Militants, lead by Ayatollah Khomeini shocked the world by holding their captives for endless months. A rescue attempt failed, killing nine servicemen. President Carter tried to weather the turmoil; his popularity riding up and down with each changing crisis. Reagen beat out Bush as the Republi- can nomination for President. Anderson splits from the party and runs as an independant. Carter pulls away from Kennedy in the Democratic race. Afghanistan is invaded by Russia, U S. boycotts Moscow Olympics in protest and Edward Muskie takes over as Secretary of State. Mt. St. Helens blows her top and becomes and active volcano, and the world becomes steamed at Russia and Iran, threatening embargoes and boycotts. The prime lending rate hit twenty percent and workers hit the unemployment lines as auto industry skids us into recession. Chrysler nearly closes its doors, managing to hang on by a thread. Gasoline hits $1.35 a gallon and the world takes a look at gasohol. Pittsburg is king in football and baseball, and Magic Johnson leads L.A. to a N B A. title. The Islanders won the Stanley Cup and the American hockey team won the hearts of all, beating Russia in the Winter games 4-3. Eric Heiden brought home three gold medals and the movies produced The Empire Strikes Back bringing back Star Wars mania. Put it all together and you have a very trying and testing year for the United States. Lets hope we follow Gods will and the attitude and inspiration of our hockey team to lead us all into victory and happiness in the upcoming year. 92 1979-1980 Iclassified rwTt . i. YCkJh fjTirt MT1. Underwoods, A Christmas Sermon A good name is more desirable than great riches. And high esteem, than gold and silver. Proverbs 22:1 Child! Do not throw this book about; Refrain from the unholy pleasure of cutting all the pictures out! Preserve it as your chiefest treasure. The library was her most treasured book and she knew it cover to cover. 1958 Teacher Jacquelin Opperman Librarian 1980 Friend 104 Dedication
