Wuihwugilf' 'wugg Q QRZEUWGR As editors of the 1977 LANCER, we would like to take this time to familiarize you with the class of i77. A hardworking group from the very beginning, the class has always been involved in fund-raising activities. Long hours were spent in the cafeteria preparing spaghetti suppers and chicken barbeques. Many students spent their Saturday mornings collecting tons of newspapers while others worked hard selling magazines and notecards. A multitude of other financial drives occupied their underclassman years. Finally, as Seniors, they took charge of the concession stand for all home football games. Unfortunately, despite their financial success, they were not what one could consider artistic. Their eighth grade float of The Statue of Liberty fcommonly known as The Green Thingnj was one example of their artwork. Most of their other floats were equally disastrous. However, in 1974, their sophomore float won second prize, showing that there was still some hope. Nonetheless, the class of '77 was not easily discouraged. They exhibited their exhilarating school spirit at many a Pep Rally, winning the spirit stick three consecutive times. As inexperienced worms, the class of ,77 Powder Puffers could only tie their senior opponents 6-6. As Senior Gophers however, class began to tell as the class of 577 completed the powder puff experience with a 24'-14 blasting of the class of ,78. As their last year came to a close, the class enjoyed a four-day vacation in Disney World. Their years in high school were then climaxed by commencement ceremonies in June. On behalf of the class of '77, we bid a fond farewell to Kingsway Regional High School and to all those whose guidance and encouragement helped us through some of the most memorable years of our lives. Wa,mazPf Q1 W..-.26 Daniel J. Massimino December 26, 1914 April 12, 1977 DEDJCAT 0 1 i , . ,V 1 - wg For more years than most of us can remember, the pictorial history of Swedesboro and Kingsway Highs was graphically recorded for posterity by a dapper, petite gentleman known affectionately by all as Dan. In all probability, Dan attended more sporting events, activities, stage pres- entations, and other school functions than any other person from our area. He didn't miss a graduation until this class which holds among its mem- bers, a current member of the year- book staff, his daughter, Stephanie. He served us unfailingly, coming at a moments notice to snap a picture for our yearbook. He was an integral part of our school. Many a mantle is adorned by the portrait of a gradu- ated senior. Many of us owe so much to this gra- cious gentleman from Swedesboro, Daniel J. Massimino, who was so much a part of our school. His sud- den death left us first in shock, then in sadness, and now in loving recol- lection of this great man. QM Q N - ir ATZPIRE' C IIATJ ULN If it were possible for the class of '77 to attribute its success to one man alone during its formative years, that man would be Mr. Robert Urion. Mr. Urion took charge of the class five years ago and has led its members through a multitude of experiences. He always displayed a great deal of pride and sincere interest in the accomplishments of his class. He may very well have been the world's happiest man that Saturday morning his gopher team overpowered the junior worms. He is very well-liked by all for his friendly personality, his sense of humor, and, most of all, for the fact that he is so close to his class. He treats its members as though they were his friends - not just his students. The class of '77 has been very fortunate in having such a man for our class advisor. We appreciate everything you have done for us, Mr. Urion, and we sincerely thank you. ES Q gk kfgx . s .9 i 1.15552 2-.i 1- 51 gm-W - . fig.-2 4 .. W, V. 5 21? W.. . :Q S4552 Xi iw Y x . x .. Mr. Schooner became advisor for the class of 577 when the class was in its third year at Kingsway. This amiable man, with his unassuming manner, has always been there, working for the good of the class. He took control of the junior play, making it a huge success. With his excellent photographic talent he provided the class with many valuable photographs for their scrapbook of memories and forthe LANCER. His annual offering of his property and his efforts for the construction of the class floats in were greatly appreciated. ' We, the class of '77 thank you, Mr. Schoener, for being our class advisor, and for helping us through these, our most memorable years. A i 3, DFG 5., ,- Q Leroh 's Warriors Score Four Triumphs About 50 hungry candidates answered Coach Tom Lerchis call to the grid- iron on September lst. Long, grueling, hot, double sessions followed for what seemed an endless period of time. The dust and heat soon began to aid in removing excess poundage and a fit, trim squad of Dragons was ready to do battle. Pre-season contests indicated a highly competitive team. As the campaign opened against Clayton, fire breathing Dragons inciner- ated the Clippers. Taking the scene of battle to the arena at Pitman, the blast from the Dragons continued and the Panther's were declawed 24-6. In these early contests Scott Brown and Gregg Paranto scored twice each to highlight the Dragon assaults. Pennsville scored an upset in a rain delayed game and fortunes continued to dampen Dragon fire against Salem in a heart breaking loss. Gloucester showed a fine team to continue our losing skein. In a one- sided contest the Dragons once again hit the win column over Gloucester Catholic before a large Homecoming crowd. Gregg Paranto scored the winning touchdown as the linebackers, Dan Morris and Scott Brown, played outstand- ing defensive games. Delsea and Woodstown were the last defeats for the Red and Black as Pennsgrove visited Kingsway for the Day of the Dragons on Tur- keyday. It was a super day for all the gridiron men of Kingsway as a good Devil Team was decimated 20-0. No one person stood out - it was a total team effort that secured the triumph. Graduating seniors were Captains Gregg Paranto, Dan Morris and Scott Brown. Other seniors were Mike Shea, Derrick Johnson, Gregg Ratliff, Latney Bagby, Lee Toulson, Dennis Pratt, Tom DeSimone, Sam Maugeri, Frank Magazu, Steve Stull, Dana Noel, Willie Walker and Mark Jenkins. 134 T f-- A , H 'W 6115 W Wm' 7 N594 1? Bursting upon South Jersey hockey fields in September, the girls' hockey team showed that the distaff of Kingsway had something to provef' too. And prove it, they didl After a month of grueling practice, the varsity hockey team opened their Best Yet season under the capable command of coaches Zientek and Lutz. They started on a hot streak, which, with impressive wins over Gloucester Catholic, St. James, Delsea, Pennsville, Clayton, and Pennsgrove, secured six games in the win column. They met defeat only at the hands of Gloucester and Pitman. Both games were hard fought, and our fighting ladies in plaidu gave each team a run for their money. They would remember that Kingsway girls are contenders. The game with Woodstown was a nerve-racking one. Even with 15 minutes of sudden death overtime, the game lacked a winning goal, and remained deadlocked at 2-2. However, at this point, nothing could put a damper on the Dragon Ladies spirit. For the fourth consecutive year, they quali- fied for the state tournament games, and set the best tournament record of any Kingsway hockey team when they took it to the semi-finals. In the tournament game with Woodstown, our Dragonettes showed the Woodie maids that we are rightly the superior, as we won 2-1, in overtime. They went on to beat previously undefeated Hammonton in the second round of the tourney. The following game with Moorestown Friends ended the tourney trail for the Dragonettes of Kingsway. Records went crashing in '76. As a reminder of the Best Yet season, our girls broke three standing school records, including, of course, best season, 11-4-1. Led by Vicki Becker, who broke 2 individual records, the offense broke the record for most goals in a season, 32, with 8 players scoring, also a record. An outstand- ing group of halfbacks and fullbacks assisted goalie Steph Sutton in recording most shutouts, 7. Senior Karen Gardiner and Junior Vicki Becker were honored with Tri-County All-Star First Team placement, while Junior Bon- nie Seeman was named to the Second Team, and Seniors Patty King and Stephanie Sutton received Honorable Mention. For the first time in KRHS history, a player was named to South Jersey Group I All-Star team, that player being inner Vicki Becker. Receiving Second Team honors were Karen Gardiner and Steph Sutton. Bonnie Seeman received Honorable Mention. The jayvee finished with a 63 record, and joins the varsity and Coach Zientek in wishing Mrs. Lutz best of luck with her new family. The returning team promises the graduating seniors that their success on the hockey fields will be continued. Mucci WINS 2 4 00fh Viofory Usually when a varsity sports squad reports for the first day of practice, the athletes have a few challenges in mind . . . gaining a winning season and performing in a way that would give them pride. However, this year a third challenge was in the minds of the Cross Country Team . . . that of securing the 100th victory in the long coaching career of the Dean of Tri-County Coaches, Frank Marks. Coach Marks began his career in 1951 with Swedesboro High as head coach of Basketball and Track. Along the way he also served as assistant baseball coach to Joe Bona. When the season began he had attained 97 victories in track and cross country. The men of the cross country team realized that they had a good chance to give coach Marks his 100th victory. The team began practice under Captain Chuck Mihlebach and their determination soon was shown as the Marksmen gained victory 98 in their first meet with Clayton. Veterans Fred Mucci, Tad Damask and Larry Ward were particu- larly outstanding. Larry established a new record for the home course. Fred Mucci was without a doubt the inspirational leader, and Tad Damask was the first Kingsway runner to cross the finish line in six races. Newcomers to the squad were pleasant surprises. Terry Shorter ran like a deer, effortlessly. John Mclendez ran with sure-fooled swiftness. Leroy Tyson continuously lowered his times. George Gaines never faltered. The most serious injury suffered by the team was to Joe Higgins, one of the most promising of all runners. This combination of veterans and newcomers gave Coach Marks his goal the team secured more than the needed three victories and ran to a successful season. The return of all of the newcomers will give next yearis squad the veterans it needs for another good sea- son. YEAR OF REBUILDING Preparation, hard work, and determination resulted in a feeling of satisfaction although the Kingsway basketball season ended up with a 2-20 overall record. Newly appointed head coach Dan Kraft looks back on this season as one of rebuilding. The Dragon team consisted primarily of young inexperienced players with added skill of seniorsg W. Walker, J. Shew, and J. Davis. Leading rebounder Wil- lie Walker averaged 13 points each game and was named to the second team all Tri-County. Following an unfortunate defeat in their opening contest at Clearview, the quintet fell short with a disappointing loss against the Lions of Gloucester. Saddled with several defeats throughout the rest of the season, the Dragon five did not get the ball rolling until late in the year when their incomparable ball control and superlative shooting led way to a one point edge over the Eagles of Pennsville in one of the most exciting games of the year. Their other win was when the Woodstown Wolverines were forced to forfeit the game to the Dragons. This year's squad was highlighted by the performance of T. Shorter, R. Knight, T. Knight, G. Smith, D. Fauntleroy, C. Gaines, and A. Clarke who will be returning next year to lead a fearless 77-78 squad. For the ,I.V. squad, the appearance of another new coach provided superior coaching. Thomas Keating's efforts will prove to be evident in next year's team. Coaches Kraft and Keating ,WN- GirI's Baskefball Has Tou h Season 40 Kneeling: Co-Captains K. Gardiner, P. King with Coach M. Suiter. Standing: S. Glass, B. Crispin. D. Spence, K. Reed, C. Sharp, C. Range, A. Drew. The girls basketball team, under the charges of a new coach, Marge Suiter, started out a long, hard season on the hardwoods in December, against non-conference foe, Clear- view. In what could not exactly be titled a winning season, the girls tallied only one win, but exhibited a fine effort, deter- mination, and gained experience for the future. Inexperience, and lack of height proved to be the biggest drawbacks. Only two members of the squad were returning letterwinners. The other disadvantage, lack of height, seems to have been a common problem here in recent years. The Kingsway District just doesn't seem to be a Mecca for tall females. Further, injuries to Karen Gardiner and Sandi Glass damaged hopes for a better season. Despite all-out efforts by the distaff hoopsters, the lone win came against Pennsville in January. A tremendous per- formance was exhibited by the entire squad as the Drago- nettc Five out-played the Eagle ladies considerably. Patty King was high scorer for the game with nine, while Karen Gardiner and Carole Range bucketed eight apiece. Another highlight of the season was Karen Gardiner and Carol Sharp copping Honorable Mention Tri-County hon- ors. Displaying Dexterous dribbling talents and scoring high for the team were Karen Gardiner and Carol Sharp. Show- ing speed and agile ball-handling in the fore and back courts were Patty King, Carole Range, and Kathy Reed. Other outstanding players were senior Alfreda Drew, jun- iors Sandi Glass and Bev Crispin, and soph Darla Spence. The jayvee team was under the command of coach Mar- ianne Kisela and its members look forward to breaking into the 77-78 varsity line-up. 5 2 37. 3 4 , Junior 44 Varsify 24 Knerling: Darla Spvncff, Bvvurly Crispin, Dm- Lloyd. Classboro Wresflers Take Winnin Season The Dragon wrestling squad had a fine year completing the season with an 8-7- 0 record. The winning season is attributed to the aggressive wrestling of many of the team members. This aggressive wrestling proved to be the key factor for many of the Dragon victories. The team captains were Fred Mucei and Latney Bagby both of whom are sen- iors. These two men played an important role in preparing the team, both men- tally and physically, for each match. They will be greatly missed next season. The Dragons had many strong points in their lineup, among these were the lower and middle weight classes. Key performers being John DiBartolo, Latney Bagby, Steve Avsec, Mike Maccarone, and Fred Mucci. Kingsway also had an ace in the hole at the other end of the scale with their tough 300 pound heavy-weight. John Mann. The Dragons not only had a winning season this year, but they also placed 4-th in the Christmas tournament at Clayton, 4-th in the Tri-County Conference and 3rd in the District 31 tournament at Pennsville. The Dragons are also very proud of their 141 pound wrestler, Fred Mucci. Fred compiled a 19-4--2 record this year, taking a C-old medal at the Christmas tourney, a Gold medal at the District 31 tourney, and a Silver medal at Region 8 tourney. Fred also participated in the State tournament held at Princeton. Fred will long be an inspiration 'tothe wrestlers at Kingsway. It was experience and team unity that carried the Kingsway Varsity Tennis Team on to the South Jersey Group I Finals and a successful 11-6 record. Under the superb coaching tactics of Michael Pszwaro, the faultless netters struck for their first five matches before losing to a tough Delsea squad. Defeating Salem, Woodstown, Pit- man, Pennsville and Glassboro, it wasnit until the magnificent seven met a skilled Pennsgrove team that the hopes for a Tri-County crown were lost. Determined to keep team spirit and school pride, the Red and Black downed Palmyra in semi-finals action of Group l play and advanced to the South Jersey Group I Finals against a top seated Middle Township squad. For thc second time in four years the Kingsway Varsity Tennis Team entered the Group l Finals, this time falling short with a disheartening 4'-1 loss. Angelo Alberto, team captain and head singles player, led this yearis squad with only two regular season losses and was hacked with fine singles play by Gary Swecten, 2nd singlesg and Gregg Swecten. 3rd singles. Veteran Coach Tom Yourison and newcomer Donald Olesko joined in the terrific task of welding a team, decimated by graduating seniors, into another winner. Close battles were waged, in particular, a 1-0 fray against St. James of Chester. However, luck deserted our hustling team and we could muster but three yietories. The fact that our Dragon Nine lost five one-run games and three extra inning games in a row is indicative of the fierce- ness they exhibited to their competitors. Graduating seniors are shortstop. Mark Jenkinsg first baseman. Greg Parantog and second baseman, lke Cook. These seniors contributed immensely to the team and will be greatly missed. Hopefully, this yearls dark season will be followed by Caminols forces storming to a title next year. 158 my , A ,em ' - K, ' f'-gf, ,yqk , mu 'Wg .2219 MM , W., Mui -Q' , W, - V, rl 1- .im z 1-WW My a Coaches Camino and Yourison get the stats from Peg and Wendy. , I e , A x-Im.,-xfgf A , if e Junior Varsify Krweling: S. Greens Team Rebuilds Under the determined leadership of Co-Coaches Daniel Kraft and John Milchanowski. it was a season of learning and rebuilding for the Dragon golfers of 1977. Only one senior, veteran Richard Lippincott, reported for this year's squad, and he was a steadying factor on the team. Sophomore Doug Gattuso furnished strong competition for Kingsway's opposition. He continuously scored low rounds. Other underelassmen, whose distinctive talents were a plus to the K.R.H.S. side, were: Juniors, Bonnie Seeman and Charla Homang Sophomores, Dave Robinson, Kevin Ste-tser and Ray Lubranag Freshmen, Kon Souder and Brett Middleton. A plus for the Dragons this year was the willingness of several team members to subscribe to professional tutoring at their home course at Beckett. 166 Aa Kneeling: Phoebe Martin fmanagerl, Ronnie Holmes, Alfreda Drew, Patty King. Soffball Girls Enjoy Graaf Success Determination, team spirit, and amazing overall talent led the girls softball team through what head eoaeh Marge Suiter, and assistant coach Marianne Kisela believe to be only the portent of the good things to come. The Dragonette Nine, in their seeond season, finished their regular season with a 4-6 reeord display ing fine performances against all opponents. The team then entered the State Tournament Games, first beating Bishop Eustaee, 13-11. The following game had to have been the upset of the year. ln an astounding performance in the field and at bat, the Dragon Maids exeited the fans and surprised the press when they upset the unbeaten Cou- gars of Shaliek ll-10 right here on the Kingsway turf. By virtue of this great victory, they then advanced to the semi-finals in the slate tourney, only to be stopped by the Blue Devils of Hammonton by a rather wide margin, and ending the season with a 6-7 reeord. Fabulous performances were exhibited by seniors Donna Delliquilla, Alfreda Drew, Karen Gardiner, Ronnie Holmes, Patty King, Rita Peplowski, as well as the rest of the team. Be assured the graduating seniors will be greatly missed by the eoaehes and remaining team. 168 l , X N 9 n v w 4 N . s 1 'J' 'I ,f I4 sl 695, ffX ,?'?g?f5:1i7 172 LA C 1977 LANCER STAFF GO-EDITORS - Donna Balestrueei, Pat Twiss ASSOCIATE EDITORS - Erieh Bruner, Bob Posey CO-BUSINESS MANAGERS - Donna Dellaquilla, Karen Gardiner BUSINESS STAFF - Patty King, Chris Leibfarth, James Shew, Nancy F anslau HEAD TYPIST - Linda Range ART EDITOR 4 Richard Sehanck ART STAFF - Steph Massimino, Kathy Sabin SECTION EDITORS - Donna Shiveler, Debbie Stetson, Wendy Walsh, Diane Donofrio, Wendy Winter, Debbie Zane LITERARY STAFF - Gregg Sweeten, Gary Sweeten, Linda Danner, Sue Sterner ADVISOR - F.
