8s Mountain School Library FOREWORD This year has been one of rebuilding for Kings Mountain High School. With the move into a new building, expanded facilities have made possible greater educational experi- ences. The student commons area, particu- larly, has opened an entirely new area of student life. Many new challenges have been confronted by the students. The new building has been the setting for many interesting and unusual experiences. This edition of MILE- STONES is presented as a record of these experiences. ii 2 i Knp Mountain High School Library CONTENTS A DMINISTRA TION CLA SSES A CTIVITIES EE A TURES CLUBS SPORTS SERVICES SENIOR DIRECTOR Y 3 BUILDING FOR THE FUTURE Student Commons Area Kings Mountain High School Library 4 Language Laboratory Home Economics Department 5 English Class and Seminar Room 6 % Chemistry and Physics Laboratory Kinas Mountain High School Gymnasium 7 8 9 10 1 1 T)ecficaiion . . . SECRETARIES SERVE Miss Kay Canipe School Secretary 17 Harry E. Jaynes, Kings Mountain High School Principal Each school year has unique distinctions that are singled out as memo- rable footprints on the educational pathway of Kings Mountain High School. The indelible marks on the lives of our people have strongly influenced our cultural heritage. The school year of 1965-66 marches into history with listed distinctions written on the noble banner it proudly carries: (1.) Use of the new high school plant facilities for the first time; (2.) Integration of the student body; (3.) More responsible participation of the S.P.O members in school life; (4.) Beginning of construction of the football stadium. The eagerly anticipated opening of our school in September made the most pessimistic patron extol the facilities and forsee an immediate Utopia for everyone. However, the school year, with many disconcerting factors, dispelled the disillusions of ardent dreamers. After receiving minor jolts to their aspirations, the school population became cognizant of the stern reality of earning a lofty place for these listed distinctions. By perseverance, the members of the school made ver- satile adjustment to facility shortcomings, re-assessed the student body ' s ability to assume more responsibility, and renewed strongly he declaration of the Mountaineer spirit to face these small distrurbing influences and to overcome them. With the confrontment of these various challenges, we are confident that the school year has been fruitful. We are assured that the first steps to a unique and scintillating approach to education were well taken. 18 FACULTY Mr. Don Parker Asst. Principal; Economics, Sociology, A.B., Mary- ville College. CHOR US The stage came to life with excitement and laughter as the workers of Feudal Rock dude ranch were bom- barded with the diverse problems of their unusual guests in the Kings Mountain High School Chorus presentation of the operetta, Cherrie of Cherokee Road on Novem- ber 1 8 . Cherrie, an attractive girl who had been adopted by an Indian tribe when her home was destroyed in a torna- do, wandered to the ranch. She explained to owner Alan O ' Day that she had slipped away from the tribe when she learned that she was expected to marry Jasper White- ploom, an Indian. Mr. O ' Day kindly gave her a job. JOY AND SORROW OF The 1965 Mountaineers could best be described as inexperienced. With only four lettermen returning, Mr. Bates had many positions to fill. The players were lack- ng experience, but each was rich in spirit. The Mounties got their baptism under fire against Salem High School. Kings Mountain continued in its ways of the past years by winning 1 9 to 0. Mistakes marred the next week ' s game against Cher- ryville. Although the offense sputtered at times and Cherryville scored on a long pass, the Mountaineers managed to win by 1 3-7 score. A fleet-footed Chase football team hosted Kings Mountain the following Friday. The injury-plagued Mountaineers had trouble containing the Troj an ' s fast backs. Chase avenged its previous defeats to Kings Mountain by winning 37 to 1 2. Conference champion East Rutherford invaded City Stadium in the fourth game. With the exception of a few big ploys, Kings Mountain battled East on even terms. The several big plays, however, resulted in a 20-0 Kings Mountain defeat. Bessemer City provided the opposition for the Moun- taineers Homecoming game. Although Kings Mountain moved the ball well, the Mounties could not cross the 128 Third Row: Jeff Mauney, Glenn Perkins, Dennis Smith, Kenny Plonk, Jay Powell, Lorry Patrick, Gary DeVenney, George Hoffman Mauney, Freddie Wright, Jerry Ledford, Mike Hoyle, Jerry Mitchem, Charles Ramsey, Steve Goforth, Bobb Moss, Joe Leftwich, Danny Finger. THE 1965 MOUNTAINEERS goal line. The game was in doubt until the final gun, but the Bessemer City team won 7-0. On October 15, Kings Mountain traveled to Mcorfes- ville. The powerful Northeastern conference team could do no wrong and the Mounties, no right. Mooresville won 32 to 0. Arch rival Shelby opposed Kings Mountain the next Friday. The Mountie gridders played valiantly before losing by a score of 1 9 to 0. The seventh game started out badly for Kings Moun- tain. R. S. Central returned the opening kickoff for a touchdown. This seemed to take the spirit out of the Mounties as Kings Mountain lost 26 to 7. Kings Mountain looked like a different team the next Friday. The Mountaineers came back to defeat the Bel- mont eleve n by winning 14 to 0. The season ' s final game pitted a strong Lincointon team against the inspired Mountaineers. The Mountain- eers made Lincointon struggle for every gain. After ty- ing the score 7-7, Kings Mountain fell behind and lost 1 9 to 7. The 1965 season was a rebuilding one for Kings Moun- tain. Next year, perhaps, the more experienced Moun- taineers will once again comprise a football powerhouse. 129 Coaches Bill Bates and Don Parker watch as the Mounties push forward 130 Scott Cloninger rushes to the aid of his teammates. Our hearts are saddened by his absence. 153 EDITORS NOTE Our first year in the new, modern Kings Mountain High School has been interesting and challenging. The section in this edition of Milestones, Building for the Future, which contains shots of our school, is designed to show off the many modern features of the new building. The new Student Life section of the 1966 Milestones features many aspects of students ' lives at Kings Mountain High School. We have made one major change, and have kept another part of the annual the same as last year. The 1966 Milestones is a large size to fit in with the emergence of our school as a larger educational unit. The colors — the Black and Gold — have remained the same to show our school spirit. With this edition of Milestones, we have set precedents by moving up to a larger size and by changing the format of our annual. 154 Advertisements Winner of 1965 School Talent Show KIWAIS CLUB OF KINGS MOUNTAIN Sponsors of the Annual SchodI Talent Show i56 OUR PROFESSIOML FRIEIDS Dr. P.
