Each of us has, at one time or another, been awed by a portrait painted by the hands of nature. It could have been a beautiful summer sunrise over the sparkling Atlantic Ocean or the serenity of falling snow at Christmas- time. Perhaps a cross-country trip has revealed to you the great beauty of our nation - golden wheat fields of the Mid-West, the mighty Mississippi, the snow-capped mountain majesty of the Rockies, or the green forests of Oregon. On the following pages we too have attempted to paint a portrait, a portrait of our life at Kingsway. We know our presentation cannot rival the splendors of nature, but it does present the last view of our final year at Kingsway. Enjoy. vnvsb in D 1 4ll a ,ji Q fs . Her kindly manner and businesslike handling of our many activities soon began to garner our class the successes we have attained. Notable achievements included a Senior Powder Puff victory, award-winning Homecoming floats, an enjoyable Prom, a fine Florida trip, and several financially profitable class fund raisers. In a small measure of thanks for the many hours spent in our behalf, and as a small token of our esteem, we co-dedicate the 1981 LANCER to Mrs. Katherine Timon. DEDIC TI Margaret Suiter With the resignation of Mrs. Goldstein at the end of our junior year, the class was once again left without a co-advisor to share the workload with Mrs. Timon. 'Fortunately for us, Margaret Suiter stepped forward to aid Mrs. Timon in solving our many senior year problems. She ably assisted in the concession stands, in constructing Bambi, co-chaperoned the trip to Florida, and in completing many other administrative tasks assigned to her by Mrs. Timon. In recognition of her many hours of devoted service, her astute advice and wise Counseling, and many contributions to the Class of 1981, we hereby co-dedicate the LANCER to Miss Margaret Suiter. i OCD C2 l Nt ll 7 . .ft 1 f.', ll 'XE 'O l PC' FO 41 X .Bot ,ff if -d 1 f l 4' 3 ' H mnam-aww' naamadwuup 4101009113 Leo I. Smith A familiar face was missing from the faculty when the doors reopened this September. Mr. Leo Smith, a long-time member of the staff of Kingsway, in a surprise move announced his retirement last Iune. We, his students, were saddened that he would no longer bless us with his wisdom, but enheartened that he would pursue happiness in his leisure hours. The staff of the LANCER, on behalf of the student body, wishes to express the appreciation of us all to Leo Smith for the many contributions, thoughtful acts, and years of dedicated services to Kingsway. PDIQIQCI lack B. Stowman After thirty-one years of dedicated service to the Swedesboro- Kingsway school district, lack Stowman is leaving the agricultural program for maritime pleasures. Mr. Stowman has worn many hats as an instructor. He taught agricultural courses, mechanic courses, horticultural courses, and most recently, science. He even found time to chauffeur a school bus. He was always ready with a wrench to help a stranded schoolyard motorist. His many friends on the faculty and among the students will sincerely miss Iack's helping hand. We all wish him well and a happy future on the Cape May shore. F 31 ,Mill '1i- . -, il Qs it l ix s x fx! X fi N X :N 1 V lfhQ1!5lBKSTxg3ZdQ6kmfd4.iE, 'lx Z ,Lf 1' A, '1 i ' A Hfff, fx It Xl!! How strange that, in spite of our questions, He maketh no answer, nor tells Why so soon were earth's honoring laurels Displaced by God's own immortelles. How strange he should sleep so profoundly, So young, so unworn by the strife! While beside him, brimful of Hope's nectar, Untouched stands the goblet of life. Men slumber like that when the evening Of a long, weary day droppeth down: But he wrought so well that the morning Brought for him the rest and the crown. 'Tis idle to talk of the future, And the rare might have been, 'mid our tears: God knew all about it, yet took him Away from the oncoming years. God knew all about it - how noble, How gentle he was, and how brave, How brilliant his possible future - Yet put him to sleep in the grave. God knows all about those who loved him, How bitter the trial must beg And right through it all God is loving, And knows so much better than we. So, right in the darkness, be trustfulg One day you shall sing, It is well.' God took from his young brow earth's laurels And crowned him with death's immortelles. The record of six wins and ten losses was over-shadowed by the fact that the team finished in fourth place in the Tri-County Championship run-off. Not to be overlooked in the team's success was the outstanding accomplishment of Captain Mark Mihlebach. While winning fifteen of sixteen dual meets, Mark established course records at Saint Iames, Gloucester, Paulsboro, Schalick, Pennsgrove, Pennsauken Tech and Kingsway's 5000 meter course. His only setback of the year came when he made a wrong turn on the poorly marked Pitman course. It goes without saying that Mark was the deserving winner of the South Iersey Group I Championships, Gloucester County Championship and the Tri-County Championship. Mark was truly a superlative performer. Other important members of the team were: Glenn Homan, twice winner of the Harrier Award, Chris Mucci, Rich Weisel, and distaff members of the team, Tracy Toulson and Ioanne Mihlebach. Also contributing to the team's efforts were Iim Emerich, Chip Baker and Warren Morgan. Coach Bergin faces a difficult task next year due to the loss of the heart of his team, but he is relying on Bill Horner and Bob O'Leary to lead the other returnees to a competitive season. This doubles the number of wins from the 1979 court season. The highlight of the campaign was the girls becoming eligible for, and playing in, the State Championship Tournament. As most of the girls on the team are underclassmen, we look for a continuation of their success story. Leading contributors of the scenario were Sue Pyle, Wien Destafeno and Beth Dare, numbers one, two and three singles respectively, Denise Mellon and Lorraine Alberto, paired in first doubles, and Beth Price and Theresa Diaz teamed up for second doubles. Others showing promise were Cindi Ferko, Beth Woodend, Luann Balestrucci, Darlene Sully, and Arlene Brogan. Coach Tom Schoener is quoted as saying, I am really looking forward to next season. We the sports editors of the Lancer agree that the season should be a successful one, as five varsity letter winners will return to lead the team to its quest for victory. 111 1980 Fall Tennis Team Opponent St. Iames Delsea Schalick Salem Pennsville Pitman Pennsgrove Clearview Woodstown Schalick Delsea Salem Pennsville Pitman St. Iames Pennsgrove Woodstown Woodbury Sk' 'k Playoff game K O 5 0 3 2 5 0 3 2 0 5 1 4 0 5 1 4 0 5 5 0 4 1 4 1 2 3 0 5 4 1 0 5 0 3 2 3 , , -- ' , ' ,gl w. aft -.R .K 1 W., I 1 X x x ii Q fn ,Q Q L1 K ' K get ' X-NA, A 5 A -P ROUTE LL ,.....,.,.,.. WAYNEI SPIRES WINNING WAYS Under the leadership of sophomore Coach Tony Barchuk, the 1980 football season ended successfully with a commendable record of five victories and four losses. The victorious season was accomplished in the final game against Pennsgrove, when Barchuk's Dragons devastated the Devils. A fired-up Dragon eleven scored seven touchdowns with six kicked extra points for a 48-12 rout of a strong Pennsgrove squad. An even better season might have been attained had not Scott Toulson been lost for the season when injured in the very first play of the first game. The season began on a catastrophic note when stellar lineman Wayne Winter suffered fatally from heat exhaustion. Our school, shocked and saddened to silence, found it difficult to believe that Wayne would no longer walk among us. In respect to Wayne, the boys of the gridiron dedicated themselves and their efforts to his memory. The efforts of seniors Sam Sorbello, lim Gattuso, Frank Rizzi, Dom Dellaquilla, Rich Spissell, Kevin Menden, Ieff Mucha, Skip Neid, Ron Zeck, and Stig Olof Lundin were instrumental in bringing home a measure of success. A special recognition must be given to Sam Sorbello FIVE Super Leaders 1980431 Football and Greg Burlingame who were both elected to the First Team Tri-County and First Team South Iersey Group I K 0 and Second Team Tri-County. KELLEY WINS ACCGLADES With the loss of many grads, coaches Anne Ward and Iosie Scupp began the task of rebuilding the Dragonette hockey program. A predominantly young team learned quickly and skillfully the fundamentals of hockey. These youngsters, together with a nucleus of older players, struggled to overcome the many obstacles they faced. Lack of squad depth, team cohesiveness and inexperience all presented a challenge to the girls of the hockey team. The coaches and players worked all season to correct those problems. The season in no way reflects the hard work and the determination of each player. Although not pleased with the two and fourteen record, the coaches were encouraged by the improvement made by all team members. Particularly pleasing was an outstanding season turned in by Kathleen Kelley, who averaged fifteen saves per game. For her outstanding play she was named to the Tri-County and South Iersey Group I All-Stars Teams. The four graduating seniors, co-captains Kathy Kelley and Susan Haddock, Theresa Leone, and Lois Malignaggi, are positive that the returning underclassmen, having gained a year's experience, will field a team of polished veterans that will bring a season of success to the 1981 Hockey Team. . HOOPSTERS NET PLAYOFF BERTH This boys' basketball team met the expectations they established in preseason drills, and might have even surpassed those expectations, Their super play throughout the season lead to nine victories that qualified them for the State Basketball Tournament. The Dragons made it to the playoffs only to lose in the opening round to Glassboro, a team which went on to win the New Iersey Group I Championship. - The team finished with a 9-14 record, which is a vast improvement over the record of a year ago. Coach William Smith made the Dragons into a iontending team which gained the respect of all those who crossed its pat . The Dragons jumped out to a 3-0 lead, only to fall to the .500 mark when they began to face the tough part of their schedule. Their fine overall record was sufficient to enter the team in the post-season playoffs. It was the playoff which proved the character of this team. Obviously the team was up against a tough opponent, the eventual State Champion. Down by twenty points at the half, the Dragons staged a miraculous comeback, only to lose by a few points. Six players who contributed to the success story of this team were: Bobby Brundage, Kevin Fauntleroy, Derek Young, Ioe Iones, Mark Lail and Robbie Norman. Of these, only Brundage and Young will be lost through graduation. The four returning vets of the campaign should wage a war to victory next year. Led by seniors Debbie Davis, Stacy Smith, Tonia McBride and Tracy Toulson, the girls' basketball team rolled up a school record twelve wins during the 1980-81 season and qualified for the NISIAA tournament for the second straight year. Iuniors Wien DeStafeno and Ernestine Diggs shared the fifth starting spot and junior Diane Dupper had several successful efforts off the bench at the point guard position. These three underclassmen plus sophomores Winnie Diggs and Margo Engle will provide a solid nucleus to help the Dragons continue their winning ways next year. The story this year, though, was the outstanding play of the senior starters. Captain Debbie Davis, who starred as the versatile leader, was always near double figures in scoring, among the leading rebounders, an outstanding defender and the ballhandler against the opposition's pressing defenses. Debbie received All Tri-County Honorable Mention along with Dr. lo McBride, the teamis leading scorer and rebounder. Stacy Smith hit a career-high 20 points in a game against Schalick and her dramatic improvement defensively along with her long-range bombing earned her Tri-County Honorable Mention. Tracy Toulson provided solid ball-handling and often - spectular diving defense throughout the season. All will be greatly missed next year. Opening the season with six straight wins brought respect and recognition in the form of a number Five rating in the Gloucester County Times poll and a number Twelve rating in all of South Iersey in the Courier Post. Perhaps the highlight of the season occurred though, when the Dragons thrashed arch-rival Pitman, 55-29, for their most satisfying victory in many years. CGACH 0' EILL RESTLES WITH PRUBLE S Coach Rich O'Neill knew that the 1980-81 season would truly be a year of rebuilding the wrestling fortunes. Evidence of this was the fact that the freshmen class provided seven men for the twelve varsity positions. Anthony Marino - 101, Dave Bittle - 108, Tom Clevenger and Sam Saporito shared the 115 class, Ed Baltadonis - 122, Lou Tirado - 141, Steve Banff - 158, and Gene Edmund at 170 were the freshmen performers who accepted the responsibility of providing Kingsway a complete line-up. Serving as a veteran nucleus around which these freshmen performed were seniors: Chris Mucci - 129 and jim Gattuso - 188, juniors Robert O'Leary - 135, Chris Avsec - 148, and Tom Edmund at heavyweight. Captains Chris Mucci, jim Gattuso and Rob O'Leary enjoyed much success during the season. Chris and jim finished second in the districts while Rob O'Leary, after having defeated all wrestlers in his weight class, was unable to participate in the districts due to an injury. Tom Edmund was also a second place silver medal winner in the districts. In the Glassboro Christmas Tournament, Rob, lim and Tom took home gold medals, while Chris won a silver. Chris, Tom and jim represented our school in the Region 8 Tournament. Assistant Coach Tony Barchuk's IV grapplers finished with a 12 and 4 record. These young wrestlers will join seven varsity freshmen to form what we hope will be a team capable of winning next year's Tri-County crown. 130 A meditating Coach O'Neill NNN! In a learning situation, the primary objective of the club was to be competitive with each of the opponents. Throughout the season, it seemed that the Dragonettes would meet this goal. However, in each game one horrendous inning seemed to spoil an otherwise fine outing. The team did manage to get four victories during the year. Debbie Urban proved to be an outstanding freshman pitcher, while sophomore Rose Callahan played a deft first base. Kathy Kelley swiftly patrolled the center field post. Stacy Smith supplied the power in many of their rallies. Coach Bill Smith took over the task of teaching fundamentals to the young IV apprentices. The season was a fairly successful one as the team just missed a .500 season with a 7-8 record. The positive attitude of the entire squad throughout the season will be an asset to next year's team. The future looks promising with 7 returning underclassmen letter winners to fill the nine varsity positions. In addition, despite a losing record, the team was never shut out during the season. With continued perseverance the softball team of 1982 will be a contender for the Tri-County crown. 134 Coaches Kisela and Smith hp wg 5. .K A ,IFS K CLAYTON 15 COLL1NCSwOOn 3 PENNSVILLE o GLOUCESTER S PENNSCROVE 1 SCHALICK 9 SALEM 5 wOOoSTOwN 4 CLAYTON 10 PITMAN 9 GLOUCESTER 6 DELSEA 2 WOODSTOWN 3 SCHALICK S PENNSCROVE 7 PENNSVILLE 4 SALEM 4 PITMAN s DELSEA 5 ST. 1AMES1N.1.1 Nl.S.LA.A. The girls made the orange and black see red as Pitman was trounced by an overwhelming score of 86-27. This was only the first of many rousing routs administered to Dragon opponents. These successes of the team were attained only after many grueling hours of practice sessions which began on March lst. Coach Klaszky carefully molded the team with his emphasis on conditioning, flexibility and development of positive winning attitudes. After the Pitman triumph, others to feel the wrath of the Dragons were Clearview, Clayton ltwicel, Gateway and Glassboro. All in all, it was a successful inaugural season, one of which the team was proud. Individual stand-outs for Coach Klaszky were senior Tracy Toulson, juniors Wien DeStefano and Ernestine Diggs, and sophomore Ioanne Mihlebach. Tracy excelled in the high jump, 3000 meters, 1500 meters and javelin. Wien devoted her abilities to the weight events, shot, disc and javelin. Iunior Ernie Diggs was the team's premier sprinter. Hewes. 1980-81 Dragon Marching Band The 1980-81 Dragon marching band made their debut in the Tournament of Bands circuit by appearing in competitions at West Deptford, Ridley, Pa., Millville, Bensalem, Pa., and Eastern High School. The band showed constant improvement in performance and consequently scores went up. Freezing temperatures, near total exhaustion and uncomplimentary judging tapes did little to extinguish the bands' enthusiasm and only served to increase their determination. The Dragons marched to a third place finish in the Woodbury Fall Parade, and participated in the Clayton Halloween Parade, the Millville Christmas Parade lthird placeI, and the Swedesboro Christmas Parade. All in all, it was a most successful Fall marching season. May 9 will be a date to be remembered by the Marching Dragon Band, as it was on this date that the band, for the first time, obtained a first place award in a major regional street parade. The band was awarded the first place trophy for marching bands in the Big Apple Festival Parade held in Pequannock, N.I.. The Indoor Guard placed third in their category. The year culminated with the annual march through downtown Swedesboro. Graduating seniors leave with a sense of pride in their accomplishments and a sense of loss in knowing they are leaving friends in music that they will never meet again.
