WAVING HIGH ABOVE THE SCHOOL:the flag reminds us of the spirit of Liberty. FORMING A FIFE AND DRUM CORPS:Mr, Merone, Wendy Cuevas, Jennifer Lunney and Mark Johnson parade their way into the auditorium. SIGNIFYING THE FIGHT FOR FREEDO- M:are the original fife and drum corps. E We the People: for two hundred years, these three words captured the essence of what makes America spe- cial. In 1787, the Constitution was drafted by the founding fathers of our fledgling nation. They created a sys- tem of checks and balances that pre- served our freedom while allowing the American people to evolve, Two centu- ries later, the Constitution is still the cornerstone of American democracy, and it is still We the people who benefit from its foresightedness. Democracy is difficult to establish, and even harder to maintain. The American people, however, discovered the formula to success: our Constitu- tion. Through the balance of power it creates, the Constitution guarantees us a government which is strong enough to defend our liberty, but pre- vents the deprivation of our basic rights, ln our federal government, this balance was achieved through a gov- ernment composed of three different branches: executive, legislative, and judiciary. In fact, our entire Constitu- tion is a balance established by com- promises between many conflicting in- terests: state versus federal authority, individual versus community rights, and many, many more. On Thursday, September 17th, 'fVVe the People of America took an oppor- tunity to celebrate the 200th anniver- sary of our Constitution. Nationwide the day was marked by activities com- memorating the historic day. In Phila- delphia, the President highlighted a year long festival dubbed We the People ZOO with a speech on the im- portance of the Constitution. All over the country, parades and fireworks heralded the occasion. At 4:00 PM., the hour when the original Constitution was signed, former Chief Justice War- ren E, Berger rang a reproductionof the Liberty Bell, and the sounds of lib- erty once again echoed across the na- tion, 'r . ly .
