Timeless Memories High school A time of changing, Of growing up. Learning how to laugh And how to cry. Tasting the victories, Exchanging the smiles, Mourning the defeats. Sharing those hidden secrets With our dearest friends. It all goes so fast . . . Suddenly we wake up To realize that itls almost over. Soon we will be leaving, Stepping out into the world. Timid and shy, Yet holding fast To our hopes and dreams for tomorrow, With a determination That won't quit. Not knowing what lies ahead We will follow life's road Trusting our hearts To lead us. And along the way We are bound to meet new friends, Exchange new smiles, Share new laughter. But never will friends be so close, Nor the smiles so bright, Nor the laughter so loud, As that which we have right now. For in our hearts And in our minds These memories of our high school days Will live forever, Untouched by time. DKS If ' Y w Y 3 BERG IN i Pttff . ,,L.. L v . r-,iQwI'-V . F y... Q 3 g en. ff Y For six long years, he's stood by our class which for one person alone was no easy task. But, he accepted the part and helped from the start. There have been good times-as well as the bad He's been happy and sad . . . aggravated and mad, But he instilled us with a sense of pride that none of us has ever tried to hide. Mr. Bergin, we havenit always made your job fun, so, we'd like to show our appreciation for all you have done. This, our LANCER, we dedicate to you with the hope of success in everything you do. KBT S l' 1 A IE ,- gf' Mrs. Morton- You've been with us for the last two years but you have shared our hopes and fears, the prom, the Floats, the joys, the tears, and helped to show the way. There were times when we were down, we counted on you and you were around, and now for uncertain futures we're bound, and still you'll show the way. J. A. K. Each year Mike Homan had addressed the graduating seniors- imparting little gems of wisdoma'-sometimes in the form of a letter to one of his own graduating daughters. He then would bestow upon each graduate a diploma. This was a culmination of the many official acts of Mr. Homan that has made the very existence of Kingsway Regional High School possible. Even before the land where our school stands was cleared, Mr. Homan was serving as President of the Kingsway Regional High School Board of Education. Much of the guidance that directed Kingsway's course was due to his dedicated work. For ourselves and our predecessors we thank Charles Miken Homan for all of his efforts to better Kingsway. Thanks, Mike. si Joseph Capanna Wood you believe it, we are going to miss a teacher very much! From the moment we first sawn this gentleman, it was plane A S to see his many fine characteristics . . . honesty, cheerfulness, - kindness and helpfulness. Therefore, it was with great sadness that we learned that Joe was going to retire from his position at Kingsway. We know that no matter how long the Board of Education Shops,' around for another teacher, they will never be able to replace Joseph Capanna. 3 i CLASS ., UG' in l':. .. il' U 'Joi' ff- we J Wu its-. And prove it they did! After a week of practice the team opened up its season against the defending Tri-County Champs, the Clayton Clippers. The Dragon harriers performed to perfection by beating a strong Clayton team 24-31. The team then traveled to Clearview and again proved to be the team to beat by defeating a much improved Pioneer squad, 21-34. The Berginmen went on to win 8 more of their remaining meets, securing 10 victories. This is a school record for most wins in a season. They met defeat at the hands of tough Pitman, Gloucester and Delsea teams, Pitman and Delsea going on to finish at the top of the Tri-County Conference. Sophomore Captain Mark Mihlebach had a very outstanding season with an impressive 11-2 record, ten of these being consecutive victories. Both of these efforts are school records. Mark finished second in the South Jersey Sophomore Open race. He also finished third in the Tri-County Championship and the South Jersey Group I Championships. He was also named to the Tri-County All Star Team and the Gloucester County All Star Team. John Randall was an outstanding runner for the Red and Black, contributing much effort to the victories. Swarthmore transfer Joe Schenk gave untiringly and supplied the middle strength needed by the team. Newcomer Chris Mucci was a pleasant surprise, running all season with sure footed swiftness. Veteran LeRoy Tyson never faltered and continously improved. John Tumbelty, Bill Engblom and Rich Weisel also contributed to the team's success. John O'Donnel1 suffered through most of the season with leg injuries. The team finished a disappointing 6th place in the Tri-County Championship race and 7th in the South Jersey Group I Championship race. The team was ranked 9th in the Top Ten Poll, Seniors John O'Donnell, Joe Schenk and LeRoy Tyson will sorely be missed by the team. They wish the returning team members the very best of luck for a very successful 79 season. 0 0 x,,,M 4 W 4 Clayton Clearview Pitman Pennsville Salem Gloucester Schalick Paulsboro Delsea Glassboro CCVS-Ber Penns Grove CCVS-Penn Q I il ,V le-W ,W am sz., 'ff' is alla Row 1: C. Coach Camino welcomed to the opening day work-out 32 candidates. Leading the way with previous varsity experience were Jorgann Damask and Ann Leone. New on the scene were seniors Rose Sebastiani, Patti Cannon, Peggy Fish and Jaymie Billbrough. From the ranks Rose and Patti emerged to produce as, Camino put it, a pleasant surprise at first doubles. Outstanding efforts were shown by Susan Pyle, Carol Lokaj, Wien DiStafeno and Lorraine Alberto. Hard work from a few made the accomplishments of the group appear tremendous quoted Camino. Coach Camino constantly praised the hard practice sessions the No. 1 and No. 2 singles and No. ! doubles put out. Kingsway can look forward to a rewarding and quality representative tennis team in the future if the attitudes of all in the program continue in the positive direction demonstrated by the nucleus of this year's 0 K - Schalick 1 4 Delsea 3 2 Delsea 5 0 Salem 4 1 Salem 4 1 Pennsville 5 0 Pennsville 4 1 Pitman 3 1 f 2 1 Pitman 4 1 St. James 2 3 Penns Grove 5 0 Penns Grove 5 0 Woodstown 5 0 Woodstown 5 0 St, james 2 3 SCh2.1iCk 1 lf 2 3 112 team. Motivation, determination and spirit enabled the girls to survive through a week of double sessions. An early scrimmage against Paulsboro gave the Dragon maidens an unofficial 1-0 record. With practice behind them the twenty members of the team were faced with a challenging regular season. The Dragon team was hampered by leg injuries suffered by Shirley Dupper and Jeanne Paranto which occurrred within the first two games of the season. Casted on the sidelines, they supported their teammates from the bench for three and four weeks respectively. The Red and Black's first win was netted when the girls traveled to St. James. Goals by Debbie Pusey and Shirley Dupper led the team to a 2-1 victory. Kingsway's team put much effort and enthusiasm into each of their games, but by the middle of the season their record was a disappointing 1-6. The girls were disappointed because the six games lost were all competitive contests that could have gone either way. Confidence was restored, though, when from her halfback slot, Kathie Reed scored the goal which enabled Kingsway to not only beat Salem but to also advance in the standings. Every year the Woodstown game is anticipated with eagerness. A new dimension was added this yearg the Woodies had only one loss to Pitman. Determination to beat the Woodies reflected in the girls' attitude and the day preceding the game. The entire game was played excellently by both teams, resulting in a 0-0 tie. Then a ten minute overtime period was played, and there was still no score. However each team brough out five players and a goalie to participate in a Flick-Off . A tremendous effort was given by all involved, but Woodstown managed to edge the Dragonettes 1-0. After the Woodstown game the girls had three games left to play, all non-league. Defeat was met in their final games, but the girls experienced a year of sportsmanship, fun, and friendship. The Dragonettes were not pleased with their final 2-12 record, but they were satisfied with the efforts and improvements made by all of the team members. High spirits and positive attitudes were, the main ingredients to a satisfying season. Representing Kingsway on the Tri-County All Star Team was Sharon Holgate. Co-Captains Carole Range and Sharon Holgate along with Patty DeAngelo, Maggie DeSimone, Shirley Dupper, and Kathie Reed, would like to thank their teammates and friends for a memorable senior year. Good luck is wished to a small but mighty team to prove themselves in Tri-County next year. g OCKEY fn . L.,,.w...M.. ,,,,,. ,,.,,.,, ,,,,. .A 'WN A , N a.- i f o x N A.. But never-the-less, three returning starters, a handful of seniors, and sixty-two underclassmen opened the pre-season practice under the leadership of new head coach, Michael Pszwaro. The Clayton game opened the season and was a hard fought battle with the Dragons losing in the final three minutes 6-0. Two weeks later the Salem game rolled near with the Rams possessing the number 1 offense in the conference. A downhearted Dragon squad, with heavy losses to Pitman and Pennsville, readied for the fray. Area sportswriters had predicted a Salem bonanza 40-0 but Kingsway's pride held them to a bare 12-0 in the fourth quarter. Homecoming approached without injured players Arthur Azzari and Andy Gattuso, and a physically abused starting line-up. A determined Dragon squad opened the game with a 72 yard touchdown run by Timrny Pratt which clinched the Dragons first win, 6-0. Standout performers during the season were All-South Jersey Group I linebacker and All Conference Kicker Steve Avsec and All-County linebacker Tony Falcone. Also receiving post season honors were seniors Bill Leone, Elmer Roane, John Casella, Ron Toulson, and juniors Glen Alberto, Rick Pule and Mike Marino. John Casella received an Unsung Hero Award and Arthur Azzari received a Brooks-Irvine Award. The mood and enthusiasm generated by the players was one of intense pride, dignity and great determination. After the season drew to a close, seventy-five men remained football players, evidence of a new spirit. 1 ' 5' f ..- A-an ix ax- I mmf:-9 ,ww M , ,, if fl' , ,. Defensive- ly the team was outstanding, permitting opponents less than 50 points in all but three games. Offensively, the Dragonettes still lack experience, although this area was much improved over previous years. Highlights of the season included an opening 32-22 victory over a Clearview team that had humiliated Kingsway 53-2 the year before. Even though the girls dropped a 33-31 last-second decision to Pennsgrove, again it was considerable improvement over the previous year's 71-19 embarrassment. Finally, near the season's end, the team gave a highly rated Pitman all it could handle before dropping a 51-44 decision. The senior line-up of Carole Range, Kathie Reed, Darla SPence and Kelly Owen contributed a great deal to the teams marked imProvement and will be missed next year. A strong nucleus will return for next season, however, featuring the teams' two top scorers, Tonia McBride and Debbie Davis, and top rebounder, Janice Carter. . The Dragons met some tough breaks throughout the season, dealing with injuries to high-scorer Terrance Shorter and strong rebounder Greg Smith, but the team continued to give their all right up to the final buzzer. With the team's main scorer out of commission for a while, the pressure was on others to score to compensate for the loss of Shorter. Darnell Fauntleroy did an excellent job filling this bill, finishing the season as the Dragons' top scorer. His fine defense also stopped many a team from scoring and was the main reason for him being voted to Honorable Mention All Group One and All Tri-County. George Gaines also exhibited fine shooting and ball handling skills, a key man in the team's three victories of the season, Gloucester, Schalick and Pitman. The remainder of the varsity squad positions were filled by Robert Brundage, Ron Knight, Dwayne Tunstall and Dan Corsey. The Dragons proved that working as a team is the key to competitiveness. The 1978-79 wrestling season opened under the leadership of two new mentors, Mr. Rich O,Neill and Mr. Dennis Quinn. The pride and dedication that these two men instilled in each of the wrestlers is what brought the Kingsway Wrestling Program to a place of high respect in South Jersey Wrestling Circles. The season began with two very close defeats to Delsea and Delran. The Dragons executed a very fine reversal and pinned three opponents in a row, Clearview, Washington Township and Riverside. An early season goal of ten victories was achieved, the best season in the history of the school. A strong third period in many matches is responsible for this feat: Kingsway outscored their opposition by more than 100 points in third period action. Strong individual efforts were very important to the team's success and were rewarded with individual recognition. Kingsway was represented by Brian Yates, Steve Avsec and Mike Maccarone in both the Districts and the Regionals, bringing home two District champs and a runner-up, a Region 8 Champ, and two third places. Anthony Maccarone was named among the top forty wrestlers in the area. . 3 mm -:HQ I 4 pr ', X ff ,.,,,L :S F .5 45 1 , 3 l m,,,,f W 2.1! s gmc 'Q 1' 4 ff 132 ASE . One man in particular, senior Don Brickner, went center-stage as he played all positions and went on to become first team, All South Jersey Group I. Other outstanding seniors were Ed Dupper and Elmer Roane. Don stroked the ball at a .351 clip and Elmer was a close second at .348. Ed, king of the hill, was the winner of the Coach's Award and Don, a true all-around performer, won the Most Valuable Player Award. Elmer Roane was chosen for the Joseph F. Bona Award. Devin Falcone proved his value on the basepaths as he pilfered many sacks for retiring Mentor Pete Camino. Coach Camino deserves many thanks for leading his teams to South Jersey and Tri-County Championships over the years. He will be missed from our coaching ranks. N. Third baseman Range and second baseman Terry McQuade were each named to the second team of the Tri-County Softball All-Stars. Returning to the squad next year are Lisa Stanley, Jeanne Paranto, Monica Misero and Kathy Kelly. 'Q 140 TRACK Mark and Art Lead Way The 1979 Track Team could be described as a team of dedication, spirit and pride. With only a handful of members, the team was determined to give everything they had. The season turned out to be a disappointing one. The team won two of their meets: Clayton and Gloucester. The overall record of the team does not reflect the individual talent on the team, however. John Randall broke the school record in the 880 with a time of 2:96.5. Senior Art Azzari, a new member of the team, was a great asset to the weight events. Art finished second in the discus in the Tri-County championships and fourth in the South Jersey Group I championships. Mark Mihlebach was also a medal winner in the Tri-County and South Jersey Group I mile run championships. Because of their efforts Mark and Arthur will compete in the State Group I championships. The team is looking forward to a successful 1980 season, for they have nine returning letter winners. I x , af . Illini 4 Q- i 4 3 S F E S S. L f' f' 0 OL., 2 Dragon Pride Stepping High Any master craftsman must have a sense of pride in himself and in his work, and so it is with the 1979 edition of the Dragon Marching Band. They proved to themselves and to their classmates that the Dragon Band is indeed something of which Kingsway can be proud. From the earliest pre-season practices in August to their final performance at the first outdoors concert in June, the Dragons strove to be the personification of pride. The fine leadership of Mr. Eitel, Mr. Fredericks and Mrs. Brown, along with the able assistance of the eight band captains and Drum Major Link Shephard, are all key factors in the success of this year's Dragon Band. Twenty-one graduating seniors will leave many positions to be filled, and it is their sincere hope that these new members will continue on with this new sense of pride. The future of the Dragon Band looks very promising.
