SINGEFKS I I Whitney Houston and Ma- donna were two of the top stars. - THEY WILL BE MISSED I 3 3 I Fred Astaire epitomized Hollywood's elegance for twenty-live years. Dancing in a top hat and tails with Ginger Rogers and other stars in numerous films, he captured the glamor of the era. Astaire died of pneu- monia in June at the age of 88. Jeckie Gleelon, the ro- tund Great One who en- tertained audiences as a blustering bus driver in the television series The Hon- eymooners , died in June at the age of 71. His por- trayal ot Ralph Kramden will be remain etched in the hearts of America. Lorne Greene, who for 14 years played the firm but gentle Joe Cartwright, par- triarch on television's Bo- nanza , died in September at the age of 72, John Huelon, who direct- ed such film classics as The Maltese FaIcon and The Treasure of the Sierra Madre, died in his sleep in August at the age of 81. His last film, The Dead was released this February. Llhereee, the glittering showman and pianist who captivated fans lor lour de- cades with an inimitable personal and musical style, died quietly at his home in February at the age of 67. His music will echo through the halls of this country forever. Lee Mervln, the gravel- voiced Oscar winner who died in August at the age of 63, was remembered by colleagues as an actor who really was among the good guys even though he often portrayed the hard-as- naiIs rogue,
