' I be A ,. -f Why would anyone want to volun- teer tor another week of school right when summer begins? lt was soon after the last day of school that 33 students left for Shelter Island, for a week at the Boces lll Summer Institute forthe Gifted St Talented. Some didn't know what to expect, others were re- turning for a second week of hard work, gazebo visits, campfires, volley- ball tournaments, and Quinipet food twe use the term looselyl. Upon arrival, the boys were taken to their rustic cabins, while the girls were led down to their housing section at the camp. With 8 hours of either philoso- phy, dance, art, marine biology, playw- riting, computers, theatre, or Russian per day, it seemed as if it was going to be one tough week! Quinipet became a great social ex- perience as well as an academic one. Students spent their free time meeting kids from other schools, sunbathing, climbing the enormous rocks, or wait- ing on line to use the only phone at Ouinipet. Although exhausted by day's end, students were drawn to the musi- cal, friendly atmosphere of the camp- fires. A balance of long, hot hours of classes, cold showers, table cruis- ers , and the BELL brought a diversi- fied, talented, group of individuals together. On the last day, every class pre- pared a presentation that demonstrat- ed what they had learned. The end of the show meant the end of the week and a feeling of sadness was in the air. In more ways than one, it was an excit- ing week and a great start to the sum- mer of '87. WHY DlDN'T YOU WARN ME? Bringing his grievances to Cindy Brody, Jeff Lackowitz lets off some steam. For four years the class of '88 has mumbled through the thee's and thou's of Shakespeare, for four years we have swatted baseballs and dodged volleyballsg for at least three years we tried to understand the basis of foreign government and domestic economicsg we have spent a minimum of two years trying to make sense of the x's and y's of advanced algebra and another two years analyzing bf!- lions and billions of scientific facts. lt was all so we could be handed a piece of paper that said Diploma. The word is symbolic of more than just the paper. It represents twelve years of working toward a goal, it shows that one is willing and able, it tells the world that you are worthy of the title graduate.
