Text from Pages 1 - 216 of the 1968 volume:

Dedicated to Fred H. Paschal if If you can keep your head when all about you Are losing theirs and blaming it on you, If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you, But make allowance for their doubting too; If you can wait and not be tired by waiting, Or being lied about, don’t deal in lies, Or being hated, don’t give way to hating, And yet don’t look too good, nor talk too wise: If you can dream-and not make dreams your master; If you can think-and not make thoughts your aim; If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster And treat those two impostors just the same; If you can bear to hear the truth you’ve spoken Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools, Or watch the things you gave your life to, broken, And stoop and build ’em up with worn-out tools: If you can make one heap of all your winnings And risk it on one turn of pitch-and-toss, And lose, and start again at your beginnings And never breathe a word about your loss; If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew To serve your turn long after they are gone, And so hold on when there is nothing in you Except the Will which says to them: ‘Hold on!’ If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue, Or walk with Kings-nor lose the common touch, If neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you, If all men count with you, but none too much; If you can fill the unforgiving minute With sixty seconds’ worth of distance run, Yours is the Earth and everything that ' s in it, And-which is more-you ' ll be a Man, my son! Rudyard Kipling Introduction As we, the students of Kings Mountain High School, turn the pages of this the 1968 Milestones, many memories will return. There is the informal friendliness reflected in this annual that typifies our high school. Happi¬ ness, sadness, success, and failure are pre¬ sented here. As time is reviewed, many and varied happenings return. The dedication of the John H. Gamble Stadium was a realization of a hope and dream that the entire community had shared for several years. Highlights of the football season were the Homecoming queen and her court, and the defeat of our arch rival, Shelby. Basketball this year-Oh, how would anyone begin to describe it? The season began with a hope of success. As the games progressed, the wins mounted. The Southwestern and the Bi-Con- ference tournaments that we hosted were hectic. Winning those games, we went to Kannapolis where we felt the most bitter of disappointments. By then there were our four Easter holidays to start planning. Those eight snow days were nice, but now school is on a Saturday. It would have to be April 20, Junior-Senior Prom day! Baseball season began; May Day was pro¬ duced; Senior plays were practiced and pre¬ sented; and the graduation practice began. But, wait! Let’s turn the pages forward for a backward look at this year. If nothing else has been accomplished by you in your years of work and study at Kings Mountain High School, I feel that you have attained this worthy end. It has been a rare occasion when one of you has been asked to accept respon¬ sibility and has not done so. Now, as you are graduated and move into the orbit of life out¬ side the school, maintain this badge of maturity. Accept the responsibility that is thrust upon you; even go out of your way to seek further tasks. As you accept harder and harder jobs, and prove you are capable of accomplishing them, you will grow stronger and more capable of fulfilling the utmost re¬ quirements made of you. This is what will be required to keep our nation and our society strong and active, and from what I have seen of the students of our school, you will certainly be in the forefront of our progress. Conclusion Where does the end come and a new begin¬ ning start? Well, wiser men than those whom most of us will ever know have asked that question. Exams are studied for, maybe. At least, they are finished. The excitement of all the end of the year ' s activities is almost ex¬ hausted. Lockers have been cleaned, and the student parking lot is now deserted. Empty rooms, unoccupied desks, and piles of for¬ gotten knowledge-all are a reminiscence of the year now past. The plans of beach trips, the lake, a real job, college, and for a few summer school have taken their places. Summer has begun. As has been said fre¬ quently this year, it ' s all over!
