THE HOME STRETCH: Before a large crowd of onlooking fans, Victor Rugg and Dan Kessler put on a show of their own. MORNING DO: Posing with a grapefruit concealed under his hair, Dan Kessler towers over his teammates, Drew Edgar, Chris Stabile, Dong Liyn, and Adam Cla- vell, along with Coach Evans. Boys' Cross Country ' ll 21 W A -,- , i lt ,sf QV For the first time in two years, the Boys' Cross Country Team scored a winning season of four wins and three losses. Good performances under the guidance of Mr. Evans contributed to the winning season, but much was made possible by Billy Fettig, an amazing newcomer to the team. Even though this was Billy's first year in Cross Country, he was able to finish first in almost every race he ran. The freshman was also named the team's Most Valuable Player. Each runner was able to improve his time over last year's. Outstanding steady performances were given by Adam Clavell, John Lee, and Chris Stabile. ln addition, each member was able to win at least one medal. These individual performances occurred at places like Van Cortland Park, New York Tech, and the ever-popular Sunken Meadow. Losing only three seniors, Dan Kessler, Chris Stabile, and Drew Edgar, the future still looks bright for a league championship. P ',, W- f km' 2

Completing its eighth win- ning season in a row, the Girls' Cross Country Team finished with a league record of 4-2 and a sixth place finish in the county meet. Running into au- tumn days of mid-November, the highlight of the season was perhaps their victory over their long-time rival, Bay Shore. Although the team had an excellent season, individual achievements were received by Sue Duval and Jessica Squicciarine, who were cho- sen for both All-League and All-Conference selections. ln addition to winning two hon- ors, the exceptional Sue Duval was named the team's Most Valuable Player. Other hon- ored runners included juniors Nadine Grimm, the recipient of the Coaoh's Award, and Ka- ren Sebbesse, selected for the Most improved Award. The team was led by cap- tains Enez Laurence, Kathy Williams, and Sue Duval. The team was a young one, made up of mostly freshmen and ju- niors, and looks forward to a good future. By losing three of its long-time members, seniors Jennifer Dempsey, Enez Laur- ence, and Kathy Williams, the team will have to rely on the remaining experienced run- ners. Each girl had been a member of the team since eighth grade. GAINING GROUND: In the heat Of the race, Sue Duval attempts to pass an op- posing runner. ln the brisk but sunny weather of the fall, many distant figures could be seen playing on the high school courts. Every day after school, the dozen girls representing the team went out to have some fun and exercise. Although the team, consisting mostly of very young girls, had a dismal record, they look towards an improving future. This season was not a successful one in the standings, as a O-12 league record dwarfed in comparison to last year's league championship season. One of the highlights of the season was the team's first singles player, Toni Garitano. As the outstanding player of the team she posted seven individ- ual wins was selected as the Most Valuable Player of the team and was seeded fifth of thirty-two slots in the Conference Tournament. Coach Shanks assesses the disappointing season as a result of an extremely young and inexperienced team. ln fact the three ninth graders and two eighth graders on the team held starting positions. Other than Toni the only other seniors were Dina Flamistella and Amy Ritter. So it seems that the potential for years to come will be promising. DOUBLE-TIME: Believing that two watches are better than one, Christine Chow pre- pares to return a volley. HAOUETEERS: Coach Shanks introduces his team: Toni Garitano, Dina Ftamistella, Amy Maurer, Julie Goldman, Vicki Tucker, Susan Seliger, and Amy Flitter. Missing are: Christine Chow, Hillary Kleinberg, Belinda Lee, Sarah Taraska, and Jennifer Toto. QUEEN OF THE COURT: intensely watch- ing her fearsome forehand shot, MVP Toni Garitano adds another victory to her total.
