienced and have a better season next spring. Led by Head Coach Rich O'Neill and assistant coach Tom Bergin the team went on to win the Gloucester County Championship and the Tri-County Conference Classic Division Championship. Although the team had great success up to this point, they lost the State Champion- ship by one-tenth of a point. A positive factor of their success was that the team was composed of 60 members. The team was led by seniors Eric Randall, Shawn Ruffin, Ed Johns, and Johan Sundlof. Some outstanding players re- ceived some much deserved recogni- tion this spring. Shawn Ruffin was State Champion in the 100 and Q00 dashes. He also won All South Jersey, All Gloucester County, and All Tri- County. Eric Randall was State Cham- pion in the 400 hurdles and won All Gloucester County and All Tri-County. Mike Williams 4110 high hurdles, 400 intermediate hurdles? won All Glou- cester County. Ed Johns C100-9003 won All Gloucester County. Bill Ves- sels C8003 won All Tri-County and received honorable mention in Glou- cester County. It was a year none of the team or fans will ever forget. Head Coach Mike Klaszky and Assistant Coach Milt Freder- icks point to the overall team balance as the Keys to success, but there were standouts. Heading the list was All-American Denise Liles. This outstanding Senior capped off a brilliant high school career with Q overall NJ State Championships in the 100m and 200m dashes. Qnd year performer Robin Brown lowered her own 800m record by 9 seconds finishing Qnd in the state with a 2-16. Kelly Sully, Ronnie Sumiel, and Ronya Kier teamed with Robin Brown for a state champion- ship in the 1600m relay. Sophomore Patti Bottiglier finished 3rd in the state in the 3Q00m, Angel Roots scored 10 state championship points in the long jump, 100m and Q00m. As great as this year was don't count the Dragons out next year. While 3 top point performers Liles, Sully and Brown will be greatly missed there are some Q5 letter winners returning. They are Carol Simkiss, Becky Piloto and Patty Yurgin. In the weight events, Tonya Kier 400, Ronnie Sumiel and Dawn Hickman in the hurdles and Heather Suessmuth and Patti Boltiglieri heading up a resur- gent distance corps, and the multi-tal- ented Angel Roots in sprints and jum- ping.
