The past years spent within the halls of Kingsway Regional High School have been memorable ones. However, the year at hand holds a special meaning to all, especially the graduating class. We have faced every challenge imaginable, and we have shared this year as members of a class, a club, or a team, each of us has found in it some personal significance and satisfaction. Nevertheless, these moments would soon be lost with the passage of time. However, the magic of this year shall remain forever in the pages of the yearbook. Not only will the graduating class treasure this book and the memories that are captured within, but all the students here at Kingsway, for each is a part. With this thought, we, the Co-editors, proudly present the 1984 edition of the LANCER. Katurakes It is not often that a new teacher will take on yet another job after becoming the new cheerleading advisor. Still, Ms. Katurakes accepted the position of co-advisor for the seventh grade class in 1979. She has been with us since then, and a great deal has been accomplished during that time. As the new cheerleading advisor, her enthusiasm and cheerful disposition inspired us to become more involved in class activities. As a result, our seventh grade class won first place for our Wild West Float. She was also instrumental in designing the other four award winning floats. Additional contributions to our class include a memorable prom, a successful Senior trip to Florida, and two Powder Puff victories. All the hours of planning and dedicated service were greatly appreciated. Therefore, as a token of our graditude, we the class of 1984 dedicate the LANCER to Ms. Lisa Katurakes. 4 tw Dennis Mozier Nary five years have passed since Mr. Dennis Mozier entered the increasing eternity of Kingsway High School to educate eighth graders in the wonders of earth science. Later he would guide this same group of confused children through their graduation. Mr. Mozier took the reigns as co-advisor of the class of 1984 and brought us through the transition from junior to senior high. During this time, the class was responsible for many successful projects and activities. An unprecidented string of award winning floats was our major claim to fame. However, more important than Mr. Mozier's accomplishments and contributions to the memories of a graduating class was his patience and good humor which he constantly exuded through his tenure as advisor to the class of 1984. As the 1983-1984 school year and subsequently our high school days draw to a close, we can look back on Mr. Mozier and his many hours of dedicated and caring service with fond memories of a fine teacher, advisor and friend. Too often the deserving are left without a true, lasting idea of the heartfelt emotions and gratitude held so tightly within a large group of individuals. As our lasting tribute to a rare and unique man, we, the class of 1984, leave this yearbook as a token of our gratitude to Mr. Dennis Mozier. 5 Evelyn Dunn Often the hectic immediacy of high school life forces one to overlook some of the essential components necessary for a smooth running and efficient school. One such indispensable element of Kingsway life is Board of Education secretary Mrs. Evelyn Dunn. Mrs. Dunn has been affiliated with the Swedesboro school district for the past 33 years. She was first employed as the secretary for the superintendent in Swedesboro High School from 1951 to 1961. She then took on the position of Board of Education secretary when Kingsway was completed. Mrs. Dunn was born and raised in Westville, New Jersey. After her graduation from Woodbury High School in 1935, Mrs. Dunn attended the Strayer School of Business in Philadelphia. Later, she met and married her husband of 37 years, Mr. Robert Dunn. Presently the Dunns reside in Swedesboro, where they have made their home since 1951. Mr. Dunn keeps busy running his own company, the Swedesboro Publishing Company. Whereas, Mrs. Dunn spends her spare time tending the lush lawns of their homestead. However, they do find the time to get away from it all and travel around the country. All of us here at Kingsway will surely miss Mrs. Dunn as well as her dedicative service to the school and the community. We the 1984 Lancer staff wish to extend our best wishes for an enjoyable and rewarding retirement. Barber Band Uni ormly Excellent As the 1983-84 Dragon Marching Unit strutted proudly onto the football field for their traditional pre-game and half time presentations, they were wearing their new uniforms. The array of red, white, and black, depicting the school colors, made it quite visible that a new season was at hand. Performances were not limited to football games alone. The finely tailored Unit appeared in many parades and competitions as well. Their debut was made in the Tournament of Bands, which was held at Triton H.S. In Group I competition they won second place, missing a first place trophy by one-tenth of a point. Other crowd pleasing performances followed at Bensalem, Eastern, Woodbury, Buena, and Washington Township High School. In addition to afternoon football games and evening competitions, the Dragons also found time to proudly display their talents in the Woodbury Fall Parade, the Atlantic City Columbus Day Parade, the Atlantic City Christmas Parade, the Millville Christmas Parade, the Salem Christmas Parade, and the Swedesboro Memorial Day Parade. On May 13th, the Marching Band traveled to Dorney Park where they performed in a parade and enjoyed a fun-filled day. With the arrival of spring, the Annual Band Banquet, g,,.,.w 'ffQ.:.: sponsored by the Band Boosters, completed the season's activities. On this special occasion the departing seniors were honored. The graduating seniors are Michael Pitts, Tom Foley, Lisa Donofrio, Otto Wilson, Elise Donnelly, and silk flag captain Patricia Posey. These truly dedicated musicians and performers will be missed not only by Ms. Kisela and Mr. Eitel but also by all returning letterwinners. The seniors leave with the knowledge that although they will be missed the great depth of talent at Kingsway will provide another successful season for the Dragon Marching Unit. 1'00'.l'BA.'l'.lL .ar ,........-.... The football program garnered championships at every level of competition. The junior varsity was undefeated in 8 games, and the freshmen Lizards tied for their Conference championships. However, the spotlight was on the 1983 Classic Division Champions. The Dragon's championship campaign began somewhat inauspiciously with an opening-game loss to arch rival Woodstown. Nevertheless, the varsity squad continued on undaunted to post a spotless 5-O Tri-County Conference Classic Division record and a very respectful 6-3 record overall. The team's prodigious mark of excellence, particularly that in the Classic Division, garnered for them the first football championship in the history of Kingsway Regional High School. Major contributions to the success of Barchuk's eleven were made by John Diggs and John Horner. Diggs, a bruising fullback, obtained many accolades: All South Jersey, All Group I, All Tri-County, and All Delrfware Valley. John's efforts attained him a scholarship to the University of Kansas. Whereas defensive tackle John Horner's superior play secured for him positions on the All Group I and Tri-County teams. Other Tri-County Conference performers were Paul Crane, Kian Conley, Derwin Fauntleroy, Andy McFadden, Peter Yurgin, Greg Price, and Lou Tirado. Senior standouts were Steve Banff, Bob Badolato, Todd Clevenger, Gene Edmund and speedy Otto Wilson. The coaching staff is anxiously awaiting the opening kick-off of the 1984 season. With the outstanding success of the freshman and the junior varsity teams, the Dragons should be contenders for a South Jersey Group I Championship. 58 7 +1 Ni r f K'-ww zbh L' wg' X Q E ' in , 4 , 1 , A jvv N I 47 . Co-captains Mark Bohn and Sam Saporito led this talented but inexperienced group of runners. Despite their inexperience, the Dragon harriers' awesome speed enabled them to have a successful season. Their only two losses were a heartbreaking 27-28 loss to Salem and a loss to Delsea, the eventual Tri-County Champions. Along with acquiring the Classic Division Crown, many individual honors were captured. The teams nucleus: senior Dave Scott, and juniors Mark Bohn, Mike Warner, and Don Pyle were all chosen to the Tri-County Conference Classic Division All-Star team. Special honors were bestowed upon Mark Bohn as the Classic Division Individual Champion. Departing harriers are Jorge Beniquez, Jenny Black, Bruce Jones, Jose Padro, Sam Saporito, and Dave Scott. They will be greatly missed, however, Mark Bohn, Mike Warner, Don Pyle, Steve Scott, Steve Miller, and John Patti will form the heart of an outstanding cross country team capable of winning another Tri-County Classic Division Crown. 62 5 , , 1 W I , , , 1 1 E I Si 'nav' DEM v 1' Q1 gig is QQ is 'QQ L' 1 ffwva 4 'is s-,hav sb Pennsville Pennsauken Pitman Gloucester Clearview Berlin Tech Woodstown Pennsville Gateway Pitman Gloucester Clearview Woodstown Tech. Sperber Soccer Seeks Success The 1983 soccer team faced all the hardships imaginable that a first year varsity team could have. We were inexperienced and lacked depth, said Coach Rajczy. The nucleus of the team was made up of seven sophomores, whose experience gained this year will definitely make a difference on next year's campaign. The first half of the season was rough. Playing experienced and established clubs, such as Woodstown, Pitman, and Pennsville, were tough hurdles to overcome. As the season progressed, the performance of the hooters improved to the point that each game was more exciting to watch. Among the outstanding players are the Gloucester County First Team representatives: senior Ross DeStefano, junior Buddy West, and sophomores Dave DeStefano, Gregg Holgate, and Todd Suessmuth. Ross DeStefano and Todd Suessmuth received additional recognition by being named to the Tri-County Second Team. Buddy West, Dave DeStefano and Gregg Holgate won honorable mention to the Tri-County Second Team. Coach Rajczy was not depressed despite the losing season. He says, I am optimistic about the upcoming season, and with our increased experience and depth, we will be a team to contend with in the Classic Divisionf, Coach Rajczy goes on to say that the team will continue to work hard in order to have a respectable 84 season. 66 WM N'-MH ,,,, ,,,, - N,,h, ,-,N,,, W ' Q f ,V ny H , ,WWW W W M . ----M...,,,M -M Www' , iq, , ,,f 119,19 ,Q ,- V ' 4 .V ,,-.,..,--.,,, ,ww W Wim 754 7 W A HZ! jr ,, WW-N' NfNN -M.. 1 4? Hockey Shoots at Playoff Goal Coach Anne O'Neill and assistant Coach Kathy Dill guided the girls hockey team to its best Kingsway record ever, eleven victories as opposed to just four defeats. This prestigious record carried the Dragonettes into the playoffs where they defeated intra-division rival Gloucester but were eventually eliminated by Palmyra. The team could not have achieved their best-ever record or playoff invitation without the determination and leadership exuded by a talent- laden group of seniors. Along with classmates Sharon Atkinson, Debbie Caltabiano, Danette Elia, and Debbie Urban, the leadership was mainly provided by co-captains Carolyn Gattuso and Tammy Sweeten. Coach Anne O'Neill thought enough of this fine crop of hockey players to state, These seniors are the finest group of athletes I have ever coached. Further evidence of individual accomplishments was shown when Danette Elia and Sharon Atkinson attained All-Conference recognition. Tammy Swee- ten and Carolyn Gattuso were given honorable mention to the same squad. It would appear as though Coaches O'Neill and Dill have many voids to fill on the 1984 squad. The LANCER staff is confident that the junior varsity players will fill these spots. The Dragonettes' season featured the defeat of Pitman for their first time in eight years and dual wins over Pennsville. Also, the season's highlight was the team qualifying for the state tournament for the fourth consecutive year. First singles belonged to Gloucester County All Star Beth Woody,' Woodend QCaptainJ, finishing the season with a smashing 13-6 record. She was also selected for All South Jersey Group I, as well as participating in the South Jersey Coaches Tournament. Second singles was claimed by junior dragonette Jennifer Barber, who had an 8-9 record and also competed in the Tri-County tournament. Sue Bredbenner performed at third singles with a a solid 7-7 record and will be returning even stronger next year. Doubling up together were Karen Bredbenner and Elise Donnelly to produce a strong 10-5 record. This duo played several tough games in the Tri-County tournament, but unfortunately they lost in the semifinals. Second doubles were Monique Owen and Angie Hoffman. This pair compiled a record of 11-3 and also participated in the Tri-County tournament. Other members who contributed to the teams efforts were Sandy Jones, Sue Yurgin, Barb Ferko, and Bonnie Pyle. Although next year's team will seek to replace three graduating seniors fBeth Woodend, Elise Donnelly, and Karen Bredbennerl, Coach Schoener is optimistic about the 1984 season. Foy, Coach Smith, Assistant Coach Harris Hoopsters Hula to After several years of rebuilding , the boys basketball team finally achieved a measure of success this year. Coach Bill Smith combined some excellent talent with dedicated coaching to lead the Dragons to their first .500 season in many years. Senior Joe Collins received recognition for his outstanding play by being named to the South Jersey Group I Team. He averaged 16.5 points per game. Derwin Fauntleroy, a junior, grabbed 12 rebounds and scored 17 points per game, as he was named to the first team of the Tri-County squad. John Diggs' aggressive rebounding attained for him second team Tri-County honors. Seniors Tyrone Foy and Bruce Jones supplied their court generalship to roundout the starting line-up. Also contributing were Ray Miller, Mike Peters and Albert Azzari. This fine array of talent secured a second place finish in the Christmas Tournament and Classic Division. Coach Smith faces a massive rebuilding program as four of his starting players are lost due to graduation. 132 500 Season A Q' . f at , xr, A 1 Qs P wa-W 4 'Z f if 155' ff I 3 if Z 5315? 34 s 1- ? A fine winning season is just what these matmen achieved. The 12-4 record is the best wrestling record ever compiled in Kingsway history, breaking the 10-6 record Coach O'Neill established in his first year coaching wrestling at Kingsway. The team was led by an outstanding group of seniors, Captains Lou Tirado, Chris DiBartolo and Todd Cleveger, along with Anthony Marino, Ray Reid, Ed Baltadonis and Gene Edmund. Lou Tirado, who has led the matmen as captain for 3 years, is the best wrestler Kingsway has ever seen. Lou was a second place finisher in the Christmas Tournament and later claimed first place victories in both District 29 and Region 8 competitions. Lou then went to the State Tournament, advancing further in States than any individual grappler from Kingsway. Lou was named to both All Gloucester County and All South Jersey wrestling squads. Chris DiBartolo received an Honorable Mention to both teams also. Future success will depend upon the junior varsity wrestlers, who were 16-1 this season. The nucleus of next year's varsity team will consist of Stan the man Atkinson, Chris Everwine, Ron Frank, George Stumm and Phil Yurgin. The LANCER staff is confident that Coaches O'Neill and Armstrong will continue their hard work to produce a fine crop of wrestlers to represent Kingsway, and we wish them the best of luck in future successes. 136 GIRLS BASKETBALL K O 'M A Woodstown 34 44 Salem 42 52 Pennsville 40 48 Collingswood 31 58 Gateway 44 58 Pennsgrove 61 63 St. James 42 40 Pitman 27 59 Delsea 49 21 Clayton 40 34 Schalick 35 47 Clearview 38 36 Gloucester 22 45 St. James 55 52 Woodstown 47 54 Pitman 49 42 Clayton 66 42 Salem 49 51 Schalick 29 66 Gloucester 51 39 Pennsville 48 22 Kneeling: R. Coach Robert Schneck's hoopsters began the - season with a squad composed mostly of underclass- men. From the girls who vied for starting positions, he rostered a team of four sophomores and one senior. Despite the preponderence of youth, the Dragonettes won nine games. Outstanding among these victories were conquests over arch rivals Pitman and Gloucester. In addition, they were competitive in most contests. The superstar of the team was Denise Liles, a Tri-County All Star with an average of 14.6 points per game and 16.8 rebounds per game. Beth Woodend and Brenda Urban were Honorable Mention to the Tri-County All Star team. Kathy Dawson, Robin Brown and Audrey Schoener rounded out the Lady Dragons. Coach Schneck is extremely enthusiastic about his team's prospects for the future, as he loses only one player to graduation. His returning letterwinners plus members of the 13-5 junior varsity squad should give Kingsway its best girls basketball team ever. 140 Girls Basketball on Rim of Success A . Swimmers Enjoy a Splashing Season An inaugural season of any sport can hardly be expected to reach lofty goals of any kind. However, the 1984 Kingsway swim team, with success increasingly indicative of the entire KRHS sports program, finished their first year with a sterling 104 record. The squad's outstanding season inspired a very optimistic coach R. Baker to say, our aquatics finished beyond even my expectations. Obviously, an excellent swim team season cannot be accomplished without excellent swimmers. Coach Baker had his fair share, including: Overall point champion, Ted Velykis C261 ptsjg Top Dual Meet point producer, Dave Pollack, and the leading lady in point production, Kelly Sully. Other immeasurable contributions were made by distance man, Mike Warner, breaststroker Greg Sampson, long-distance swimmer Hilary Hutchinson, and proficient and consistent diver Tracy Carins. Other contributions were made through the leadership provided by seniors Tom Foley and Jean Buchenhorst. Comprised mostly of underclassmen, the squad will surely miss the necessary element of experience provided by this formidable pair. With an already bright future becoming increasingly more illuminated, the Kingsway swim team seems sure to make a bigger and more dramatic splash in South Jersey's competitive swimming pools. Although the Girls softball team was successful in attaining its second consecutive winning season, their record fell short of their original goal. This was due, in large part, to an illness and injury plagued season. But, led by the dedication of all the seniors, and the enthusiasm of Tammy Sweeton, as well as the dependability of Debbie Urban, the team battled back to qualify once again, for NJSIAA tournament play. Along with this team accomplishment were the individual achievements of the graduating seniors: Tammy Sweeten, Tri County 2nd team short stop and Gloucester County 1st team designated hitter, Debbie Urban, Tri County 2nd team third base, Carol Gattuso, Tri County 1st team pitcher, Gloucester County honorable mention and All South Jersey All Conference All Group Pitcherg Danette Elia, Tri County 1st team outfield and Gloucester County honorable mention, Beth Woodend, Tri County 2nd team first base. Talent lies not only with the graduating seniors but also with a fine group of underclassmen. The nucleus of the underclassmen consists of C. Reid, C. Rival, R. Brown, L. Tyson, C. Masser and B. Urban. Due to this great expanse of talent, increased success is sure to be forthcoming next year and for years to come. 152 5 , ' ' wifi M 2 4, 4212 fi. ,lj - M. y a, JW 5 -www, www ,WWW ,W A! The 1984 Kingsway baseball team was forced to start from scratch and endure another transition year. This year, Jack Russell took the reins as head coach - the third in three years for Kingsway. Stressing the fundamental facets of baseball, coach Russell attempted to refine the pitching and fielding skills of a proficient group of hitters. One of the best of a fine group of hitters was senior Sam Saporito, who achieved 2nd team All Tri County Classic Division status with a team leading .393 batting average. Junior Keith Evans, hitting .390, was named to the 1st team All Tri-County Classic Division along with classmate Kevin Carney, who was .380 at the plate. Other contributions made in the teams effort were seniors: Andy McFadden, outfielderfpitcher, and Ed Baltidonis, 2nd and 3rd basemen. Also, junior Kian Conley displayed fine pitching talents at the mound. Other underclassmen who participated and show hope for the future are: D. Prosser, J. Vespe, R. Jarmello, A. Azzari, L. Saporito, G. Stumm, S. Casella, and R. Miller. Although it was a disappointing season for rookie head coach - Russell, he did experience a feeling of accomplishment when his team turned over two ever - so - rare triple plays. Hopefully more accomplishments will follow as coach Russell returns for his second year. Consistency should develop in his team and inevitable success should be his. 156 was 1 no PN 9 5? .:. hK 4i A if W ., .l ,,,. iw I Y-1 ,, gr ' ju ' f Gateway Clayton Buena Bridgeton Lower Cape May Pennsauken Relay 2nd K O . -- lr - ... Laurels Loom for Lady Track Stars The 1984 girls track program took its second major step toward recognition as one of South Jersey's premier track and field teams. Coming off a Tri-County Championship in 1983, they added the Gloucester County and South Jersey Group I titles to their laurels. A close second place finish to perennial State Champion Bernards H.S. points the way to even greater accomplishments next season. Individual performances highlighted a very successful 8-3 dual meet record. Seven school records were broken. Denise Liles broke four school records in 100 meter high hurdles, the 100 meter dash, the 200 meter dash, and the long jump. The 4x400 meter H6001 relay team, which includes, Tracy Cairns, Kelly Sully, Ronnie Sumiel, and Denise Liles, had the fourth best time in South Jersey. The 400 meter intermediate hurdle time was broken by Maria Bryant with a time of 1:10.2. Lisa Warner threw the javelin 124' 11 and broke the record of 118' 7 . At the Meet of Champions, Denise Liles ran for a first in the 100 and 200 meter dash and is considered the best female sprinter in New Jersey. Although these individuals accomplished much, the success of any team must come from its great depth. This quality is one that Kingsway exudes with over fifty athletes on the team. This great number of talented individuals along with the dedication and inspiration of coaches Klaszky and Fredericks assures Kingsway of many successful seasons. 160 B078 TKACK a K O i Berlin Tech. 116 15 l Gateway 84 47 Salem 74 57 Pennsville 113 18 Clayton 121 10 Woodstown 101 30 Schalick 102 29 Pitman 116 15 Clearview 122 9 Gloucester 117 14 Delsea 88 48 Pennsgrove 39 92 First row: M. Among its achievements are an 11-1 record, the Gloucester County Championship, second in South Jersey Group I, and third in All State Group I. Although the achievements of the team as a whole ranked highest, it sported four individual Gloucester County Champions: John Diggs, 110 m hurdles and long jump, Charles Boone, high jump, Greg Price, javelin, and Shawn Ruffin, 200 meters. Three of these champions went on to show their excellence at the state level. John Diggs became the state 110 m hurdle champion, he also came in second in the 100 m race. On the other hand, Shawn Ruffin finished 2nd in the 200 m race and fourth in the 100m race. While Greg Price also achieved a 4th place in the javelin throw. Along with John Diggs and Greg Price, other seniors contributing to the teams success include: Chris Hope and Dave Scott, distance runners, Otto Wilson, sprintsg Dave Bittle, Bob Schultz and Todd Clevenger, pole vault, and Ray Reid, hurdles. Frankly, the 1984 team has left a tough act to follow. However, much talent is waiting in the wings to take over for the much-hallowed services of the graduating seniors. Led by Champion Shawn Ruffin, the team should ably uphold the track team's tradition of excellence. 4.-,M , - 'nfl Y1,?'W..-fiffgqL5g5i:++...2 5 A , -.-:f25sf.fmi'?'4rfl14-lui - J I3 ,J 5 Q u Q Af M-vw X QA, A- -Q., ef L L. 4' I2 rfg-F. -' 4 N , ,syn ig V. fm 'X 4, N-.,,g. Boys Take Swing at Tournament The boys tennis team continued along its bumpy road toward success, as they qualified to compete in the State Tournament for the third consecutive year. Unfortunately an opening round loss to Woodstown eliminated them from further competition. Despite this and a sub .500 season, 7 - 10 record, the team and coach Schoener had much to be proud of in a job well done under difficult circumstances. Certainly a reason for coach Schoener to be proud was the consistent trio of seniors, who added experience and leadership to the remaining tennis racketeers. The seniors include veterans Bill Uricker and Tom Shober, along with relative newcomer Tim Racey. The balance of the team was carried by junior Ron Lerch, who attained a 10-7 record at first singles. Along with promising Ron Lerch, other bright stars on the horizon include: sophomores Steve Hurff and Bill Kendig, who were 5-3 at second doublesg junior George Driverg and freshman David Schwenk. With an eager group of underclassmen to jump in the vacated tennis shoes of the graduating seniors, Kingsway's boys tennis is bound to have a successful future.
