' . -vi ' 1 A v The time to leave the security of high school and venture into the areal world is now approaching. The real world may seem un- supportive or dangerous at times but it is the place where we can realize our dreams and build a successful life. For some this first step into the world may be to college, for others work, or the armed forces may be next. No two people will follow the same road into the tu- tureg but, as long as the road is taken with pride and determination, the trip should be an exciting and fulfilling one. Although the end of high school is certainly a time to look towards the future, it is also a time to look back over what we have ac- complished. During the thirteen years we have spent in school, we have had our first experiences in many areas. Our first best friend, first term paper, etc., have most likely come about during our time in school. In the following years many more firsts will occur in our lives. Next year will be the first time many of us wil live away from home or work a full-time job. In order to successfully overcome these hurdles, we can rely upon the knowledge and experiences gathered on our trip through Kings Park High School. All of these experiences may not have been pleasant ones, but they all have helped us mature into the young adults we are today. l would like to wish all of my classmates the best of luck in anything they attempt. -Danielle Kleinberg, Valedictorian Ride, to a place beyond our time Reach, for the edges of your mind, and you're there! See, that the iight will find its way Back to a place where it will stay, make it stay . . . So take hold of the flame, You've got nothing to lose, but everything to gain . . Although these lines may appear at a quick glance to be just a paragraph of mysterious, well-rhymed lyrics, the underlying meaning of them goes far beyond words written on a page. They are lyrics from Queensryche's song l'Take Hold of the Flame and they can be interpreted as a message of individualism, fulfilling your potential, and seizing every opportunity to reach your dreams and aspirations. Queensyrche is not alone in conveying these important ideas, as many of the world's heavy metal bands also express these philosophies in life and their songs. lron Maiden's Wasted Years is a message telling us not to waste our lives because these are the years when we have a chance to determine the course of our lives. Twisted Sister's We're Not Gonna Take lt and I Am, l'm Me talk about living life to its fullest because you make the decisions involving your destiny and potential. Even Anthrax feels individualism and self-pride are important, as the song Imitation of Life discusses independent thinking and being a unique, complete person. All of these ideas have great value and meaning for us. lt's not necessary to base your existence on what others think or do because you should live your life as a unique individual. Never pass up a chance to experience new and different things, as regrets of lost op- portunities should not exist when you look back on your life. Don't let the world pass you by before you have developed yourself as a well-rounded person, done everything to the best of your ability, and climbed towards your greatest aspirations. But neither forget that while we are individuals, we are part of a world community and have responsibilities towards it. Whatever we do and become we should contribute and make a positive impact on the world - for it is our world. As individuals, each of us should strive to be versatile, strong-willed, and diligent, always trying our hardest and doing our best. lf we can follow these lessons, we will have a path of which we can be proud and cherish forever. What you are is what you make yourself. Who are you? Who will you be? -Charles John Goetz lll, Salutatorian I vAcademic Awards l
