However, the landscape of life Still has to be completed. In our hearts we know This is not the end, But the beginning of The art of appreciation of the Finer things in life. We have painted a decadeg And must design the next. We are all artists Who will be on our own. No one will offer critical advice We must guide our own brush Across the canvas of life. May all of our classmates be Rembrants in the years ahead. x6mff.? 771 at by W zeawm J Hawk I 4 Dedwaf 'fm Your ever-present smile and easy going manner paints a portrait of you, our Class Advisor, Mr. Kevin Lukas. With heart-felt kindness you have given the 1980 Senior Class more attention and concern than most of us could have hoped for. Your inspirational leadership and constant devotion in class projects, plays, sports, and other activities has guided us to a successful conclusion of our high school years. For the past six years we have looked to you for solutions to our personal as well as scholastic problems. And now, in appreciation for all of your efforts, we dedicate to you our 1980 yearbook. We will miss the jokes, the laughter, and the words of wisdom that you always are so willing to give. Everyone of us says a sad good-bye to you, but have no worry-we promise to walk with a purpose --just as you asked. ... .X eclicafio U H 6 z ,We . In 1977 the class of 1980 was privileged to have Mrs. Susan Guinan appointed as Co-Advisor of our class. From the beginning, her hard work, time and devotion continued both day and nightg whether it was staying late to finishdecorating the float, working on last minute details for the Prom, or organizing the Senior Trip. Her cheerful personality and thoughtfulness were instrumental in successfully guiding us through our final years at K. R. H. S. We have been very fortunate to have such a personable and devoted individual as one of our Class Advisors. To express our thanks and appreciation, we dedicate the 1980 LANCER to you, Susan Guinan. -,-Wu, ,,. , gif '- .,.,.,Q-NA-MX ,....,--H -3.-fi M ' - figif, hAZ , , I W- l x ' , - - 'X 5:4 , 'T ifS?QzJ,, 1 TQ m -Q5 J A if ' M... He brightened up the world he knew With just his sunny smile. He offered love and tenderness To everyone he knew. Peace and understanding went To everyone in view. He spoke with understandingg He cried with heartfelt tears, His wisdom and his knowledge Went far beyond his years. He loved, but so completely. With hands and heart held wideg He felt with understanding That came from deep insideg He ached with blinding torment Deep within his soul, When someone failed to listen And understand his goal. His eyes held special sunlight To brighten up the dayg His words had special meaning To help you on your wayg His hands had special talents To build and to repairg His heart had special tenderness That, at his age, is rare. He gave the world such pleasure Such happiness and joy Then God put out the light In Howard's eyes one day. And took him up to Heaven in His very special way. God only gave us Howard For such a little while To teach us how to love, how To give and how to smile. For sixteen years we've had him, And now God took him back, Perhaps for something special, That this world of ours does lack. He taught us how to love and live And laugh and give and growg Now God may have a special chore Of which we do not know. The world has lost a boy For whom we'll mourn and grieveg But Heaven's gained a Special Angel In whom we may believe. HOWARD ZAPPALA 11123161 4112178 Underda ssmen X S. Ambruster T. Baez R. The Dragon harriers then suffered a costly loss when senior John Randall suffered a knee injury. Despite the set-back, the Dragons went on to capture six more victories, ending the dual meet season seven and nine. Junior Mark Mihlebach, who established our school course record, finished second in the Gloucester County meet of Champions. Mark also finished a strong tenth in the South Jersey Group 1 Sectionals, enabling him to compete in the South Jersey meet of Champions. Mark finished second in the Tri-County Championship, and John Randall came off the disabled list to run an excellent race, finishing sixth. This made both runners Tri-County All Stars. The improving harriers went on to capture a fifth in the South Jersey Group l Championship race. Coach Bergin was well satisfied with the results of the season and hopes for continued improvement next year. Senior John Randall will be leaving, but Bergin will have six returning lettermen. Mark, Dave, John, Glenn, Bill, and Warren will endeavor to fulfill the cross country aspirations of Coach Bergin next year. ji f. Each player strove to develop a deep sense of pride and determination. Every game was fought hard and the team grew physically, as well as emotionally. Several seniors gave up starting positions in an attempt to give experience to younger players and to establish a strong foundation for next year. Great enthusiasm was generated by every player, and each developed a competitive spirit, along with a positive attitude. Nine Kingsway players received recognition for their efforts by being selected to the Tri-County All-Star Squad. Second team recipients were: Mike Carney Coffensive endlg Mike Marino Clinebackerlg John Gattuso flinelg and Tony Falcone fdefensive backj. Honarable Mention was given to: John Ricci, Ken Souder, Rick Pyle, Kevin Maiden and junior Frank Rizzi, Tying the school record for most interceptions in a season was John Ricci. Coach Barchuk talks about the team and school spirit: Mistakes were made and games were lost, but in the process, many valuable lessons were learned and upon these we built our team for the future. The job of a new coach and a young team is hard, but given time, the combination is unbeatable. Also unbeatable is a school which stands behind its team. We must generate a feeling of togetherness throughout our school so as to overcome obstacles that may hinder the performance of our players. Our football players need to know from the students that they are appreciated for their efforts. When the combination is found for Htogethernessu, and it will be soon, then the Kingsway Dragons will be respected throughout South Jersey, and we at Kingsway will wear with pride the black and red of the Dragonsff Coach Barchuk 112 SEASON RECORD Clayton Pitman Pennsville Salem Gloucester Schalick Delsea Woodstown Pennsgrove i ij, , :,, 4 . ,, . Hockey Led by first year coach Anne Ward and assistant coach Josephine Scupp, 1979 delivered a rewarding, though sometimes trying, season. With new ideas and an abundance of enthusiasm, the new coaches instilled a new spirit into the team. The team's three and ten record doesnlt reflect the spirit, drive and competitiveness of the young women. The team fought hard in every game. Two one goal loses to Pennsville and Woodstown were indicative of the intenseness of the battles. A Kingsway penalty flick victory over Salem continued the closely fought conflicts. The season progressed to a never ending struggle for success, with an occassional injury to Dragonette players causing temporary setbacks in progress. In summing up his season, he says: I really enjoyed coaching the girls, and I felt that we accomplished a lot. We had our problems, but we also learned from our mistakes. With so many experienced players coming back next year, I think we can go far. The singles players were: sophomore, co-captain Sue Pyle, senior, co-captain Diane Woodend, and sophomore Wien Destefano at first, second and third singles, respectively. Mr. Schoener mixed his doubles teams, using Laurie Schenk, Leanne Still, Beth Dare, Beth Price and Denise Mellon to find the right combinations. The girls surprised a lot of people with an exciting double overtime loss to second place Pennsgrove and a mere 3 point spread against first place Salem. Momentum and determination carried them into the play-offs and helped them post a win over Wildwood in the opening round of the State Championship Play-offs. Though Kingsway has been trying the past few years to build a solid program, it was the crucial loss of players the previous year that left this year's team young and inexperienced. It was around these young and inexperienced players that the program was to revolve. The team was led by Robert Brundage, who averaged 19.2 points per game, and Dwayne Tunstall, averaging 12 points per game. The total record of this year's Dragon team was 3-18. Throughout the season the team was commended and respected by their fellow ' Tri-County teams in both their play and sportsmanship. Under the direction of first year coach William Smith, the team achieved their goals of team ball, discipline, and maturity. With many returning lettermen, including Brundage, and, also, for the first time in years, height that is so desperately needed, Kingsway is looking forward to the rewards of the hard work and experience they received this year. With Co-Captains Anthony Maccarone and Kevin West leading the way, the team's record of 8 and 8 proved their point. The team took third place in the Glassboro Tournament. In the tournament, Anthony received the Most Valuable Wrestler,' award, Bob O,Leary received a silver medal, while Kevin West and John Gattuso received bronze medals. Promoted J.V. performers filled these positions, but were no match for the experienced competition they faced. Outstanding veteran senior performers for the Dragonettes were, pitcher Lisa Stanley, catcher Jeanne Paranto, Monica Misero guarding first base, Terri McQuade at the keystone sack, Diane Lail at third base, and patrolling the outfield Diane Woodend and Patty Toulson. Outstanding games included a Greg Burlingame one hitter against Salem and on another occasion when he struck out 15 opponents. When playing Pennsville, rated second in all of South Jersey, the team was able to keep the score close until the final inning. Greg Burlingame was awarded second team All-Tri-County with honorable mention going to Anthony Falcone, Mike Carney, Bert Zahniser, Joe Dellaquilla, and Chris Avsec. Co-Coaches Richard O'Neill and Andrew Moritz, despite being faced with a normal rebuilding routine, had some sterling performances from their thinclads. The major problem facing the squad was a lack of depth in all events excepting the dashes. Most schools present enough performers so that they have three competitors in each event. Our school, with its 14 Cfourteenj squad members, fell far short of this objective. Hence, Coaches O,Neil1 and Moritz were hard pressed to field a complete unit in all events. The boys won-loss record of 2-9 was not indicative of the hard work of the coaching staff and the squad. Individual performances by Mark Mihlebach in the distance runs, Lance Diggs in the dashes, Dave Eason in the weights, and Rick Murphy in the pole vault were impressive. Mark, in particular, was superb. He was undefeated in dual meets in 1500 and 3000 meters. In addition, he is the Gloucester County champ in the 3000 meters and took a second in the Tri-County and South Jersey Group 1 Championships. The girls program was highlighted by the Clayton Open Meet. Tracy Toulson took second in the javelin and fourth in the 1500 meters, Ernestine Diggs placed second in the 100 meters and fourth in the long jump, Wien DeStefano was second in the shot, third in the discus and third in the javelin. Wien also got a bronze medal in the Gloucester County Championships. E16 are This year the gold team had as an objective the gaining of experience and the development of confidence more than the attainment of a winning record. Although their record implies otherwise, the improvement of our team increased tremendously over the year. In contrast with last year's shut-outs Calmost every matchl, this year's team suffered only one such disaster. Individual records likewise improved. Two of our golfers represented Kingsway on the Tri-County All-Star Club. The new management of the Beckett Golf Club made practicing much easier and worthwhile. The cooperation between the management and the team will add greatly to the improvement of individual players and the team as a whole. The future bodes well for Kingsway's golfers, as all members of the squad will return next year, while all opposing teams will lose at least half of their starting line-ups. The coaches were satisfied with this year's team and truly look forward to a good season next year. ,,.,,f Nga. But it seems that the tennis team is different than other teams in that they are able to accomplish their goals in an environment not seen in many other sports-the family type environment. The tennis team, like many of our teams this year, was left young and inexperienced. The tennis team was able to put aside this obstacle and concentrate on the iob ahead. The job was defined very clearly for first year coach Thomas Schoener5he had to take eight students fseven are needed for a matchl and form them into a team of tennis players. This job presented one large problem-only four of the players had played in varsity matches, and of those four, only two played regularly. However, not only did he shape these eight players into a team, he shaped them into a contending team that would challenge others with much greater experience. And in the end, the job that Mr. Schoener and the eight boys accomplished would be reflected by their 8-8 record. A 500 or better record was something that eluded many of the sports this year, and for Mr. Schoener's boys, its attainment was an accomplishment in itself. The team fell just one match short of qualifying for the state championship. As far as the future for tennis at Kingsway goes, we can look forward to a very promising year ahead. With four sophomores, Schoener should be able to continue in advancing the pride of Kingsway tennis along with the pride of the school. A special congratulation to the four seniors on the team, Eric Troth, Ken Souder, Tom Owen, and the lst singles player for the year, Rick Pyle. Tom Owen led the team with a record of ll-4. Good job! This yearis Sports Banquet seemed to present a theme of installation of pride into the athletes of Kingsway Regional High School. Coach Barchuk initially presented the idea that losing is a way of life at Kingsway. This theme was echoed by almost every other coach at the head table. Maybe the athletes should take a page from the book of pride as developed by the Dragon,' Marching Band. For the past several years, every performance of Mr. Eitel's Prideful Marchers has been an event of which each member of the band and the school could take great pride. They have been winners for years and the athletes should emulate their winning ways. Though the days and nights were long for the Dragon Band, the determination and effort was never ending. Throughout the year the band displayed the utmost creativity in their field and street routines. The highlights of the Dragon Band's 1979-80 season included nine football games, the Beckett Balloon Race, a field competition at West Deptford High School, the annual Homecoming Parade, the Woodbury Fall Parade, the Millville Christmas Parade, several local parades and the three day trip to the Blossom Festival Parade in Niagara Falls, Ontario, Canada.
