The gift of knowledge, awards won by performance, the gift of friendship, the gift of respect to our parents, and the kindly association with our teachers. It is our turn to give a gift. Our gift is the gift of recog- nition of all the things that have been done for us by our class advisors, Marianne Kisela and Thomas Gruber. Without their persistence, patience, and dedication, we could not have reached many goals we have attained. As a token of our esteem, we hereby dedicate to them the 1978 LANCER. fir, ,,e-WM3W'fd- f if ' ,eifrfi W fl A A J' F X Q xl-. . 12 , , , I 5 ,X . V . wx, S 5 of 5 Q' 1: IL 1 5. gl. Expectations ran high as fifty-two players reported to the squad. After hard double and single sessions, the season began against the Clippers of Clayton. ln a hard fought game, the Dragons suffered defeat by the score of 8-0. One week later the Dragons met Pit- man. Although the Dragons were ahead throughout the majority of the game, fate once again struck the squad. With one minute left on the clock, the Dragons suffered an emotional defeat by the score of 17-13. A week of hard work and colorful psyching methods proved suc- cessful for the Dragons. Saturday afternoon ended with a 14-6 victory over the previously undefeated Eagles of Pen nsville. This was the first time since 1969 that Kingsway gridders had defeated Pen nsville. As a result of the game, John Casella received the Touchdown Club Line- man ofthe Week award and Head Coach Ron Lerch was cited as Coach of the Week by the Courier Post. After a 22-0 loss to a well coached Salem team and a frustrating 6-6 tie with Gloucester, the Dragons engineered an overwhelming 33-0 defeat over Schalick High School. ln contradiction to numerous news- paper speculations, which favored Schalick, the Dragons easily han- deled the Cougers. Senior Tim Avsec was honored by the Touchdown Club as the Back of the Week for his fine effort. The annual Thanksgiving Day rivalry against the Red Devils of Pennsgrove ended the season much the same way as it began. Like earlier games, this one displayed the same tenseness and competitive- ness, but again Kingsway experienced defeat. Although the Dragons refused to give up and statistically dominated the game, the final tally registered 20 to 12. The retiring seniors wish next year's team good luck. The girls jumped off towards a successful season by scoring three straight victories over Gloucester Catholic, St. James and Delsea. The agony of defeat came when they lost a hard fought game to Pennsville by a score of l-0. The girls rebounded with a decisive win over Clayton 4-0. This was a special game for senior Vicki Becker. Miss Becker scored all four goals in this game breaking her previous individual re- cord of a hat trick. Vicki also broke the record for having the most goals scored in a varsity career. Her total amounted to thirty-four goals. Another win followed against Pennsgrove and then the season ended with two ties and three losses. The Hnal loss of the season came as Can- dy's Kids were outscored in the last minutes of the State Tournament game against Ham monton. This was the fifth consecutive State Tour- nament in which Candy's Kids participated. Team members garnered many awards. Vicki Becker was named to the Tri-County and South Jersey Group I first teams. She was also selected as Second Team All Groups All South Jersey. Mitch Kadlecik, Bonnie Seeman and Patty DeAngelo were also named to the Tri-CoLm- ty and All South Jersey Group l teams. These stars along with other outstanding seniors, Co-captains Sandi Glass and Carol Sharp, wish the hockey team much success in the future. Returning letter winners for next year are juniors Patty DeAngelo, Mag DeSimone, Sharon Holgate, Carole Range, Kathie Reed and sophomores Joyce Barbagallo, Peggy Brown and Jeanne Paranto. These returning girls, plus the successful JV team which supported a 5-1-4 record, assure us a winning season next year. The team finished seventh in the Tri-County Championship meet, defeating Pennsgrove, Woodstown, and Schalick. An outstanding freshman, Mark Mihlebach, emerged as the team's number one runner. He won the Gloucester County Freshman race, and established a new school record of 16:26. Captain Joe Higgins was the only senior on the squad and this bodes well for the future of Dragon Cross Country. Outstanding performers for Coach Bergin were Terrance Shorter and LeRoy Tyson. These two young performers scored many points and have a bright future for Kingsway. John 0'Donnell and James West continually improved and will be valuable members of next year's team. Pete's major prob- lem was the instituting of a new tennis philosophy to a group of stu- dents possessing mixed talents and attitudes. The primary problem was one of developing a winning attitude in a sports program that had suffered through two previous all losing seasons. The girls rapidly adjusted and adopted new techniques and, im- provements soon could be seen. Lori Hoffman exemplified the new attitude for Camino's Racketters. Jorge Damask gave untiringly of herself and, despite an illness, proved herself to be an outstanding athlete with unlimited potential. She is already looking forward to a victorious senior year. She will be joined by eight other underclass- men-Eleanore Nickerson, Ann Leone, Cheryl Thompson, Bonnie Hemple, Dawn Lovelace, Peggy Barber, Donna Merighi, and Leanne Still. Nine eager young varsity players greeted Coach Russell on November 15. After weeks of long tiring practice, the season was inaugurated against Clearview High School. Until the season finale against Clayton, these young men displayed an aggressive improving style of play. Ted Knight roved to be a leasant surprise as he emerged high scorer in many games. Terry Shorter aiso contributed to the scoring efforts as the Dragons earned two victories while being competitive in sixteen games Our team was never out of a game until the fourth quarter, and eight contests could have tip- ped either way as the were decided in the last thirty seconds. Kingsway's point production increased, whereas the enemy's declined. Coach Bill Crane took over the helm of the Jragonette hardwood performers and began the task of building a suc- :essful girls basketball program. Many hours of hard work were devoted at Jerfecting basic fundamentals. Offensive and defensive patterns were run and improvement was soon seen. The defense showed great improvement 1s they cut down dramatically on points scored by the opposition. Ball iandling ability steadily improved. Younger players on the squad will nave an opportunity to develop still further. The ground work had been laid for the future. Seven of the eight varsity girls will return next year. Only Sandi Glass graduates. Captain Carole Range will lead the red and black to a higher standing in the league next year. Little did they know at the beginning of the season that this was to be the swan song of Coach Gruber as he announced his retirement from coaching after the last match. Expectations of a fine season ran rampant through the squad. However, a lack of wrestlers at the upper end of the weight bracket caused us to lose several matches through the year. Despite this, the men of the mats brought home five vic- tories. lndividual winning records were turned in by Anthony lVlaccarone, Steve Avsec, Mike Maccarone, ,loe Higgins and Greg Rego. Chris lVlucci split even in eighteen bouts. lVIike lVlaccarone turned in the best season performance as he was victorious seven- teen times. ,loe Higgins, at 135, is the only graduating senior that will leave the squad. In one of the finest games played in recent memory, our Dragons edged out Pennsville 6-5. Thirteen victories were scored by the family as it drove to a second place finish in both the Tri-County League and South Jersey Tournament. Three returning lettermen were joined by Leonard Ricker, a transfer from California, and Pete Diaz, an erstwhile baseball player. Leonard, at first singles, garnered the Tri-County Singles Championship. Angelo Albertoand Pete Diaz both were over the 500 mark as singles players during the year. The doubles partners of Bill Schober and Glen Alberto, and Rick Pyle and Sharon Holgate also scored over 500. This year's tennis team faired better than any other Kingsway team. Coach Pszwaro racked up his eighty-fourth career victory as a coach this year, and could become the second Kingsway coach to score his 100th victory. This was the third year in the last five that Coach Pszwaro's racqueteers have made the State Finals. The frigid temperatures made it difficult to entice large numbers of trackers to the track program and as a result Coach Sellen and Assis- tant Coach Moritz faced the problem of inadequate numbers of athletes to compete against larger schools in our conference. This lack of depth did not deter individual members ofthe team from ex- hibiting outstandings performances. An outstanding exam ple would be Sandi Glass placing second in the County and fifth in All-South Jersey Womens Open in her specialty, the two-mile. Her time of l2:20.6 established a new school mark. The males, not to be out- done, put on show John O,Donnell, who romped to a 2:07.7 half- mile to break a fifteen year-old school record. Other members ofthe squad who contributed courageous performances were: Leroy Tyson in the half-mile, mile, and two mile. Bon and Scott Tourlson both ran the 440, and John Randall ran the mile. Lamont Johnson per- formed in the 100 yard dash, the javelin, discus, and long jump. A sophomore, Carmen Mami, specialized in the weights for the team. The nucleus of the Girls Track team consisted of Peggy Brown, Tracey Toulson, Tracey Smith, and Stacey Smith. The attitude of the athletes who completed the season was out- standing. They completed the season by doing well in all of the regional meets. Many underclassmen will return next year and we hope that the team will bring us some medals and trophies next year. Displaying a persevering attitude, our girls never gave up no matter what the score. They managed but one victory during the season, going down to defeat many times due to errors of commission rather than omission. Vicki Becker, Michelle Kadlecik, Judy Lake, Diedre Lloyd and Carol Sharp were seniors who carried an aggressive attitude onto the diamond. They will be missed next year. Coach Gruber managed a victorious season with the ,IV's, smashing out a nine and seven record. These ,lV,s plus nine varsity returneels give promise of a more successful season next year. 146 X 1 ,war A... 99411 'f '-1' axis 1 ,ww Ov Q i ' Q ' af N ,., ,- an A ,Nu 31 .ng . ,,,,,- , ,, -5 -a, 552322121 A ., ,Mg ,,f,-Q' ,gy .gg .7'f 'w Q W' 'llffx 'YQQQT ' 'yfyfxg 5 -.1 , 'jf ' -,1xfa'x J -:mf-'. Five returning veterans were joined by three newcomers to try to linkfsj together a Victory skein. However, the bogey man struck and the golfers found it difficult to par many holes. Despite having a team primarily made up of underclassmen, the team was successful in using their irons and woods in putting down the Woodies of Woodstown. One senior, Bonnie Seeman, will be graduating giving Co-Coaches Nlilchanoski and Kraft a fine nucleus for next year's golf squad. To you it's one more rung in the ladder of escape to that outside world, free from all the constraints you feel have been imposed on you by your family, school and geography. MI know that at this point you can neither appreciate nor understand why some of these constraints were neces- sary, but nevertheless they have been established the pattern, for good or bad, for the rest of your life. What your mother and I do or say from this point on will probably have little or no ap- preciable effect on the mold that has been cast. Not th-at we wonlt keep try- ing. Your mother still has many lectures left, some that you haven't heard yet. uBut letls save those for another day and let me tell you what this day means to me, not just your graduation but the summation of your years of preparation and growing. Hlfrankly, kid, itis been a challenge to say the least. You, as the youngest, somehow came out as a product of the New Generation, challenging the tradi- tions and mores of society that my generation accepted as sacred. You rocked the boat and then didnlt even think it was necessary to help bail out the water. HAS a member of this new genera- tion, spawned in this age of affluency, planned obsolescense and instant grat- ilication, you wanted more and sooner that we were ready to give, but I guess I canit fault you for that. And you, like your peers, think that the whole world can race along on a plastic credit card while somebody else pays the fiddler. MI know you thought at times we were too restrictive, expecting you to come home at what we considered a decent hour, expecting you to help pick up the mess around the house and help with the dishes and expecting you to act like a lady at all times. But whatever you thought at these times, I think and hope that you know down deep that what we did, we did because we cared. So I guess what I am trying to say to you on this day, dear daughter, is that although you challenged us in many ways and didn't always meet our high expectations, you brought a lot of joy into our lives. I can tell you that both your mother and I have shared a good deal of pride and pleasurc in seeing you develop into an attractive young woman ready to challenge whatever comes you way. Finally, we want you to know above all that the concern, gui- dance and love we have given you for the past I8 years have been and will continue to be there wherever you may be.
