Text from Pages 1 - 68 of the 1958 volume:

Published by the Senior Tlat ; Kingsville High School Volume X I’d like to think when life is done That I had filled a needed post, That here and there had paid my fare With more than idle talk and boast; That I had taken gifts divine, The breath of life and manhood fine. And tried to use them now and then In service for my fellow men. Edgar A. Guest Dedicated— To our Mothers and Fathers--whose interests have been in the improvement of our lives--whose love and encouragement have been inspirational-- and whose never ending sacrifices have made possible these four years of high school--we respectfully dedicate The K-Lite of 1958. Sprague were his sister, Mrs. Arthur Schellenberger; his son, Dr. David Sprague; and his two daughters, Lila, Mrs. Richard McGinnis; and Ethel, Mrs. J. L. Jensen. Kingsville School will be the loser when veteran educator, Lynn Sprague, gives up his role as superintendent, principal, teacher, and advisor to spend time with his children, grandchildren, and his flower garden. On October 12, 1893, Mr. Lynn A. Sprague was born on a farm in Middleburg Town- ship, Cuyahoga County. He spent eight years attending country school, then went to Berea to high school. There were sixty-five students in his class in the freshman year but only eighteen were in his graduating class. Mr. Sprague attended Baldwin Wallace College. He went there for one year, leaving to teach for three years at North Royalton. He first taught in a one-room country school; then in the high school where he was one half the faculty! After teaching at North Royalton, Mr. Sprague went back to college for another year. During these years, he attended college four summers and took courses for three years on Saturdays. In 1917, he received his Bachelor of Arts Degree. Mr. Sprague had been teaching at Independence Village for two years when he thought he wanted to quit to get some other kind of work. At this time, he was living in Cleveland. However, when fall came, he began a four-month period of substituting in the Cleveland Schools. For the next six and one-half years, he taught science, physics, and biology at Ashtabula Harbor. The following twenty-four years Mr. Sprague spent at Hubbard. He was principal at the high school for eighteen years and superin- tendent for four years. In 1950, Mr. Sprague came to Kingsville as executive head of the Kingsville Schools. Mr. Sprague has one son, Dr. David Sprague of Lakewood, O., and two daughters, Mrs. Ethel Jensen of Dayton and Mrs. Lila McGinnis of Elyria, Ohio. His wife, Mrs. Florence Sprague, passed away in April, 1957. At the close of this school year, Mr. Sprague will retire after a life of service--45 years. It is an honor to know Mr. Sprague and to have worked with him. I am sure we, of the student body, will remember him as a great teacher and a wonderful friend. 6 ROBERT ANDREJACK Student Council Representative Discouraged this fellow never gets, A quitter he'll never be. To the Junior Class we leave our space in Room 20 and Miss Sowry. To the Sopho- more Class we leave our good manners and behavior. To the Freshman Class we leave projects that never were completed. Individually-- I, Robert Andre jack, will my love for sports to Bob Howe. It helps you get out of a lot of classes. I, Ted Blank, will my roller skates to anyone that has enough nerve to go to Jefferson Skating Rink. I'm warning you. DON'T TELL THEM THAT YOU KNOW ME OR ELSE YOU'RE A GONER. I, Loraine Carter, will my scorekeeper's book to Darla Hadlock. First, though, take Law and learn how to argue!! I, Fred Dewey, will my rosy cheeks to Sharon Sulin. Then you won't have to blush so often. I, Lois Emery, will my Halloween fun to Elaine Burnell. Only one thing! Pick pumpkins that aren't near the police station. Those policemen are pretty smart!! I, Carol Gran, will my quietness to Arland Emery. Everyone will be glad to have it given to such a deserving person. I, Linda Hadlock, will my driving ability to Norman Walbridge. I'll even lend you the truck that I learned to drive in but you’ll have to find your own field to practice in. Ours is worn out. I, Lucille Hinkle, will my giggle to David Bogar. I hope it keeps your friends as happy as it did mine. I, Ronald Huey, will my car to Ronnie Brunell. Only 192 more payments and it will be all yours. I, Betty Ingramm, will my teaching jobs to Elinor Reed. If I could handle them, you ought to be able to. I, David Kister, will my truck driving job to Jerry Wood. It takes a lot of practice to shift on a hill. I, Claude Kobernik, will my curly hair to Jim Mihalick. You'll really be a ladies' man now. I. Ladimir Kubichek, will my tractor to Mr. Loomis so he can TOW his paper box down the ha41 instead of just pulling it by hand. I, Barbara Meyer, will my quiet manners to Jane Greer. It helps you because the teachers never expect YOU to be in trouble. I, James Meyer, will my talkative manner to Mary Bobey. Only don’t get a seat directly in front of Miss Sowry because she will CATCH you every time. I, Carol Oren, will my ability to talk Mr. Collins out of doing work to Phyllis DeGroodt. I, John O’Bell, will my ability to pester girls to Jerry Paulson. It surely is fun but, boy, can they get mad. I, Charles Page, will my Chemistry Class fun to Donna Carle if she isn't afraid of explosions. I will also throw in a clothes pin to put on your nose if the smell gets too bad. I, Betty Schlick, will my love for dancing to Karen Kobernik. It's a lot of fun, but it surely is hard on the shoes. I, Shirley Schlick, will my beautiful blue eyes to Bill Cusano. They'll give you that innocent look. I, Linda Westcott, will my ability to get caught by the police to Ruth Wentz. You better practice your crying because it almost always works with a man. In witness whereof, we, the Senior Class, have set our hand and seal hereto this twenty-sixth day of May in the year of our Lord, one thousand nine hundred and fifty- eight. 16 The Senior Class of 1958 Prophecy On a beautiful summer day, July 4, 1978, we, John and Lucille, were driving to the Class of '58” reunion at the Mansione Night Club. As we were driving down from Cleveland to Kingsville, we passed through Ashtabula, which is now a suburb of Kingsville. We noticed how much it had changed. Upon passing a gambling casino, John said that, after an act legalizing gambling in Ohio was passed, he had built one of the largest gambling casinos in the world. Then we recalled how he always had liked to match pennies! Then John asked Lucille what she had been doing. He was very shocked to learn that she was the famous rock n' roll singer undei the professional name of Hortensal, The Local Vocal. She said that her latest hit record, Sour Grapes and Sweet Lemons, earned her a million dollars. As we drove on, we noticed this large rocket port owned by Ted Blank. It is one of the largest rocket ports in the world. Ted is known world-wide for the powerful rocket fuel that he has invented, made out of Prestone and a pinch of salt. As we rode on, we decided to take in a show at the Kingsville Arena. Who should be the star of the show but one of our classmates, Bob Andrejack? He is a famous bullfighter from the West Coast. We were surprised to learn that these bulls were shipped to the arena from the Short-Tailed, Long-Homed Cat Ranch. The owner is the former Betty Ingramm. She is married to Jason Organstrugle, a Texan, and they have four little Texans. As we left the arena, we decided to stop at the school. We rode the levator up to the tenth floor to see Miss Sowry. We found that she had vacated to California and that Mr. Ronnie Huey had been teaching all the commercial subjects. He seems to remind us of our school days with his short shorts and crew cut. One thing that especially reminds us of our school days is to see Miss Sowry's cane embedded in the wall from the time she tossed it at Ronnie. Pleasant memories! Since it was getting late, we headed for the Mansione Night Club. The proud owner is Carol Gran. She has just retired from her famous career as a mountain climber and is now managing this lovely mountain retreat. As we entered the club, we saw Claude and Fred over in the corner talking. We went over to see them. Claude was telling Fred of his farm. It is one of the largest farms in the nation. He specializes in raising no-steal cabbages. Fred told us that he is now a stock-rocket driver at the Here to the Moon and Back by the Way of Mars Race Track. Fred is very enthusiastic about driving these stock rockets. As we were talking, two familiar girls walked in. They were Loraine and Linda Sue. Loraine has toured Europe and now models summer sports clothes and bathing suits for L. E. G. S., Inc., almost universally pronounced as one word. 17 Linda Sue is now working for the United States Mint. She works in the department which makes special square coins for the super market slot machines. She tells us that Lois will not be able to at- tend the banquet. Lois has graduated from college and is now living in Philadelphia. She is a psychiatrist and had to work overtime with a convict, named Desperate Percy, who was about to be released from the state prison. As we were making the rounds, we met several of our classmates. Linda Westcott is now president of the stock market in New York. Along with this busy career, she has a family of ten boys. By a strange coincidence, each has the name of Ronnie. I don't have to tell you that she married Mr. Geoffrey Saucer Canterpickle, XVI., descended from the original dilly. Barbara Meyer is now an engineer for the Bromo-Seltzer train on television. She worked her way up from fireman of headaches to engineer of super-colossal brain eruptions. We always knew that Barbara would get a job with great responsibility. Ladimir Kubichek is now employed with the Bellum Broodes- wine Circus. He performs on the flying trapeze with the greatest of ease. As we remember, Ladimir was always up in the clouds at school. David Kister now owns the Kister Trucking Company. He has in- vented a new convertible sports-model dump truck. When he sees a beautiful girl walking down the road, he pushes a button. The top comes down, a large hand tips his hat, several wolf whistles blow, and a special organ grinder plays Oh, You Beautiful Doll! Betty Schlick went to India to study the flute when she graduateo There she became interested in being a snake charmer. She leads a busy life charming snakes and her four children. Shirley is now leading a successful life as a television actress. After Sergeant Bilko retired, she took his place. We knew Shirley would succeed in something like this by the way she yelled at the basketball games. After Carol Oren discovered a new kind of soap, Dusitall Cheer, she decided to take up as a life-time occupation the job of washing the windows of the Empire State Building, which has been moved to Kingsville. Carol doesn't mind the altitude because of the cute guys that have offices in this building. Charles Page now owns a Chevrolet Dealership here in Kingsville. He has come out with a new model for 1979, the Fair-E-Laine. We are very surprised to find that he was a Chevrolet man because of the way he used to love Fords! When we asked him why he changed to Chevrolets, Charlie said, Times change and so do thoughts! After we had eaten, we went to compliment the cook on the fine meal. To our surprise, we found that James Meyer was the Chief’ cook. He always was cooking up something in school. He specializes in fricasseed frog legs. We were sorry to have this reunion come to an end, but we are looking forward to the next reunion when we shall see all our famous classmates again. 18 ROW 1: Richard Wright, Jane Mead, Robert Ensell, Ruth Wentz. ACTIVITIES High School Chorus Special Chorus SOCIETY The National Honor Society was founded in Kingsville in 1942 for the purpose of honoring outstanding boys and girls in our high school. To become a member of this society, the candidate must possess the qualities of Leadership, Scholarship, Character, and Service. The candidate must take some part in leading extra-curricular activities. He must be in the upper third of his class. He must have a good moral character. He must be willing to do the little routine services for which there is usually little honor and glory. The faculty chooses the candi- dates by secret ballot. Only 15 per cent of the senior class and 5 per cent of the junior class can be chosen for this honor. The people chosen as juniors automatically become members in their senior year. The persons be- longing to the society are Loraine Carter, Ted Blank, John O'Bell, John Konnert, Loismae Emery, and Jane Mead. Miss Sowry is the advisor. John Konnert and Jane Mead are members from the junior class. The rest are seniors.
