Fond- ly, we pause to review the past and to preview the future. We have reached the end of a journey. Our community schools were the paths through which we ventured from childhood to teens. Kingsway Regional High School was the bridge which spanned those all important teenage years . . . now we, having emerged as young adults, anxiously look to the awaiting world. As a final momento of our form- ative years, through which our corn- munities have been an impression- able environmentgewer present the 1966 Lancer. May allywho read it gain an appreciation of community spirit. S r siYL'gL.i4 the ,..,,, is-3. , ,',,a .,,r , M f - ' ff? , -- ' me- T -.vr t 34' ' -' -ii. L QE? EN GLE AaJ 'X ,v FRANK CENTURIONE 1 sf 'f-in-f DONALD KAFKA Vice-Principal Harold A. Eaton, Jr. Congratulations upon the completion of a successful and full year of school experiences! You have made this one of the best years in the history of Kingsway Regional High School. You should be very proud. The ability to succeed in the pursuit of happiness is not innate in the human being but must be acquired through long and patient study. If you'll take everything your schools have to offer-mentally, morally, physically, and if, in return, you'll give everything you've got-the best that's in you-you'll be trained and conditioned to play the game of life to a successful and happy conclusion. The sweetest sound to the human ear is the Well done, good and faithful servant, which is said to those who have used their talents fully as they walked along Life's Highway. I wish you success and God speed in your chosen endeavor. Sincerely, Harold A. Eaton, jr. I0 .4 sm , Superintendent Robert S. Costill If I could give the members of the Class of 1966 three things which could help to guarantee success in life, they would be as follows: Q15 The desire and ability to create-to do something original-something no one else has ever done before. C21 The quality of persistence, the urge to keep going until the job is done. C31 The quality of dissatisfaction-the feeling that if you had it to do over again you could do an even better job. I have been very proud of the Class of 1966 and fully expect to hear great things of you. My best wishes go with you in whatever your choices of en- deavor. R. Ross, Cross Country The first Cross Country season in the history of Kingsway Regional High School started when twelve candidates reported to Coach Marks. With their meet against Merchantville, the season took on a gloomy outlook when the Silver Knights swept to victory despite the superla- tive running of Steve Miller. The following week, our two Steves- Miller and Owen-led us to a satisfying victory over arch-rival, Pit- man. Successive defeats at the hands of Salem and Glassboro brought more gloomy days to the Marksmen. However, great victories by lop-sided scores over Delsea and Washintgon Township, and a close victory over Group 5 power-Paulsboro-gave a happy conclusion to the first regular Cross Country season. In the Gloucester County Championship Meet, Kingsway runners managed to edge out Paulsboro, West Deptford, Pitman, Delsea, and the Washington Township harriers. gffi-fL,,.,-f1f'1 1 . - Merchantville Pitman Salem Wash. Tomarchio The girls' varsity hockey team, although filled with the great Kingsway spirit, suffered defeat in the season's first game with Pennsville, 2-1, but bounded back to defeat Salem 2-0. After losing to Pitman, the Dragonettes were able to recover and defeat Delsea. The lassies from Woodstown and Clayton added two additional defeats to the season record. Despite these losses, the hard-fighting Kingsway girls managed to end the season by tying Washington Township and defeating the lady Devils from Penns- rove. g Senior coacaptain, Bette Anne Reed, led the offensive unit while co- captain Anita Rose Sarbello, and the remaining seniors Geneva Fisher, Kathleen Fox, Cynthia Gaunt, and Joyce Robertson paced the Dragonettes' defense. Junior Brenda Money contributed eight goals and gained fame by becoming the leading scorer in the Tri-County League. Keep up the good Work, Brenda! Other juniors who show promise for next year's squad include Jo Anne Bundens, Linda Kakusi, and Eileen Headley. Sophomore Jeanne Kirschling also saw plenty of varsity action. The Junior Varsity squad had a winning season as it showed no mercy on Salem, Delsea, Woodstown and Pennsgrove. However, they suffered three defeats at the hands of Pennsville, Pitman and Washington Township. Leading the future varsity in goals scored were Joanne Gardiner with six, Jean Robertson with four, and Jo Anne Chapman with two. With these remaining juniors, sophomores, and freshmen, Coach Audrey Thomas anticipates a successful season next year. 54 CO-CAPTAINS: Anita Rose Sarbello, Bette Anne Reed Audrey Thomas if .., ,, K 1 - E 5 Wi w Q .ep an T Another goal in the making .,,,.:i 110 v-' fm-of-mf. However, two heart-breakers were lost to Clayton and Woodstown. One of the most exciting games of the season was against Pitman, a team which the girls had never beaten. Confident of winning, the Kingsway lassies won by a score of 36-32. The concluding minute of play clenched that unforgettable victory. Our mighty team was led in offense by sophomore Jeanne Kirschling, who sored 116 points to place second in the Tri-County League, and senior Bette Anne Reed, who scored 95 points to place fourth in the league. Others contributing greatly to the scoring effort were seniors Maggie Penn and Barbara Morgan, junior Brenda Money, and sophomore Linda Bland. The defense was well-played by the junior trio of Bobbie Glass, Io Ann Crispin, and Mary Matthews, all of whom helped significantly in many of the victories. The co-operation among the members of the team certainly paid off as the girls captured second place honors in Tri-County. Graduation will mean the loss of three seniors. Coach Thomas expects to fill the gap with the much-improved personnel from this year's junior varsity squad. Team Mascot, Kathy Reed, leads a cheer. BASKETBALL The 1965-66 Varsity Basketball Team gave its loyal fans ffondly re- ferred to as Reiger's Raiders j a good deal to cheer about winning 19 games, including the annual Northern Gloucester County Christmas Tournament and the Tri-County Jamboree. Third place in the Tri- County League behind Gloucester and Merchantville is the best finish to date for Kingsway basketballers. Impressive victories for the Dragons included a record-setting 89-52 win over Pennsville, three big wins over Pitman, and an upset victory over Merchantville in the Tri-County Jamboree. The Dragons defeated Glass- boro in the State Tournament Play only to lose to Ocean City in the second round. Rated as number 11 in South Jersey, the Dragons also received many individual honors. Co-Captain Jack Kirschling received honors as: First Team All Tri-County, First Team All Gloucester County, First Team All South Jersey Group I, and All State Group I honorable mention. Co- Captain Jim Fauntleroy and senior Hal Payne also received All Gloucester County honors. Ed Johns and Tom Kirschling received honorable men- tion as All South Jersey Group I players and also All Gloucester County honors. The record book was rewritten by the 65-66 cagers as the team scored 1,644 points, 400 more points than any other Kingsway team. Jack Kirsch- ling set a new single game record of 41 points in one game against Clayton and scored at a record pace of 22.3 points per game for 529 points in one season. Hal Payne pulled down a record 214 rebounds in one season trailed closely by senior Tom Kirschling with 192 rebounds and an individual game high of 18 rebounds. Not to be overlooked is the fine clutch-play of senior Gordon Shiveler against Wfoodbury and Salem, and the bench strength of Phil Wuest and Herb Knight led by senior Tom Schoener CM.V.B.W. award winner 65- 663, Ken Shiveler's hustle, and Evans Sturdivant's rebounding and vocal- izin . Juv, VV it ' Ji' Jim powers the shot The 1966 track season found Kingsway bringing home its very first championship. On that never to be forgotten day in May, Kingsway journeyed to Middle Township where, behind the outstanding efforts of Ed jones and joe Diggs, we were able to emerge the South Iersey Group I champions. At the beginning of the season our coach, Mr. Marks, stated that we would do fair in dual and tri-meets, but there would be some surprises in championship meets. And there were some surprises, for in addition to winning the South Jersey Championship, our team placed third out of a field of forty teams in the New jersey State Championships, and made a remark- able showing at both the Gloucester and Tri- County championships. Much of the success at these meets can be attributed to two boys-Ed johns and Joe Diggs. Ed johns, the second fastest boy on the East Coast , not only holds three records for our school, but has left other records around the state. These records will remain for many years to come. Ed was undefeated in dual and tri-meets in his specialties, the hundred, two- twenty and long jump. The other half of the Dynamic Duo, Joe Diggs, was also undefeated in his specialty, the pole vault. His best effort came at the state meet when he leaped 12'6 . Congratulations to these fine athletes. A track season, however, does not consist of championship meets nor does a team rely solely upon two boys to come up with a winning season as our lads did. Boys like jim Burnight, shot- putter, Steve Owen distance runner, Art Caccese hurdler-dash man, all helped us to victories over Pitman, Delesa and Clayton. Tom Robert's heaves in the discus, Moses Taylor's running, Stan Hun- ter's running, Tom Kirschling's leaps, and Joe Centurione's vaulting led us to success in meets with Washington Township and Gloucester. The future is not dark despite the loss of such outstanding seniors. Our underclassmen supplied us with many fine performers. Steve Licciardello, jim Bates, Charley DeVault, Tony Licciardello, Steve Miller, Daryl Perez, Lynn Gindhart, Ron Black, Russ Zappala, jim Arm- strong, Bill Hunter, Rich Fauntleroy, Ron Corsey, Ed Smith, Evans Sturdivant, Jack Kirschling, Dennis Martin, Richard Apgar, David Martin, Mike Grogan, Ted Brown, Henry Martin, and Mike Smith all return next year to give a rosy outlook to the track scene despite the loss of the Dynamic Duo, Ed johns and joe Diggs. 83 1 W 0 Steady Steve A X 84 SPeedY Eddie Soaring Joe Aspirunts Class Officers Advisor: Mr. Scarba, President: Janice Huggins, Vice-President: Thomas Flanagan, Secretary: Patricia Crispin, fabsent when takenj Treasurer: Louise Ann Marino. ,ad -mmf R . - i ,fa-WW D ' ,,.
