Text from Pages 1 - 80 of the 1965 volume:

Kingston Community School Kingston, Michigan Foreword “Youth is the only season for enjoyment” whether it be Spring, Summer, Fall or Winter. As you read through your 1965 yearbook, you will notice that the theme of the book is seasons. The purpose of this yearbook is to serve you through the years, to help you to look back upon the happiness, and the sadness, that only youth can feel, the youth that was you during YOUK “season for enjoyment”. Now, a final reminder to leave with you as we part to travel our separate paths, to leave our season for enjoyment” and travel into adulthood. May you remember it always and especially as you look back through the years to 1965. LOST, yesterday, somewhere between Sunrise and Sunset, two golden hours, each set with sixty diamond minutes. No reward is offered for they are gone forever.” Horace Mann Christina I. It has the responsibility of establishing the policy of the Kings- ton Community School. The board attempts to provide a good educational program for the area and approves the school sched- ule or calendar. Revisions in curriculum, school budgets, con- tracts, money raising activities, and adoptions of any new text- books must all be duly approved by the school board. The board of education also functions as a member of the Michigan Association of School Boards and helps support and maintain membership in the Tuscola County School Board Asso- ciation . 4 MR. Such factors as maintaining discipline without being dictatorial, stimula- ting initiative to achieve a higher plane of knowledge, problems associated with parent- student-school relationships, fitting into the community and finding enough time to plan and prepare lessons are all necessary to the teach- ing profession. Most teachers are teachers because they enjoy young people and working with them. Teachers don't mind helping students in any activity if it is appreciated and if it is a con- structive activity. At Kingston as at most schools improve- ment in the structuring of the curriculum is important so as to motivate more strongly the more capable student, and give additional re- medial assistance to those having problems. The Sophomore Class is really great, each of the members loves to partake in all the acts of celebration. First it was the Freshman initiation. Then came the homecoming in Octo- ber, we wanted our float to take over- we worked so hard and it did pay- be- cause second place came right our way. They picked some queens from each class, it was surely hard to pick that lass, Cheryl and Sue were the homecoming queens, quite an experi- ence for the teens. Our class has got a lot of good sports, football and 26 basketball and all other sports. There is Rod, Randy and Lonnie, too. Les- ter and Rogers, our sponsors, are always there. If they are not it is very rare. They worked on the float for many a nite, and kept us all from wanting to fight. Our class officers try to lead the way. In conducting our business and having the say. All in all our class is great, we hope 1967 will be the date. Opal Hunter FRONT: Becky Hunter, Susan Kelley, Cheryl Kelley. Home- The seniors put a lot of time in on their prize winning float. The name of their float was Haunted House with a rather pretty witch, owl tombstone and a lot of other ghoulish fix- tures . 40 The co-captains, crowning the Queen and presenting her with her Roses, are Dave Kolacz and Tom Kaminski. coming 41 Debate The 1964-65 debate team consisted of the Affirmative team: Nan- cy Adamczyk, Lynn Bilicki, Donna Houghton, and Mary Lou Houghton and the Negative team: Erin Lanaway, Mary Denhoff, Anca Vlasopolos, and Elaine Wolak. They were coached by Miss Marilyn Marcin. The team has split its debates winning eight and losing eight. One debator, Anca Vlasopolas ranked fifth in the Lower Thumb Debate League for the individual speaker-points. The team expects to have an even better team next year since we are losing only one member, Donna Houghton, who is graduating this year. Journalism At the beginning of the 1964-65 school year, the Courier had only two veteran reporters. Now, after weeks of work on the job, training, the Courier has a rather experienced staff. This year's class began by learning such fundamentals as writ- ing, typing, and assembling articles the way it must be done for a newspaper. After each publication the students learn a little more about the finer arts of the newspaper business and meeting those never-ending deadlines. We hope you enjoy this year's effort. 42 Librarians The staff of librari- ans have been very helpful to the student body in help- ing them to select inter- esting and informative books. We also take pride in our attractive bulletin board displays. As the holidays and seasons change so, also, do the decorations. They pro- vide a pleasant atmosphere in which students find it easy to study. We attended the Mich. Association of Schools Librarian meeting from which we received many interesting and help- ful tips on the care of li- brary books and material. Dixieland Band A brand new instrumental group arrived on the Kingston scene last year in the form of the Dixieland Band. This spirited group under the direction of Mr. Rupprecht livened things up a great deal. The band wears red and white striped vests and plays popular music. Last year the band perform- ed at Awards night. Memorial Day Parade, and the PTA chicken Bar- B-Que. LEFT TO RIGHT: Chris Schwderer, Dick Taylor. FHA The Future Homemakers of America is a club dedicated to the promotion of good homemaking prac- tices and to careers in home economics, and to building better home and community life. During this past year the girls were busy working on differ- ent projects and various degrees. The largest project the group has engaged in this year is the selling of cook books. The club went to Elkton- Pigeon- Bay Port High School for the Regional Future Homemakers meeting at the begining of the year. At Christmas the FFA and FHA had a combined Christmas Dance. Then, in the latter part of February the girls had a special meeting in which their mothers were invited. This special meeting consisted of an Avon demonstra- tion and then refreshments. The group meets once a month. 46 The chapter has quite a busy year. The first thing in the year is a chicken pro- ject. This project is an educational one and not a money making project. When the chickens are eight weeks old we have the annual Parent and Son Banquet. The crop drive is considered a big event for many of the members. We made approximately 100 dollars in crops and money from people who contributed to the drive in which we fight for the hungry world. The State Convention is an annual af- fair in which a member and an officer go to the University of Michigan for three days. Four members went down to the Na- tional Convention at Kansas City, Missouri. They were Carl King, Larry Cross, Lyle Curry, and Larry Clink. The most important business transac- tion was when the FFA bought the new Pop Corn machine. FFA FRONT ROW, Left to Right: L. Cross, F. Sakuta, D. Clinsmith, B. Hunter, C. King, R. Hunter, T.
