They mature and grow green and vibrant in the summer. In the fall, they burst into a blaze of color. And in the winter, they lie dormant awaiting the renewal of life. So it is with our lives. . .we too go through various changes that lead through the cycle of life. We bloom with knowledge, we mature with experience, we shed our adolescence, and assume the responsibilities of adulthood. On a smaller scale we have already undergone a part of this life cycle. We have made important decisions, ridding ourselves of old habits and adding new values to our lives. A major part of our adolescence has been spent within the walls of Kingsway, and we have made ourselves a part of it's tradition. It is an irreplaceable part of our lives, one which we will always treasure. This yearbook portrays a year of our Kingsway experiences. +1--+-- J .-y-- iw-+,i , -.. ,.... Marks Through the years, many teachers have come and gone, but Mr. Marks has remained a solid figure here at Kingsway. Although it may seem as if Mr. Marks has been teaching all his adult life, he actually has a versatility that expands far beyond his teaching expertise. He began his diversified career working at a soda fountain at the age of 15. He held down several other j obs before landing in the United States Army, serving as Sergeant Maj or in Europe during World War II. After spending three years in the Army, he attended five colleges, ending with Rutgers, Where he earned his masters degree, and was accepted into the doctorate program. He began his teaching career at Swedesboro High and has spent 31 years in this district. He also served as head teacher until the position was eliminated at Kingsway. During this time, he was head coach of a number of sports, among them 33 varsity teams. The track team under Mr. Marks' direction twice won the South Jersey Group I Championship, one of which was the first boy's championship ever to be won by Kingsway. He received the Coach ofthe Year award for his outstanding coaching ofthe 1952-53 basketball team. In addition, he also coached the Cross Country team for 12 years. In 1981, he was inducted into the South Jersey Coaches Association Hall of Fame. Having been the yearbook advisor for 20 years, Mr. Marks has proven how dedicated he could be for the good of his students. Along with his good humor and charm, Mr. Marks is generous to a fault. The long hours that he put into working on the yearbook are too many to be counted. His honesty makes him comfortable to work with, and his manners are never lacking. He is chivalrous -- truly to be called a modern day knight. We hereby dedicate the 1982 yearbook to him. Francis H. The 1981 Dragons began this year's season striving to better last year's record and with aspirations of gaining the Tri-County crown. Supported by the enthusiastic fans who crowded the stadium every week, the Dragons thrilled their followers with a 6-2-l record, the best ever at K.R.H.S. On offense, the Dragons presented a balanced attack featuring Burlingame's pin-point passing, agile Avsec's running, and bruising blocks supplied by the offensive line. The defense was awesome each week, recording three shut- outs, and holding the other opponents to low scores. Many of Barchuck's warriors were honored by being selected as outstandingiin their positions. Chris Avsec and Greg Burlingame were chosen as first teams Tri-County and South Jersey Group I All-Stars. Greg received additional recognition by being named to the All South Jersey and All-Delaware Valley first teams. Mark Lail was named to the first team Tri-County All-Stars. Joe Dellaquilla won positions on Tri-County and South Jersey second teams. Tom Edmund and Mike Brown won recognition by their selection on the Tri-County All-Star team. Hockey akes Steps F orward' At 7:30 a.m. on September first the team's initial practice season vegan. Head coach Anne Ward and assistants Mrs. Dill and Miss Lovelace were pleased that over I5 newcomers were present. Joining these rookies were seasoned veterans, one senior, three juniors and five sophmores. The coaches knew that improving skills and learning to play as a team would be high on their agenda of achievements. After a week of strenuous workouts that polished their skills, the young team faced their first scrimmage. Although the scrimmage was lost, the coaches, along with co-captains Kathy Crispin and Val Muntz, were pleased by the perserverance and positive attitudes of the team. After losing their first two regular season games, the girls spirits were uplifted by a I-0 victory over Penns Grove. The winning goal was tallied by Margo Engle. They gained their second win by out-scoring Clayton for a 2-I win. Much effort and enthusiasm was exerted by the Dragon team in every game. The Dragonettes were not pleased with their final record, 2-10, but they were impressed by the efforts and the improvements made by each player and the team as a whole. The coaches were also pleased that a full Junior Varsity team was formed, which will enable the hockey team to have valuable depth which will enhance next year's team. Junior co-captain, Val Muntz, represented Kingsway as Honorable Mention to the Tri-County All-Star Team. Other outstanding team members were Danette Elia, Tammy Sweeten, Carol Gattuso, Audrey Bortner, Margo Engle, Debbie Urban, Phyllis Husted, Beth Sandberg, Carrie Simpson, and Kathy Crispin. Senior co-captain Kathy Crispin and Senior Carrie Simpson, who had graced the team with their poise and maturity, wish the best of luck to the team next season. The season featured two wins each over Delsea, Clearview, St. James, Salem and Pennsville. It is the first time in five years that the girls had defeated Pennsville. The mainstays ofthe team were third singles sophomore Theresa Diaz and first doubles seniors Loraine Alberto and Cindi Ferko. First singles senior Sue Pyle had a fine season with close matches against Pitman and Pennsville. Second singles was Wien DeStafeno. Both Sue Pyle and Wien DeStafeno are four year varsity players. Second doubles were sophomore Arlene Brogan and Beth Woodend. The season's highlight was the teams qualifying for the state tournament for the second consecu- tive year. Unfortunately, they met powerful Audubon in the first round of play and lost a hard fought match. The season ended with a 10-7 record, of which Coach Schoener is very proud. He looks to Theresa Diaz and Beth Woodend to provide the nucleus of the singles next year, and with hard work they should be among the best players in Tri-County. With four graduating seniors, many key spots on the team are left open, but Coach Schoener still feels optimistic about next year's season. T Second row: S. Pyle, W. DeStafeno, A. Brogan, B. However, on the first practice Coach Bergin faced a number of problems, for only ten prospective runners appeared. As a result of the lack of depth, the team struggled through a 6-9 season. The bright star of the season was JoAnne Mihlebach, who consistently placed among the top scorers in dual meets, and was absolutely outstanding in championship races. Her peak performance came in the South Jersey championships when JoAnne raced to first place and the gold medal. Captain Bill Horner was the leader of the squad both in practice and meets. John Sandy, a second year performer, was enjoying a fine season until sidelined by an injury. Another second year harrier was Bob O'Leary who contributed to the overall team effort. The junior class provided four emerging stars for Coach Bergin, Jim Emerick, Chip Baker, John Harmon and Ken Kolodziejski, who gained valuable experience for the '82 season. Sophomore Sam Saporito and freshman Don Pyle rounded out Coach Bergin's squad. Inasmuch as the majority ofthe squad consisted of underclass- men, things bode well for the next year. JoAnne Mihlebach will be an inspiration to the men of the team and will surely lead the squad to a winning record. Coach Bergin and Captain Horner. 26 -S. Miss Peifer's cheerful disposition encouraged us to work harder and spend more time working for the good ofour class. Her fresh enthusiasm inspired us and led us to build a successful homecoming float and to be triumphant in the Powder Puff. She was instrumental in planning our senior trip to Florida and the various other activities, such as the graduation exercises. Miss Peifer's assistance was invaluable as she capably handled our class during a very important time. To her we offer our sincere gratitude for her devoted efforts on our behalf. l Thomas K. Gruber At the beginning of our freshman year, Mr. Thomas Gruber agreed to assume the responsibility of advising our class--the Class of '82. During the two previous years, we had been passed through the hands of four advisors, giving us a feeling of instability. Mr. Gruber took over with a firm and steady hand, giving us a feeling of security. His charisma and good humor made working with him enjoyable. His perserverence led each of us to become more involved in class activities and instilled within us a feeling of pride. As a result, our senior year has been marked by several accomplish- ments. Among them are the 1981 first place Homecoming float, the Senior Powder Puff victory, and the whitewashing of the faculty hockey team. His skillful organization helped us sponsor a successful Prom, and a fabulous senior trip. We take this opportunity to offer our formal appreciation and grateful thanks to Mr. Gruber for his service as advisor to the class of 1982. -ff IX dl lu' A 59 Ili' JL , P xii ,fx X I, 75 94 fl xig 71x Nif xx -XL vs xi! ,lx .iff I - x JL 7 i Q 4 XIX iff ff xl, ,AIX ,Alf if v x I y ,IQ if .Ax SENI R DAVID DOUGLAS DUPPER Dupe S Swedesboro 'gWell . . .three year prexy of our class. . .perpetrator of the MUSK incident. . .March 19, 1981. . .tracks down females.. . cheered the worms on. . .earns his bread at the Inn . . .a major contribution to the 81'l award winning float. . . buzzes around with Fred, Shawn, Lew, John and C.S. . . capricious in his Capri. . .fond of flirting. . .cooking up a great future. '5. .bf:Je2J.Nr'x.... -'rf r- r-, Band Marches on With a Better Stride Ending last year on an impressive note by winning first place at The Big Apple Music Festival in New York, the Dragon Marching Band anticipated a successful marching season in 1981-1982. Besides providing half-time and pre-game entertainment at all the football games, the band competed in seven tournaments of band field show competitions in New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Delaware. ln their second season of competition, the band impressively took one third place, two second places and scored first place at Chichester High School in Chester, Pennsylvania. Participating in the annual Millville Christmas Parade, this year's only parade competition, the unit finished with second place honors. The marching band had its grand finale in May when it marched in the Ocean City, Maryland Festival of Music. As usual the comradeship ofthe band members enabled the band to enjoy a great experience. Happiness and sadness prevailed asjoyful band members realized that this was the last trip they would take with many graduating seniors. We are sure that the band will stride offto higher finishes in next year's competitions and that they will continue their tradition of pride and performance. 66 4 'Q V i ' 3 - W W M f , ' ,MW WL, X , f i msn- New 5 1 f f W0 ,ffvilillf f fa A ill ,W ' 9, Nix ' WM ,Q Y . 1 ff 7 1 N N X A I . x- l ' :XY- KJ 'I i ix f' W I 'ff w h ,151 1, 0, J V n an ffl ? 1 til ,Q ' . Dupper, D. Urbam, C. Gattuso, Coach Schneck KNEELING: A. Schoener, T. Rogers, M. Engle, W. Diggs, B. Woodend. Coach Schneck, in his freshman year as a head-coach at Kingsway, instituted a basketball program designed to develop the talents of young, inexperienced players. He accented the positive elements of one-on-one defense and introduced some motion offenses. Although much more progress is needed in offensive work, the man to man defense was polished to a point where the Dragon maids stymied the potent offenses of our opponents. Although the team managed by one victory, a close 40-39 triumph over Delsea, an espirit-de-corps was developed among the girls. Hopefully, this spirit will grow, as it did on the gridiron, until it fires a winner on the court. The season ended on a bright note as seniors Diane Dupper and Wein DeStafeno were voted to Honorable Mention in both Tri-County and South Jersey All-Star Teams. Providing fuel for the future Dragon-fire were Winnie Diggs, Beth Woodend, Sharon Atkinson, and Margo Engle. This nucleus of next yearls varsity hopefully will provide us with more hardwood victories. 96 is 65. . xx A 540 N...-' if ,NJ W' 4 .. sep., :iii fl SWF K' X V., rf ' C X 3 Clearview Delsea Schalick Pennsville Pitman Pennsgrove Clayton Salem Gloucester Woodstown Delsea Schalick Pennsville Pitman Pennsgrove Clayton Salem Gloucester Woodstown N A BOYS BASKETBALL K O Clearview 58 54 St. James 43 65 Delsea 44 64 Schalick 57 74 W. Diggs Hard Times on the Hardwoods The Kingsway Dragons basketball season did not live up to preseason hopes and expectations. Though there were sporadic bright spots to the teams performance, their actions did not pick up that needed flow. Hard work by the players and continual guidance by Coach Bill Smith attempted to turn up the catalyst which would spark the much needed turn around--but they came up empty handed. The nucleus of the boys basketball squad was Mark Lail, Joe Jones, Kevin Fauntleroy, Joe Collins, Robbie Norman, and Tracey Thomas. The most consistent of this six was Mark Lail and thus his selection as Honorable Mention to the Tri-County All-Star Team came as no surprise. Kevin Fauntleroy was also honored by the Tri-County. Senior Joe J ones contributed offensive punch under the boards. Junior Tracey Thomas displayed great improvement and shows great promise for next year. Sophomore Joe Collins' aggressive style bodes well for the future, while Robbie Norman's ball-handling expertise provided the ball movement for our team. Though Kingsway was unable to get rolling this year, and though the height advantage from Mark Lail, Joe Jones and Kevin Fauntleroy will not be back next year, the prospects look good due to the underclass performances witnessed this year on both the varsity and junior varsity levels. 100 i 1 JU XHQW f 2? 31 '15 f W A E B5 I: 2 l 2 4 9 is , , Z , L y 5 ,N W, A aw - W '6 fr W - ia., ,f, ,,, A5 4 ,,1V2 5365 '1' 44 N W 1 ? f 0. i 1 Q s I NS-....., egxa fi, E5 in x 9 9 5 ' E I- 7 41 B q. Champs Prevail in District Championshqas This yearis Dragon wrestling season had many exciting moments which have given great expectations for the upcoming years. After last yearls record of 4-l 2, coach O'Neil1 felt that improvement was definitely in store for his wrestlers. This improvement did come about with a final record of 8-9. The three captains of this year's team shared the most glory. Senior Tom Edmund 1heavyweight1 finished 22-2-O with 14 pins. Edmund also was the Christmas Tournament's Champion and achieved a third place finish in the Districts. Another senior, Bob O'Leary 11411, and Lou Tirado 11351, a sophomore, both had records of 22-1-1. Each obtained District Championships in their respective weight classes. O'Leary was the Christmas Tournament Champion and Tirado finished second. The other senior on the team, Dave Eason, did a fine job at 188 after dropping much weight since the previous season. These wrestlers, along with the rest of the team, enabled the Dragons to finish fourth in a field of eleven teams in the District 31 competition. Adding to this seasons success is Mr. O'Neil1's outlook for next year. With the team losing only three seniors to graduation, and with a J.V. record of 16-1 , the Kingsway wrestlers look like they are well on their way to a better season. Leading the team next year will be this year's varsity leter winners Chris Dibartolo 11011 Anthony Marino 11081 Sam Saporito 11221 Todd Clevenger 11291, Steve Banff 11581, and Gene Edmund 11701 all of whom are sophomores, Steve Roane 11151, the lone freshman, and two juniors, Warren Morgan 11481 and Lou Tirano 11351. Baseball A t It Best The Diamond Dragons of l982, under the direction of Head Coach Bill Crane, began the season determined to improve on last year's record establishing season of seventeen wins against eight losses. With seven of last year's starting nine returning and with twelve varsity letter winners and eleven senior veterans, the Dragons looked forward to an exceptionally successful season. Our team surpassed last year's record by winning nineteen games and droppingjust four, the best baseball record in KRHS history. We established respect throughout the state - The Newark Star Ledger rating our team as the sixth best team in the entire State of New Jersey! We became Tri-County Co-Champions with a sixteen and two record, and ranked first in South Jersey polls for most of the season. Many outstanding players were part ofthe Dragon Squad. Greg Burlingame, one of the finest pitchers in the state, and top pro prospect in the Delaware Valley fscouted by over 25 Big League Scouts in one gamej was the Ace of the Staff with a record of eight wins against four losses while taking the mound against our toughest opponents. He recorded 122 strikeouts, gave up but five earned runs all year, and generally was in control of all situations. He also contributed with the bat with an average of .390. However, senior Chris Avsec was the leader of the offensive attack with an average of .429, a school-record forty-three stolen bases and a remarkable error-free tour of center field. The addition of Mike Brown, senior transferee from Clayton, solidified the pitching staff. His ten and 0 record speaks for itself, and his .373 batting average led many a rally. Further, his fire and desire inspired everyone with team spirit and enthusiasm. Joe Dellaquilla continued the superb performances of his prior three season. His expert handling of the pitching staff is shown by the nineteen victories racked up by the pitching staff. Bert Zahniser, dynamite in a small package, supplied unexpected power, Q ,gyg stroking two homers in one game. Underclassmen Andy McFadden and Ed Lord shared third base duties, while senior Chip Rival guarded the Keystone . Sack. Patrolling the outter gardens were Junior Mike Mellon and Bill Drew. Drew, a senior, drew attention with his strong throws from right field. Designated runner Kirk McLaughlin was our speed on the basepaths. Samson T rack Rich in Talent As it has been with many of the athletic teams this year, the Kingsway Dragon Track Team has become a respected and feared team in Tri-County. Coach Rich O'Neill has patiently worked with his track members and is now realizing the rewards of his work. The Dragons were able to turn around last year's losing record into one of which they are able to be proud f 8 wins and 4 loses. It was not an easy accomplishment, yet the team worked as a unit, and with sure point getters like Mark Lail, John Diggs, Otto Wilson, Joe Johnson and Dave Bittle as an inspiration, the others were relieved of the pressures and were given incentive to add the needed points for victory. Mark Lail was one of this season's stars. A senior, this was Mark Lail's first track season, and what he achieved was spectacular v sixth in the shot put in the State Championships, second in the discus and fifth in the shot in the South Jersey Group I Meet, and second in both discus and shot in the Tri-County competition. One can only wonderjust how good Mark Lail could have been with more experience. But Lail was not the only star, there were others in the Tri-County meet: John Diggs, a sophomore, was fourth in the high hurdlers and Otto Wilson, a sophomore, was fifth in the 400 meter run and fourth in the 200 meter run. Sophomore Dave Bittle finished fifth in the Tri- County and Gloucester County pole valuting competi- tion. The mile relay team of Joe Johnson, Charles Boone, Derwine Fauntleroy, and Otto Wilson finished fifth. Despite the loss of Mark Lail, Dave Eason Calso a strong weight manj, Joe Johnson and Al Caltabiano to graduation, the team looks to be even stronger in upcoming seasons. The fine sophomores and juniors of this year's squad will be the backbone for next year's team, and Coach O'Neill feels they're ready! K laszky 's Girls A re Classy Taking into consideration that 1982 was only the second year for a formal Girl's Track program at Kingsway, it was indeed the most successful, establishing a fine six and two record. Coach Klaszky attributed the team's success to a result of plenty of hard work, desire, and an unrelenting determination to win. Although the upperclassmen were the heart and soul of this team, the underclassmen added the depth we lacked last year, as well as the flexability to juggle our line-up, which in itself won several meets for us. The team was composed of 23 girls, and only 3 were seniors. But, Oh, What Seniors! Wien DeStefano, Ernestine Diggs and Diane Dupper not only were outstanding performers but were also the mature leaders that every good team needs. Wien set new school marks in both the shot put and discus, and these C38'l0 , l 14' 5 J placed her on the Best Performance List of Girl's South Jersey Track and Field history. She placed first in the shot, discus and javelin in the Tri-County Meet, she won both the shot and discus and placed second in the javelin in the Gloucester County Championships, she was the South Jersey Group I champion in both the shot and discus, and capped this stellar year by placing second in the shot and third in the discus in the State Championship meet at Rutgers. As a result ofthis outstanding effort, she was named to the All South Jersey Girl's Track and Field All-Star Team. Ernestine Diggs was plagued by an injury in 1982 but was still able to establish five school records. She was named to the 1982 Girl's Gloucester County Track and Field All-Star Team Honorable Mention list. Diane Dupper gave the Lady Dragons the steady long and high jumper they so desperately needed. She co-holds the school record with Sue Wills for the high jump. Thejuniors were the main-stay ofthe team and are the people that are being counted on for next year's team. The f'Magnificient Seven include distance runners Joanne Mihlebach, Audrey Bortner, Val Muntz, hurdlers Anita Stackhouse and Beth Sandberg, sprinters Phyllis Husted and Jenny Kemp. These ladies are holders of numerous school records. The sophomores, Debbie Caltabiano, Danita Harris, Tracy Blint and Sherrie Toulson will develop into outstanding athletes. Nine freshmen, Robin Carney, Stephanie Dysart, Amy Dubois, Tracy Jenkins, Veronica Kuchler, Sue Wills, Monica Davis, Sue Bredbenner and Debbie Lindsay will be heard from in the future. Elia Softball Bounces Back The 1982 softball team showed more growth and improvement over the course of the season than coaches Marianne Kisela and Anna Ward had even hope for. The team's 4 and 15 record is not indicative of their skill and ability. The team fielded a young group, with one senior, Fawn Lynch, threejuniors, Kathy Hampton, Rita Falcone and Barb Gillan, nine sophomores, Tammy Sweeten, Linda Ferko, Ida Marino, Sharon Atkinson, Beth Woodend, Beth Michael, Danette Elia, Debbie Urban, and Carole Gattuso, and two freshman Tina Rogers and Donna Sullivan. The girls can be proud ofthe fact that they were never shut out and that six oftheir losses were by one run. A positive factor was the strength with which the team finished the season. After losing most oftheir games, the team finally jelled, played excellent ball, and won 3 of their final 4 games. Coack Kisela ,ffff W was 3 X Standing: J. Coombs. K. Sparks. L. Davis. K. Spanos. A. Ward Tennis ets Tourney Bid The Kingsway tennis program was expected to peak this season inasmuch as five of the seven varsity players were seniors. The team did do well, reaching the South Jersey Group I semi-finals, but one can't help thinking - only if. There were many key incidents in the playoff match against Woodbury that could have placed the Dragons into the finals of the South Jersey Group I tournament, but these were not to happen. Although the Dragons fell short in the state gournament, they have nothing to be unhappy about. The overall team record was 9-8 and could have easily been much more impressive. Some matches were very close, and others should have never been lost - but all-in-all the Dragons did theirjob, and Coach Tom Schoener has reason to be proud. Bryan Kendig was the most dependable of all varsity players, having a record of 14-2. He is only ajunior and will definitely be the focal point of next year's team. Along with Bryan, the first doubles team ofseniors Fred Sperber and Tim Billbrough could also be counted on to come up with a match point in most situations C6-3 wf a loss by forfeitj. The second doubles, consisting of senior Al Gottsch and junior Brad Talley, came up with its share of wins Cl l-41, many times their effort being the deciding factor in a match. The other two varsity starters were Calvin Woolson at first singles, and Joe Jones at second singles. Calvin C5-125, a senior, was very impressive in the number one spot, playing some ofthe best competitors and always putting up a fight. Joe, also a senior, had his share ofwins playing in another tough spot on the team. Lest we forget, the performances by incredible Harry Henry Jiles Jenkins, Ill, another senior and the teams multi-purpose fill-in where needed were important to the team's success. Overall, it was a good year for the Dragons. lt has been a long time since boy's tennis has seen tournament play, and it was a good feeling. Although many members are leaving, Coach Schoener is optimistic about next years team, for some formidable players are ready to take their turn. Good luck! Coach Schoener ,g ,Xe Sf.
