From our first frightened and bewildered moment to the proud excitement of graduation, many events have occurred which we will long remember. We are thankful and appreciative to those who have given us guidance and inspiration, and who were always there to lend a helping hand. We, the 1983 LANCER staff, have devoted much time and effort to capture and preserve for you those cherished memories of your high school days. On behalf of the staff, we are proud to present the 1983 edition of the LANCER to you, the students, faculty, and friends of Kingsway Regional High School. M t 5? ROBERT S. COSTILL All those associated with Kingsway Regional High School are proud and pleased with the smooth operation of our system. The man most responsible for the efficiency of this system is Mr. Robert S. Costill. Mr. Costill has been guiding the efforts of Kingsway since 1961, when he was appointed Superintendent of our school. Prior to this he had been Su- perintendent of the Swedesboro district. Other administrative experiences were gained as principal at both Pennsauken Jr. High School and Swedesboro Elementary School. Mr. Costill is a graduate of Clayton High School, class of 1939, where he lettered in football and track. A four year hitch as a coxswain in the Navy during World War II interrupted his educational pursuits. After discharge from the service, he entered Glassboro State College where he received a B.S. degree in Education. Graduate studies were completed at Temple and Rutgers Universities, where he attained a Master 's degree in Supervision and Administration. He courted and won the hand of Mildred, and the couple has had a happy marriage. They are the proud parents of Robert Jr., an electrician, and Da- vid, a recent graduate of the State Police Academy. He has one grandson, Kyle David. Mr. Costill is fond of fishing, is an avid spectator at most of our sporting events, and can often be found deep in the pages of a recent novel. He is currently a member, and past president, of the Gloucester County Superintendent Association, president of the Gloucester County Audio- Visual Commission, a member of the American Association of School Administrators, and has served as chairman of four high school evaluation committees for the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools. Mr. Costill says, I am most proud of the general demeanor of Kingsway students and of the accomplishments of the many graduates who have attained success in life, and made contributions to their communities. He also indicated that he has satisfaction in the accreditation of the school by the Middle States, and the superior reputation of Kingsway High School in educational circles. He gives credit for these accomplishments to the students, parents, staff, faculty and the Kingsway community as a whole. In light of all of the dedicated efforts of Mr. Costill, we the staff, flnd it an honor to be able to dedicate the 1983 LANCER to Mr. Robert Costill. 4 , N x N 'Q' 41 a - 5:J 'c-514 fi f w ,,,, Q!! Her talents are many faceted, and she has over the years been willing to help in any activity where she was needed. She has been in the fore front ofthe band, imparting her expertise to the girls for their Showtime presentations. When not busy on the football field, she tracks to the softball diamond where she capably runs the softball program. In addition, she is the president of the Kingsway Education Associ- ation and an officer in the New Jersey Education Association. She efficiently planned our fund raisers and meticulously maintained our records. She set the stage for our Prom, and this year has coordinated the long-term arrangements for the Florida trip. It is with sincere gratitude that we thank you, Marianne Kisela, for being a friend and inspiration to us all. ANDREW MORITZ Although it seems like only yesterday six years have passed since a group of bewildered seventh graders were taken in hand and guided toward a successful high school career. Mr. Moritz, affectionately known as Doc , assumed the task of being advisor to the Class of 1983. Along the way he has performed many services for us. Our Homecom- ing floats, though not generally prize winners, offered many hours of fun. His jovial manner made all of our events unforgettable ones. Not to be forgotten was the great time enjoyed during the Florida trip. As we finish our high school years, we can pause and reflect upon the many hours of dedicated service given by Mr. Moritz. We hereby formal- ly wish to offer some measurement of appreciation to him. With grateful thanks. The Class of 1983. GAGE The spirit of friendliness and dedication-such a man is Quentin R. Gage. Born in Morris, N .Y., Quint has been a familiar face at Kingsway for the past twenty years. In his early Kingsway years, coaches sought out Quint to be their chauffeur because of his generous services. In recent years, he has been the helping hand to students and faculty alike. We wish Mr. Gage and his wife, Engeborg success in finding happiness in Quint 's retirement. 15 We will certainly miss Quint at the home of the Dragon. On this battle ground is fought the greatest football wars in South Jersey. At these football games, the cheerleaders strive to devel- op the spirit needed to bring forth victory. Every day before a home game, a pep rally is given. The gym is filled with spirit and pride as the students let their emotions take over. With the support of the band, the cheerleaders arouse the crowd with their favorite chants like, Let's Get Fired Up! Cheerleading is a worthwhile activity that requires skill and hard work. Great preparation is necessary in order to have a successful season all around. Once again in '82, the cheerleaders were out boost- ing morale among the students. Under the direction of advisor Lisa Katurakes and captain Danita Harris, the cheerleaders worked hard to prepare for a successful season. To open the season, the cheerleaders sponsored a Kick-off dance. Other activities of the cheerleaders are preparing for decorating the halls and the boy's locker room. After all pep rallies, they provide candy and baked goodies to the football players. On Thanksgiving Day, the cheerleaders sponsored Parents Day in honor of the senior football players and their parents. An innovation this year was at the open- ing game when the cheerleaders released hundreds of colorful balloons, carrying messages far and wide. One response came from as far away as Connecticut. All in all the girls enjoyed a successful season of cheerleading presentations. They would like to thank all the cheering spectators whose rousing response added gusto to our games. 54 Cheerleaders '82: L. Ferko, R Jenkins, A. Stackhouse, D. Harris fCaptainJ, C. Spanos, I. Band Wins Fans And Trophie The Kingsway Dragon Band completed a successful Tournament of Bands season with two first place finishes, three seconds, a third and a seventh in direct competition with top-flight eastern area bands. On October lst, they opened their season with a strong performance at Clearview that gained a second place trophy. On the 8th, the Dragons repeated their second place finish in a tournament at Ridley H.S. A rain- marred Triton competition saw a disappointing third place finish. A week later, the weather and the performance improved as the band rebounded to second place. The next competition at Williamstown H.S. saw the band score a school record number of points as The F amily marched off with first place honors. On October 23rd, the band reached the epitome of success as they took flrst place honors and ALSO captured trophies for Best Band Fronts , Best Music , and Best Drum Majors . A fitting climax to a perfect season. In street competition, the Dragons placed 2nd in the Millville Christmas parade. The Family missed the flrst place honors by a hundreth of a point. The band also gave crowd pleasing performances in parades at Woodbury, Salem, Wildwood and Swedesboro. The grand finale of the activities for the Band Family was the annual band trip, this year to Williamsburg-Busch Gardens Music Festival in Newport News, VA on the 20th and 21st of May. Against outstanding com- petition, the band walked off with second place honors. The Indoor Guard, having competed only once during the season, took a second place in their competition. Drum Major Scott Brickner and Major- ette Carol Rival captured high scores, Excellent ratings and flrst place trophies in their respective individual competitions. Mr. Eitel and Ms. Klsela will dearly miss the departing seniors. The band directors will find it difficult to replace Brass Captain Doug F rank, Wood- wind Captain Dawn Ogren and senior squad members Toni D'Annibale, Georgia Kokos and Sherry Owen, Percussion Captains Sam Grasso and Rick Sparks and squad members Luanne Balestrucci and June Schaub, Flag Corp Captain Kim Hudson and squad members Tina Doms, Barbara Gillan, Kim Warner and Barb Zammarrelli, Rifle Captain Darlene Sully, Majorettes Terri Smith, Trish Thompson and their Captain Kathy Hamp- ton, and Feature Twirler Lisa Justice. Coach Tony Barchuck and the rest of the Dragons had been waiting for this day with great optimism since Thanksgiving 1981. As they charged onto the practice field, there was an atmosphere never before felt at Kingsway. Unity and enthusiasm reigned, and a family feeling devel- oped. As they worked through subsequent practices, through grueling double sessions, one goal and one thought was in their minds- The Magic 12 . Twelve points were needed to be eligible for the South Jersey Championship playoffs. The first two points came with an easy victory over Clayton, 34-6. The following week the score was matched in a victory over Pitman. On October 9th, the defending Tri-County champs invaded Dragon territory with expecta- tions of victory. In a defensive struggle until the last minutes of play, Kingsway prevailed when Mike Mellon gathered in an errant Eagle pass to set up the winning score. Six points toward The Magic 12 had been garnered. The following week was a complete let down, as the Dragons were doused by Salem. In the following weeks, they clobbered Gloucester and shamed Schalick in an overwhelming Homecoming victory. In a thrilling finish at Woodstown, the Dragons emerged victorious to se- cure The Magic 12 points. In another one-sided fray, Barchuck's men pummeled Pennsgrove with a convincing victory. John Diggs completed a great season when he established a new school record of 1,042 yards rushing. Outstanding performances were turned in all season by John Diggs with super runs, Tracey Thomas, with superb blocking and tackling, Joe Rizzi, with slashing running, Mike Mellon, with scintallating interceptions, concrete Ken Hunt anchoring the lines, Keith Elder, in the center of the battles, and the rest of the Dragon stalwarts contributing outstanding plays throughout the season. The graduating players leave their winning tradition in good hands. We are sure that the best yet record of 7-2 will be bettered next year. Coaches: Coach M. Klaszky, Coach R. O'Neill, Coach S. Bergin's Harriers Have Best Season Ever As the 1982 cross country season began, the Dragons fielded a team of fifteen, nine veterans and six newcomers. Led by senior Co-Captains Chip Baker and Joanne Mihlebach and paced by newcomers Mark Bohn and Joe Collins, the Dragons raced to a record of ten wins and six losses, as well as a second place finish in the Tri-County Conference Championship meet. The teams ten victories equals a school mark for Kingsway Cross Country, and the second place Tri-County finish was the Dragon's best ever. This '82 Dragon squad ran well together. Often, thirty seconds or less sepa- rated Kingsway's top five runners. This pack was the key to a successful campaign. Sophomore Mark Bohn was the teams number one runner. He was contin- ually pressed by junior Joe Collins. The heart of the team was composed of seniors Chip Baker, John Harmon, Ken Kolodziejski and Joanne Mihlebach. Joining them were juniors Sam Saporito, Bruce Jones and Sophomores Don Pyle and John Mauger. Joanne Mihlebach completed an illustrious cross country career with a second place finish in the Gloucester County Championship meet, a fourth place finish in the South Jersey Open, and a fourth place finish in the South Jersey Group I Championship. Joanne was also selected an area all star for the third consecutive year. Although the graduating seniors will be missed, Coach Bergin is optimistic about next season. With returning varsity veterans Mark Bohn, Joe Collins, Don Pyle, Bruce Jones, Sam Saparito, and John Manger, along with the devel- oping talents of freshmen Steve Miller and Steve Scott, the Dragons already have the nucleus of a fine team. Keep this squad together, add a few promising newcomers, and the future of Kingsway cross country appears bright. Soccer Gets Off on Rajczy Foot The year 1982 will long be remembered as the inaugural year for soccer at Kingsway Regional. Newly appointed head coach, John Rajczy, faced the task of preparing his lads for a season of twelve games against teams which had been estab- lished for years. The turn out for the soccer squad was outstanding with thirty-six boys reporting on opening day and with twenty-six remaining for the entire season. The nucleus of the team was composed of freshmen and sophomore boys some with consid- erable experience. The nucleus will be the heart of next year 's varsityyteam. Next year 's team will have the honor of playing on the Dragon's newly constructed home field. This year 's squad compiled a record of seven victories against only five losses. This was a commendable performance for our new sports program. We wish the returning players much luck for their first varsity season in 1983. 68 B. West, T. Suessmuth, G. After hot September prac- tices, the team went into the season with a very posi- tive attitude knowing that they had great potential. Speedy Danette Elia was expected to be a standout performer along with returning South Jersey All Star Valerie Muntz. Great things were also expected of re- turning veterans, Audrey Bortner, Margo Engle, Tammy Sweeten and Carol Gattuso. Val Muntz, Margo Engle and Audrey Bortner were honored by being selected Tri-Captains of the team. After tying the first scrimmage and winning the next, the team kicked off the official season with a series of disappointing defeats. A complete turnaround came after the Gloucester game when the girls began a winning streak, winning five and tying one of the re- maining eight games. This gave the team a record of 5- 5-1 which qualified them for the state championship tournament. In a disheartening tournament game, the girls lost one to nothing by a disputed last minute goal. Other senior standouts on the team were Sheri Jen- kins, Beth Sandberg and Phyllis Husted. Underclass- men contributors were Sharon Atkinson, Debbie Ur- ban, Debbie Caltabiano, Lisa Warner and Jenny Horner. With many returning varsity performers and the ad- dition ofcandidates from Cathy Dill 's very successful 7- 2-1 J.V. team, hockey looks promising for next year. wh 211.551 Sgiggw f, L fi , ,AW,,,.W,, ,.1,,- V --.M 'ff' ,W 05,5 .1 ,.,. ,,, Z' 4 , wwf. Of the 12 girls reporting for the team, there was only one senior, Arlene Brogan, on the squad. However, the 11 underclass- men possessed superior skills, and throughout the season, they further developed these skills. The result was the attainment of the .500 season, with the final record being 8 wins against 7 losses. The Tri-County victories gave the team a fourth place finish in the League standings. It also enabled the team to par- ticipate in the State Championship Tennis Tournament. Smashing singles performances were exhibited by Theresa Diaz with a 9-6 record, Beth Woodend at 10-5, and Arlene Brogan also awinning record of 9-6. Jennifer Barber and Sue Bredbenner teamed up at first doubles for a 6 and 7 record. Karen Bredbenner teamed with Monique Owen to secure a 7-5 record at second doubles. Jennifer Jenkins was the first alternate and garnered a 2-2 record. Other people who contributed to the team effort were Sandy Jones, Angie Hoffman, Barbara Ferko, and Sue Yurgin. Jones Team Develops Late Power on Court 132 Like the proverbial steamroller which is hard to get started, however once started, rolls over everything, the 1982-83 boys hardwood agrega- tion had a slow start, but a very solid finish. This was shown as the team won only two conference games during the first half of the season but ral- lied to defeat Pennsville, Pennsgrove, and scored an upset over highly regarded Gloucester in the second half of the season. In spite of the second half heroics, the Dragons missed the playoffs by one game. The only senior on the team was Tracy Thomas. Since he was the high scorer and top rebounder, Tracy was a vital member of Coach Smith 's team and will be sorely missed next year. With the remaining members of the team returning, Coach Smith looks forward to an exciting season next year. 1' SS.- U5 U3 X f S: Y 1 ? 3 5 5 Standing: B. Stumm, J. Holmes, Coach R. O'Neill,T. A large crop of willing volunteers were anxious to fill the void left by those seniors. Captains Warren Morgan and Lou Tirado, along with Chris DiBartolo, seemed to be the greatest assets to the matmen. Chris, 15-5, and Lou 22-3-1, proved this as they both were first place finishers in the Christmas Tourna- ment. At the District 29 Tournament, DiBartolo and Morgan each claimed a fourth place. Tirado placed an impressive second and went on to vie in the Regionals the following week. The team as awhole finished fifth in District 29. Coach O'Neill felt that Steve Roane and Gene Edmund showed much im- provement over last year. Todd Clevenger and Sam Siglow both had a good year, even though Siglow had a slow start. Next year nine returning lettermen will add great depth and strength to the wrestling program. In addition, a newly initiated midget wrestling program will help us in the future to produce quality wrestlers. Coaches O'Neill and Armstrong will develop the talents of these young grapplers into masters of the mats. This years record of 6-ll-1 did not reach the desired goal of ll wins. There- fore, Coach O'Neill states, 'LWe will work harder than we ever did before throughout next year to obtain our goal of a great and winning season. The editorial staff is enthused with the winning attitude abounding in all sports at Kingsway and hope that Coach O'Neill's goals for a winning season will be reached. wi wiv I A aus? 4 SCHEDULE Paul VI Delran Clearview Riverside Pennsville Williamstown Woodbury Cumberland Salem Schalick Washington Twp Berlin Tech. The Lady Dragons fought youth and inexperience as well as other teams throughout the 1982-83 season. With a starting line-up that, at times included as many as three freshmen, Coach Schneck accom- plished the near impossible by being competitive in most games. The enthusiasm and heart of the girls was shown in their unceasing efforts in all games. Their excellent progress was shown as they won three of their four final games. The sole senior of the squad, Karen Dawson, will be greatly missed, but returning veterans will provide the experience that our basket- ball teams have lacked in the past. Outstanding returning players include Beth Woodend, Audrey Schoener, Denise Liles, Chris Beatty, and Brenda Urban. Coach Au- drey Gray 's junior varsity squad should provide the few players need- ed to round out a competitive 1983-84 team. 140 if gf 5 -...J E5 Nu--4 if '!'Ei. 1 X.. al -if l Yr ' mink' .-- ' MXH!! Clayton Gloucester Schalick St. James Delsea Salem Woodstown Clayton Pitman Pennsville Gloucester Penns Grove Penns Grove Schalick Woodstown Delsea Salem Pennsville Pitman Burlington Woodbury 148 Coaches Marianne Kisela and Anne O'Neill greeted a host of softball candidates this spring with expectations of a fine season. The major sour note of the season was the innumerable rainouts early in the season. However, once the rains were past, the season began to jell for the girls, and the team began to make their presence known in Tri-County. On April 21st, the dynamic force of Kingsway was felt as the Lady Dragons beat Delsea for the first time ever. Continuing their fine efforts, the team went on to, on May 4th, hand league- leading Pennsville a defeat. Other important triumphs were gained throughout the season to enable the team to qualify for the State Championship Tourna- ment. The team was led by Carol Gattuso on the mound and Tammy Sweeten at the bat. Danette Elia waited out 28 bases on balls and then stole a league-leading 36 bases. Coach Marianne Kisela successfully piloted her team to the South Jersey finals this year. However, in a thrilling game held at Bethel Mill Park, the Dragons dropped an extra-inning battle to the Thundering Herd of Woodbury. The three seniors on the squad will be greatly missed. Outfield- ers Barb Gillan and Rita Falcone were each truly dependable. Second baseman Kathy Hampton, a two year veteran, showed steady improvement. Junior Debbie Urban was named All Tri- County Honorable Mention for her efforts. Tammy Sweeten and Carol Gattuso were named to Gloucester County First Team and also Tri-County 2nd Team along with juniors Beth Woodend and Danette Elia. Coach Kisela looks forward to an even bigger and brighter season next year. . A String Of T nnis Victorie Most teams begin a season with the goal of a .500 season. This year 's team had a very successful season as they im- proved their record to 11-6. Too much credit can not be given to John Walker who turned in the most victorious record of all team members as he completed the season with an overall record of 14-3. Ken Kolodziejski and Ron Lerch at lst doubles scored an 8- 5 record and the two Bill 's, Uricher and Ward, teamed up at second doubles for a 7-4 record. These great performances led the squad to its Victorious season. Bryan Kendig was impressive at 1st singles as he faced many of the outstanding tennis players in South Jersey Bry- an was an inspirational leader of the team and his five victo- ries contributed greatly to our cause. Brad Talley, the other senior standout, who played at sec- ond singles, scored seven triumphs in our team's quest. The team ended its season with a rush as they had nine winning outings in their 12 final matches. The highlight of the season was a sensational success over Delsea after having lost to them V2 to 41!2 in an earlier match. Their outstanding record made them eligible to compete in the New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association Tournament. Unfortunately, Glassboro emerged as the win- ner of the playoff match. Coach Schoener is going to have to dig deep into next year 's candidates in order to replace Bryan, Brad and John at lst, 2nd, and 3rd singles. However, optimism reigns and we look forward to the 1984 campaign. Baseball Stops Short of Victory The 1983 Dragon Baseball team, after winning the Tri-County Title last year, went through a year of transition under new coach Bill Stonis, winning only four while losing 14. After the first four games, the team showed more improvement than was expected from coach Stonis when they won two of their first four games. Then came the downfall, winning only two of their next 14 games. Over the span of a long and frustrating season the Dragons beat Clayton, Schalick, who played in the tournaments, Gloucester, and a thrilling win over Penns Grove, knocking them out of the tournament race. Those who had good seasons were Senior Mike Mellon, stealing 23 bases among the top in the conference, sophomore Kian Con- ley Whose record doesn't show how well he pitched, and sopho- more Keith Evans, whose average was in the high .300 's. Seniors Frank Casella and Ed Lord also contributed along the way and helped this young team of sophomores to gain the experience necessary for their future Kingsway years. Underclassmen who did well for the Dragons and who should contribute greatly to Coach Stonis' 84 campaign are John Vespe, catcher, Ray Miller and Rich J armello, moundsmen, Sam Sapor- ito, Andy McFadden, Ed Baltadonis, infielders, and Todd Cle- venger, Jim Emrick, Kevin Carney in the outer gardens. 156 5 Q 15. fr , .. ,g., --. Gattuso, L. Tumbelty, J. Shute. Diggs Hurdles All Foes As the culmination of an outstanding year, John Diggs took the State Championship in the 100m. high hurdles. His time of 14.2 in an earlier meet had established a new school record for John. His efforts led the war for Coach O'Neill's tracksters as the team finished with a record of 11 victories against only 2 defeats. This was the best record ever for a Kingsway track team, keeping intact the tradition of track as being a winning sport at K.R.H.S. John also turned in superlative performances in the shot put, 100m. dash and long jump. Dave Bittle was one of the outstanding pole vaulters in the Tri-County and we forecast that next year Dave will break the school record in this event. Charles Boone excelled in the high jump as evidenced by his gaining the gold in the Tri-County Conference Championship Meet. In the same meet, Derwin Fauntleroy struck paydirt with a silver medal. Greg Price, Dave Bittle and the mile relay team composed of Otto Wilson, Derwin, Charles and Ed Johns all received bronze medals. Greg's was in the javelin, and Dave's was in the pole vault, and Otto, John and Mark Bohn scored 2 points a piece in the 400, long jump, and 1600m. runs. Medal winners in the Gloucester County Championships were John Diggs Q4 medals, H.H., shot put, l00m. dash, and long jump J, Charles Boone fhigh jumpj and Derwin Fauntleroy fI.H.j Outstanding highlights of the season occurred first, in the Schalick and Berlin Tech. meets when Kingsway won every event, and second when John Diggs, Otto Wilson, Charles Boone and Mark Bohn joined the 100 Point Club as they each scored more than 100 points this season. Coaches O'Neill and Bergin state that they can hardly wait for the '84 campaign as their big point scorers are all underclassmen. Penns- grove's duel meet victory skein should be ended by the Dragons next year. f XL.., mL'A' ' 4, sw L iii i W1 W.- X - .4-.4-. Liles Leads Lady Dragons At the beginning of the season, everyone knew that Kingsway was going to have a freshman sensation on the Girls Track team. Denise Liles had performed well during the summer when she won medals in the Jesse Owens Junior Olympics. Denise lived up to all expectations as she became the first Kingsway athlete and probably the first state freshman athlete to win three gold state championship medals. Head Coach Mike Klaszky along with first year assistant coach Andy Moritz helped lead the girls to an undefeated Tri-County season C4-OJ and a 5-4 overall record. This was the second consecutive year that the Lady Dragons have been undefeated and hold the mythical Tri-County Championship. In a season marred by unceasing inclement weather, many great efforts were turned in by Dragonette runners. It was a case of the young and old in '83 girls track. Charter members Joanne Mihlebach, Audrey Bortner, and Val Muntz teamed with seniors Jenny Kemp and Maureen Revelas to provide outstanding leadership for a team dominated by underclassmen. Freshman Denise Liles led the underclassmen with the previously mentioned efforts in the sprint events. Other important team members include Debbie Caltabiano, Sue Stiehl, Amy DuBois, Veronica Kuchler, Amy Weisman, Tracy Cairns, Jeanette Johnson, Mary Sebas- . Va.,-. . tiani, Kelly Sully and Kim Green. The Lady Dragons dominated the Tri-County Girls Championship Meet placing in almost every event. They also took 4th place at the Gloucester County Meet, a 4th in the South Jersey Championships, and placed 2nd in the State Championship meet. Denise Liles left her mark as a South Jersey and State Champion in the 100m., 200m., and 100m. hurdles. Joanne placed 3rd in the 1600 and 3200 at the South Jersey Meet with new school records and placed 5th in the 3200 at States. Jenny Kemp also went to States after placing 4th in the discus at the South Jersey Championship. ' The 5 departing seniors will certainly be missed next year, but with the abun- dance of outstanding youthful talent on display on the cinderpaths this year, the 1984 Lady Dragon tracksters should be a team to reckon with in South Jersey track circles next year.
