Here he landed ln 1652, in the shadow of the Indian-head rock for- mation which still stands ln the Ponckhockle section of Kingston, a vigilant guard over the Rondout Creek. From these natives he received a grant of about seventy-slx acres, bounded Easterly and Westerly by the woods and running Northerly and Southerly by the kill. Chambers himself described this section as an exceedingly beautiful land. To- day, although his Foxhall Manor and the rough dwellings erected by the other original settlers can no longer be found, traces of their work can often be seen in old stone walls and boundary markers, and now, where Thomas Chambers first made his home, stands the City of Kingston, truly an ex- ceedingly beautlful land. as!! ka XY Vsva ,fix . .1 .t X ...- QAI-, '.
